New Year’s Eve celebration returns to Georgia Street

12/30/2015

With just one day remaining in 2015, Downtown Indy is gearing up for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve celebration, during which 25,000 revelers are expected to congregate on Georgia Street.

The festivities, running from 6 p.m.-12:30 a.m., will feature the electronic dance music of disc jockey Kap Slap, country music by Corey Cox and the duo of Dave and Whitney and Rubbaband, a Motown rhythm and blues group. There will also be food and beverages.

At 11:59 p.m., when in most cities the traditional ball drop takes place, an IndyCar hoisted high above the crowd will once again descend to a collective countdown amidst great fanfare and fireworks at midnight.

A new element this year will include the opportunity for one lucky person to race away just seconds after midnight in a street-legal IndyCar ushering in the march to the 100th running of the famed Indianapolis 500 on May 29.

“Last year’s New Year’s Eve event was a great success, and we’re excited to bring thousands of revelers back to Georgia Street again this year,” said Sherry Seiwert, president of Downtown Indy. “We know that most major cities in the U.S. have their own New Year’s celebration, so it makes perfect sense that Downtown Indy has a one-of-a-kind tradition of its own.”

Art exhibit to feature textiles

Just in time to help shake off the winter doldrums comes “Fabrication,” an exhibition that opens with a reception at 6 p.m. Jan. 13 at Herron School of Art and Design.

The show features the work of seven artists with each incorporating a textile sensibility through elements of fabric and fabrication.

“Inspired by a rich array of historical textiles, from drapery to quilt, these complex, multipart works contrast our culture’s rampant media consumption with the redemptive nuance of slow work wrought by hand,” said Reni Gower, co-currator.

“Individual works range from delicate illusions to layered constructions to architectural interventions,” she continued, “created from a variety of materials, including oil and acrylic paint, vintage clothing, aluminum screens, wool, silk, plastic, thread, vinyl, burlap, rug-hold, glass, recycled objects and found fabrics. These works interweave sensory pleasure with repetitive process to invoke introspection and reflection.”

Also opening Jan. 13 at the school, 735 W. New York St., is an exhibition of works by first-year photography and intermedia graduate students and a display of works by Indianapolis-based artist Michael Milano.

Additional information about the exhibits is available by calling 278-9400.
