SUBMITTED PHOTO Bay Street Brassworks, an award-winning ensemble that regularly tours the United States, will take the stage at Greenwood United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 27. The band, led by trumpeter Glen Johnson, will play an eclectic mix of jazz, popular favorites, rock and American standards and will be joined in its performance by local musicians. Founded in 1995, the group has toured South Korea, received first prize at the New York Brass Quintet International Competition in 2003 and has worked with young audiences all over the country while bringing educational concerts to children in hundreds of schools. The blast of trumpets, the warmth of woodwinds and the thunder of percussion will be heard at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11, as the Pops Series at Garfield Park’s MacAllister Center for the Performing Arts, 2450 Shelby St., kicks off with a rousing performance of jazz, pop and classical tunes by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis.
Patrons can grab a seat in the amphitheater or bring blankets or lounge chairs and enjoy a picnic on the lawn. Either way, they’ll find themselves humming along to familiar melodies throughout the free concert. The series will continue on Thursdays through Aug. 20 with the Athenaeum Pops Orchestra taking the stage June 18. Subsequent performers are: Greater Greenwood Community Band, June 25; Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and fireworks show, July 1; Indianapolis Symphonic Band, July 9; Indianapolis Municipal Band, July 16; Pride of Indy concert and jazz bands, July 23; Jazz renegades Dance Band, July 30; New Horizons Band of Indianapolis, Aug. 6; Swing Shift Indy, Aug. 13; and Barton Rogers Big Band, Aug. 20. The park’s Movie on the Lawn program gets started at dusk Saturday with “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” behind the arts center. “Jurassic Park will be shown June 27, “Honey I Shrunk the Kids on July 25 and “Guardians of the Galaxy on Aug. 29. The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will perform in the Sunken Gardens at 7 p.m. June 4, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will take the center’s stage at 8 p.m. July 1.
