The choir, representing Luther College graduates from 1949-2013, has been rehearsing intensely for its farewell performance.
Weston Noble, professor emeritus of music at Luther, had a 57-year tenure in conducting and teaching at the school. He and assistant professor of music Andrew Last, will conduct the concert.
Music and family walk in lockstep throughout Luther’s history. Alumni choir member Marilyn Fritz Shardlow, Class of 1972, notes that her grandfather was the college’s valedictorian in 1911. Fritz, a religion major, was an active participant in music and went on to become a lifelong singer. Shardlow joins her sister Anne Woelffer, Class of 1964, in this year’s choir. Shardlow’s father also sang at Luther.
The extended family that was to become the choir formed in the summer of 2006. Myron Heaton, a 1968 graduate and director of the Myron Heaton Chorale of Las Vegas, invited Noble to serve as guest conductor for the group’s tour of Europe.
