Festival Celebrates Life of Cancer Victim
BlakeStrong Fest, a celebration of Blake Bowell’s courageous four-year battle against cancer, will run from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the McAllister Center for the Performing Arts at Garfield Park, 2450 Shelby St. Bowell was 25 when he died two years ago. The event will feature food trucks, a beer pavilion and music by Hyryder with special appearances by Cathy Morris, The Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers, Free But Not Cheap, The Lookouts and Barbender. A $10 donation per person will be requested for admission. 

Hole-in-one Is Worth $10,000
Lutheran High School will host its 27th annual golf outing Saturday, Aug. 10, at Southern Dunes, 8220 S. Tibbs Ave.
The cost is $100 per person, $400 per foursome and includes a buffet lunch and prizes ($10,000 for a hole-in-one).

Historical Society Meets
The Perry Township/Southport Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, at the Perry Township Educational Center, 6548 Orinoco Ave. Fred Shonk has a special program planned to honor those who played on the basketball courts at Edgewood Grade School on Epler Avenue many years ago. “The school and the hoops are gone, but their memory lives on,” Shonk said. “If you love Indiana basketball, you won’t want to miss this meeting.” 

Quilters Will Be Treated to Trunk Show
The Southside group of the Quilters Guild of Indianapolis will meet from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at Friedens United Church of Christ, 8300 S. Meridian St. The program will feature an overview of how a quilter gets started and a trunk show. The color theory is yellow-green, and those attending are asked to wear something that color. Indy Shorts Film Festival
The Indy Shorts International Film Fest will take place Thursday-Sunday, July 25-28, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, 4000 N. Michigan Road. The event features more than 100 films 40 minutes or less. A preview of the event’s programs are outlined below. Tickets can be purchased online at www.indyshorts.org.

Free Outdoor Movies 

White River State Park will present an outdoor showing of “The Goonies” at 9:20 p.m. today at the Indiana State Museum Lawn, 650 W. Washington St. Movie-goers are welcome to bring blankets and spread out on the lawn for a relaxing night under the stars. Food will be available for purchase. Info: www.whiteriverstatepark.org.  
Downtown Indy will present a free viewing of “Splash” at dusk Sunday on the Central Canal. A large movie screen will be located near the Admiral Spruance Basin (11th Street). Those attending are invited to bring blankets, chairs and picnics to enjoy the film on the lawn. Food and soft drinks will be available to purchase. “Days of Thunder” will be shown Sunday, Aug. 22, and “Grease” Sunday, Sept. 5. Info: www.downtownindy.org.

APOLLO 11 PROGRAM AT GPL

Greenwood Public Library joins the nation in celebrating the 50  th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission with a special program Saturday at 1 p.m. at the library, 310 S. Meridian St. Purdue University graduate Randall Harris, a retired aerospace technologist, will discuss the Apollo program and how the space program changed during his 34 years with NASA. UHUMC COMMUNITY LUNCH

University Heights United Methodist Church is offering a meal on Saturday, June 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The public is invited. The church is at Hanna and Otterbein avenues, across from the University of Indianapolis campus.

 NON-PERISHABLE GOODS NEEDED
Throughout this month, Southsiders can donate non-perishable food items to help replenish the Hornet Park community pantry in Beech Grove. The pantry provides food to those in need during unexpected hardships. Donation sites are: Beech Grove City Hall, 802 Main Street; Beech Grove Senior Center, 602 Main St.; Hornet Park Community Center, 5245 Hornet Park Ave.; and Walmart of Beech Grove, 4650 S. Emerson Ave.
 
BEECH GROVE FARMERS MARKET
The Beech Grove farmers market is open every Tuesday through Oct. 21 at  the South Emerson Church of God, 3939 S. Emerson Ave. Hours are from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

BEECH GROVE BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHTS
Beech Grove City Schools have scheduled back-to-school nights for students and parents. The schools, dates and times: Monday, July 29, 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Hornet Park (grades K-1); July 29, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Central Elementary (grades 2-3); Tuesday, July 30, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., South Grove Intermediate (grades 4-6); July 29, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Beech Grove High School (grades 9-12, includes freshmen and new student orientation). The first day of school for all students is Wednesday, July 31.

WEST PERRY LIBRARY DESIGN UNVEIL
Proposed design plans for the new West Perry Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library will be unveiled publicly Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m. at the Southport Branch, 2630 E. Stop 11 Road. The $9.2 million, 25,000-square foot library will be located near Harding Street and Southport Road and is scheduled to open in 2021. It will fill a need for far western Southside and Decatur Township residents. Info: call 317-275-4012.

‘FALLEN OFFICER’ BLOOD DRIVE
An Indiana Fallen Officer blood drive Saturday, July 29, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will honor the late Southport Police Lt. Aaron Allen at the Southport Municipal Complex, 137 Worman Ave.

FREE STUDENT BACKPACKS
Students who will be attending a Beech Grove City School can pick up a free backpack and school supplies Saturday, July 13, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at Hornet Park Elementary School, 5334 Hornet Ave. No registration is required. Info: www.lifebridge-community.org, or call 317-787-0071.

FREE SHREDDING IN BEECH GROVE
Free paper shredding and appliance recycling will be available Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 noon, behind Beech Grove City Hall, 806 Main Street.

Free Vision Screenings
The Southport Lions Club will provide free vision screenings to children ages 1-6 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, July 16-17, at Southport Library, 2630 E. Stop 11 Road. Appointments are not required. Info: AJ Johnson at 317-250-3556 or Pauline Ulrey at 317-374-7294. 

Arts and Crafts Sale
A group of crafters, quilters and artists will host a sale from noon-8 p.m. Friday at Maple Hill United Methodist Church, 4607 Northeastern Ave.   

Beech Grove Center Offers Programs
Hornet Park Community Center, 5245 Hornet Ave., Beech Grove, offers a variety of programs, including free lunches for children 18 and under (adults can eat for $3); a gardening club, community dinners and movie nights; arts activities; Monday, July 15; fitness activities; and rental picnic shelters. Garfield Park Activities
Garfield Park’s biergarden (in the Sunken Garden), 2450 Shelby St., will be open from 5:30-9 p.m. Thursday, July 18. Visitors can enjoy live music, locally crafted beer and lawn games. Children are welcome, as are dogs on leashes The park’s arts center and conservatory also offer a variety of activities. Info: www.indy.gov.
