Documentary depicts Milan’s magical 1954 state title

The Milan ’54 Hoosiers Museum has released “Dreams to Legends,” a 24-minute documentary of the 1954 Milan High School boys state championship basketball team.

Before Indiana adopted its class tournament, teams from all sizes of schools competed against one another for the state title. In 1954, Milan, with an enrollment of 161, defeated Muncie Central (enrollment 1,662) 32-30 on a last-second shot by Bobby Plump.

The film includes footage from the game, clips of interviews from 11 of the players and footage of the following day’s celebration, where an estimated 40,000 people descended upon Milan, a town of 1,000.

Basketball enthusiasts from all over the United States sent messages of congratulations, and the team’s season was the basis for the movie “Hoosiers,” which relived the David versus Goliath event.

The artwork of the late Ed Funk will be displayed through April at the Southside Art League.

Funk (1943-2013) was born and raised in Indianapolis. While serving in the Navy from 1975-82, he traveled the Pacific Ocean, Japan, Thailand and the Middle East. He graduated from Herron School of Art in 1988.

In 1995 he bought Dolphin Papers and moved it to the old G.C. Murphy storefront in Fountain Square, helping establish first Fridays in the Indy arts scene. Funk was well-known for being an encourager to all artists he met, whether they were just starting out or accomplished professionals.

Funk’s friends say he was a prolific artist who will be remembered for his large colorful abstract paintings in different media and for his exquisitely detailed prints.

The gallery, open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays, is located at 299 E. Broadway St., Greenwood. To arrange for a viewing outside of those hours, call 882-5562.
