Free Cookout
As part of its community outreach program, Emmaus Lutheran Church, 1224 Laurel St., will host a free cookout Friday. Hotdogs, chips, ice cream sandwiches and drinks will be served from 6 p.m. until supplies last.  

Farmers Market Is Open

The Southport Farmers Market, 2810 E. Southport is open. Vendors are selling produce, eggs, baked goods, pet treats, toffee, jams, jellies, jewelry, plants and coffee from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesdays, 3-6 p.m. Thursdays.

Evening of Music at Garfield Park
BlakeStrong, an initiative that showcases the miraculous moments of Blake Bowell’s battle against brain cancer, will host a music festival Friday at the Garfield Park Sunken Gardens, 2450 Shelby St. The program gets underway with Free, But Not Cheap taking the stage at 6:30 p.m. Also performing will be Barbender, and Frank Bradford & Sons. Those attending can bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets. A $10 donation will be asked for admission. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Garden at the park and Alex Hayden, who is battling brain cancer.  

History of Southern Plaza Will Be Examined
The Perry Township/Southport Historical Society will look into the history of Southern Plaza – the Southside’s first big shopping center – when meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at the Perry Township Education center, 6548 Orinoco Ave. Info: 317-789-3979.

Church Will Celebrate First Anniversary in New Sanctuary
Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene, 1326 E. Sumner Ave., will celebrate its first year in its new sanctuary at 10:30 a.m. Sunday and 2 p.m. The Gospel Servants will sing at both services, and Dr. Ted Lee will be the speaker.

Plant Sale 
The Garfield Park Master Gardener Association’s annual plant sale will run from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Gardens, 2450 Shelby St. The sale will feature annual, perennial, native, water, vegetable and herb plants. Info: email pastpfct@aol.com. 

Church Serves Free Lunches 
University Heights United Methodist Church, 4002 Otterbein Ave., adjacent to the University of Indianapolis, will serve free lunches from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday. 

Free Meals, Clothing and Hygiene Items
Free hot meals, clothing and hygiene items will be available from noon-2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 725 S. State St.

Free Screenings for Skin Cancer

Franciscan Physician Network Central Indiana Dermatology will conduct free skin cancer screenings, including melanoma, from 5-7 p.m. today at 5255 E. Stop 11 Road, Suite 310. Melonoma is not the most prevalent type of skin cancer, but it is the most dangerous type. People at risk are those with fair skin, a history of sunburn and frequent exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun or tanning beds. Melanoma accounts for just 2 percent of skin cancer cases but claims up to 13,000 American lives annually, reports the American Cancer Society. Call 877-888-1777 to register.

Chalk Art Festival
The Garfield Park Arts Center, 2450 Shelby St., will host its annual Chalk Art Festival & Competition from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Musical entertainment will be provided by Flat Head Jones. Info: 317-327-7135 

Activities in Beech Grove
Every Wednesday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. is pizza and game night at Hornet Park Community Center, 5245 Hornet Ave., where children will be treated to free pizza from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Adult meals are $2.50. The movie “Zootopia” will be shown at 6 p.m. May 24. Admission is free. A farmers market is open from 3-6 p.m. Tuesdays at the corner of Churchman and Emerson avenues.
