Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1958

A furnished efficiency apartment in the Southport area rented for $50 a month.

King and queen candidates for Manual High School’s homecoming were Max Moneyhan, Norman Weddle, Bill Hair, Ronnie Miller, Dave Richards, Louise Holle, Sharon Larhman, Sonja Keating and Karen McDonald.

Ernie Rathz’s wife, Mae, gave birth to a 7-pound, 10-ounce boy, Mark. The score in the Rathz family read three girls and two boys.

Milk cost 58 cents a gallon; sugar was 49 cents for 5 pounds; and eight cans of corn cost $1.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1968
Southport Christian Church, 201 E. Epler Ave., was celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Delivery drivers for Darko Cleaners could earn $30 for working 18 hours a week.

Dorothy Moore, a graduate of Manual High School, joined the sales team of Colonial Realty.

Jan Fitzwater and Ann Lontz were chairwomen of the annual fall festival hosted by the PTA of Glenns Valley Elementary School.

McCarrel’s Jewelers offered free ear piercing by a trained professional with the purchase of a pair of earrings.

Rucker’s Greenhouse, 5336 Bluff Road, closed for the season, but it still let customers pick their own tomatoes, peppers and beans by appointment.

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1988
Hagan’s Inn, 1121 E. Troy Ave., was promoting its annual Lobsterfest. A 1-pound lobster tail dinner cost $10.95. * * * Dr. G. Benjamin Lantz Jr. was named the sixth president of the University of Indianapolis. * * * Dave Durrett opened the Video Shop at 2801 Fairview Place, Greenwood.

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1998
Tim and Debbie Shaw were the new owners of the Glass Gazebo on State Road 135 in Greenwood. Their menu featured bone-in prime rib, shrimp entrees and homemade soups. “We offer the finest dining in a casual atmosphere,” the Shaws said.

Center Grove’s marching band placed first in the Class C competition and earned grand championship honors at the Ben Davis Invitational.
* * *
John Overton, the 9-year-old son of Mike and Susan Overton, earned his black belt in karate after training for three years at Landers Karate School.

Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1958
Genevieve Green won 14 ribbons at the Indiana State Fair for her collection of dolls and handmade toys. Mrs. John E. Kleinhenz and Mrs. Paul J. Goben won 10 each for their culinary delights.

Mrs. Bill Patterson had her seventh baby in the past 6 1/2 years. Roll call at the Patterson home sounded like this: Agnes, 6; Billy, 5; Johnny, 4; Mike, 3; Patty, 2; Donny, 1; and newborn Mary Jo.

A corner lot at 7800 S. Meridian St. was listed for $1,500, and an electric stove in good condition was advertised for $50.

A center for children with learning disabilities was established at Crossroads Rehabilitation Center.

Dr. Francis W. Price was promoted to manager of Eli Lilly and Co.’s industrial medicine department. He and his family resided on East Edgewood Avenue.

J.D. Clothing Co., 1609 Prospect St., had marked 50 percent off most of its suits, which were priced from $47.50 to $59.

Arthur’s Music Store, 931 Shelby St., offered guitar, banjo, drum, piano and accordion lessons.

Southport High School was hosting its annual chicken and noodles dinner. The cost was $2 per adult, $1 per preteen. The dinner preceded the Southport-Perry Meridian football game at Perry Stadium.

A 12-pack of Wiedemann fine beer cost $2.39 at Dinner Bell Market, 2824 Shelby St., where cases of Wisconsin Club and Huber were priced at $3.79.

Teachers, administrators and most students at Southport High were united in their efforts to eliminate profanity at the school.

The Perry Township Education Foundation raised more than $13,000 during its annual golf outing. The winning foursome featured (from left) Stan Collins, Charlie Huber, Carl Fowler and John Dwenger. The putting contest was won by Jerry Wiggins for the second year in a row.

The seventh annual Championship Cat Show was being held at the Knights of Columbus, 511 E. Thompson Road. Proceeds would benefit the Morris Foundation, which fought animal diseases.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1978 Editor George Cafouros took the week off and didn’t publish a paper, but the following picture (below, right) was emailed to us last week.

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1998
Rolls-Royce Allison named David Siefker as its Trainee of the Year. The award was presented to an engineering student who had participated in either the company’s education or summer intern programs and subsequently has been hired as a full-time employee. Siefker, a graduate of Purdue University, was the son of Robert and Theresa Siefker of Greenwood.

Jason Ryan, a member of Boy Scout Troop 107 in Franklin Township, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor attainable in Scouting.

The starting pay for car washers at Kopetsky’s, 2640 Madison Ave., was $7.25 an hour. Deli clerks and cashiers at Shapiro’s, 808 S. Meridian St., could expect to start at between $7 and $8 an hour.
