Among the performing groups were The Sequinettes, which featured Jane Bass, Melanie Morgan, Michelle Winters, June Taylor, Deitra Winters, Patsy Moriarity, Nancy Fortuna, Gayle Burton, Autumn Vahle, Beth Byrum, Terri Mohr, Elise Roberts and Jody Milto.

Greenwood resident Kyle Young planned to ride his bicycle from Los Angeles to Boston to raise money for Special Olympics Indiana. Young guessed that he could cover 3,400 miles in about seven weeks.

Manual High School’s Exercise in Knowledge team which featured Karen Smith, Judy McBride, Jerry Steadham, Bill Styring, Ralph Tacoma and JoNeil Rugenstein, defeated Southport to claim the TV series championship. The Cardinals’ squad consisted of Jerry Nigh, Herb Smith, Pat McMurray, Larry May and Gilbert Mascher.

Southport juniors Harriet Schooley and Ray Daringer were expert “bugologists” and lived up to that billing by winning the district insect identification contest in Noblesville.

Army Pvt. William Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Colwell and a graduate of Manual High School, completed eight weeks of advanced infantry training at Fort Gordon, Ga.

Four chicken dinners, which included slaw, fries and a roll, cost $3.10 at Donut ‘N Dairyland, 1535 Prospect St.

Manual senior Michael Lepper attended a career development conference, designed to help develop marketing leaders.

Robert Dunn was named an assistant principal at Perry Meridian High School, which was opening its doors for the first time in the fall. A former guidance director at Manual, Dunn and his wife, Anne, lived in Carriage Estates with their children, Leslie and Cheri.

40 Years Ago This Week — 1983
Steve Purichia was named Perry Meridian’s new football coach. He replaced Kelly Clore, who had been at the school since it opened in 1973. Purichia previously coached at Chatard, where he was 86-19 over the past 10 years.

Becky Houser, Judith Mullinix and Marilyn Freeman, first-grade teachers at Homecroft Elementary, took their students to Gnaw Bone Camp in Nashville, Ind., for an overnight camping trip. A number of parents also enjoyed the excursion.

Richard Steele was named Manual’s Alumnus of the Year. A 1944 graduate, he served in the Navy in the Phillipine Islands for two years before earning degrees from Butler. Retired from Citizens Gas and Coke Utility, Steele and his wife had three children.

Indianapolis Police Department detective Bill Essex was the main speaker for a drug awareness program at Southport High School.

The Rev. Henry Date, senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Southport, announced his retirement after 20 years at the church and 40 years as a minister.

Destroyed by vandals earlier in the year, the cow mascots at Bynum’s Steak House, 3850 S. Meridian St., were replaced.

MacArthur Elementary’s student council held an appreciation tea for all the volunteers who helped at the school. Serving as hosts were Damon Acton, Josh Lyon, Emily Thomas, Tyler Putt, Theresa Collins, Ashley Brodt, Holly McGraw and Donna Labejof.

Fire Station 29 on East Pleasant Run Parkway in Garfield Park was one of the city’s first to be staffed by EMTs and an ambulance as part of an agreement between Wishard Hospital and the Indianapolis Fire Department.

M2, the robot that Homecroft Elementary fifth-grader Matt Wright built for his school’s science fair, was becoming quite popular. Through word-of-mouth, Matt had been asked to exhibit M2 in Danville and Franklin and at Ball State University. The robot could talk, move forward, blink its eyes and solve basic math problems.

National Bank of Greenwood promoted James Cecil, John Wilhite and John Morin to assistant vice presidents.
