The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra was going to perform a pops concert at Manual High School. Admission was $1.

Zuckerberg’s, a clothing and shoe store at 1001 S. Meridian St., was holding its annual midwinter sale.

The Salty Dogs, a Dixieland band featuring students from Purdue, and Nick Craig’s Orchestra were performing at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.

The Shelby Furniture Co., 1113 Shelby St., had marked 50 percent off its chairs, lamps and tables. 
* * *
Grocery specials of the week at Miller’s Regal Market, corner of Madison and Terrace avenues, included three frozen pot pies for 69 cents; a pound of Chase & Sanborn coffee, 95 cents; a 10-pound bag of flour, 89 cents; four 14-ounce bottles of Heinz catsup, 99 cents; and three 5-pound bags of oranges or grapefruits, $1.

Nickel Heating & Air Conditioning opened a retail branch at 5401 Madison Ave. The company sold and serviced gas, oil and electric furnaces and air-conditioners.

Dorothy Motley was retiring from her duties as auditor of Perry Township Schools.

Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
Jimmy Vaugh was the new golf pro at Lake Shore Country Club, 4301 Carson Ave. He had previously served as the pro at Pleasant Run Golf Course.

Indiana’s nine largest cities had more telephones (626,000) than all of China and India combined (521,000).
* * *
Indianapolis Lodge 56 of the Knights of Pythias and Irvington Temple 411 of the Pythian Sisters were going to install their officers. 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
Darlene Sayers, a 1963 graduate of Southport High School and a senior at Anderson College, was awarded a grant in the honors programs for chemistry at Argonne National Laboratory. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grada Sayers.

Southport High School’s Exercise in Knowledge team defeated Cathedral in the first round of the academic tournament. The varsity squad featured Vivian Heacox, Theresa Hill, James Wells and Sue Thompson. Walter Beaver, Ross Patronsky, Jill Brown and Bob Tucker were on the reserve team.

Dr. Milton E. Collins was hired to serve as a psychological consultant to Perry Township Schools. Collins also had a private practice at the Turtle Creek Medical Center.

Frank Bixler was elected to University Heights Hospital’s board of directors. A graduate of Manual High School and Harvard College, Bixler went into business with his brother, George Jr., in 1947, when establishing the Southern Circle Dairies and Southern Circle Drive-in Restaurant. They owned Southern Plaza and Greenbriar and Greentree apartments and had developed several housing additions. 
 
Forty Years Ago This Week – 1977
Mark Beery joined the sales staff of Schmadeke Realtors. A graduate of Ball State, he was an associate member of the Indianapolis Board of Realtors.

Madeline Manning Jackson, who won a gold medal in the 800-meter run at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, was going to address the congregation of Southwood Assembly of God, 8700 Meridian St.

Featuring closeout shoes and factory seconds, Save-More Shoe Store, 2202 Shelby St., offered quality shoes at 30 to 70 percent off the regular price.

Lucky Steer Family Restaurants, 8041 Madison Ave., offered buffet fish dinners for $2.79. The cost included fries or a baked potato, vegetables and a salad bar.

Dr. Edward G. Garry relocated his dental practice to 1090 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, where he would be joined by Dr. David Buksar.

Spotlight Editor and Publisher Jerry Cosby and fellow publisher Jim Thomas and his son, Ty, returned from a ski trip to Michigan. Cosby reported that skiing was great, the slopes were beautiful and snowmobiling was a blast.

The girls basketball teams from Center Grove and Perry Meridian high schools continued to dominate area action as they were both 13-0.

Students and teachers from Calvary Lutheran School were entertained by The Mariachi Juvenile Guadalupano Band from Mexico. Pictured doing the macarena were Blake Harvey, Patsy Bock, Jerrica Faulkner, Matt O’Haver, Heidi Emmelman, Laura Spelde, Katie Richert and Jared Cantrell.

The American chapter of the International Travel Club held its monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Basi Fischer.

Pitman-Moore employees Glenn Higgins and Elsie Duhn were honored for their 35 years of service with the pharmaceutical company. Robert I. Barnhorst was recognized for 25 years of service. 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
“Papa Buck” Henry F. Buck and his sons, Robert, Richard and Don, broke ground for the new Buck’s Supermarket at Meridian Street and Troy Ave.

 Le Scene, central Indiana’s only discotheque for the under-21 crowd, opened at 1116 Prospect St. The club featured live bands, including Our Generation, whose members were Mike Ray, Mike Stack, Al Smith, Dave Fitch and Doug Kennerly.

Southport United Methodist Church appointed the Rev. Howard Chattin as its pastor.
* * *
The Rev. Howard Chattin, the new pastor of Southport United Methodist Church, was going to address the Methodist Men’s Club.

G.C. Murphy in Fountain Square was holding a truckload sale of upholstered platform rockers, which had been marked down to $19.95 from $29.95. If you bought two or more, they were only $15 each.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1977
The Indiana State Employment Service advertised the following jobs: concrete brick mason, $6 an hour; diesel engine mechanic, $5 an hour; neighborhood coordinator, $8,000 annually; sales associate, $800 a month plus commission; and keypunch operator; $143 a week.

The sales staff at Schmadeke Realtors featured Don Skillman, Roger Williams, Kay Vahle, Jo Molina, Delores Aldridge, Marty Sandefer, Harry Docke, Gloria Docke, Alice Miller, Tom Hildebrand, Larry Tuttle, Rick Kern and Mark Beery.

A three-bedroom home with 1 1/2 baths in Greenwood was listed for $29,000; a new four-bedroom home in Perry Township cost $49,900; and a four-bedroom brick home in Hill Valley cost $40,900.

Eight 16-ounce bottles of Pepsi cost 99 cents, as did a pound of sirloin steak. A 12-ounce box of Nabisco triple decker cookies were 69 cents.

Manual High School senior Rhonda R. Hawley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hawley, won district honors at the American Legion’s oratorical contest and qualified for the district competition.

After nearly 40 years with Indiana National Bank, Joseph C. Buergler retired as executive vice president for consumer banking.

Michael H. Zunk was named Indianapolis’ fifth police chief in the past five years. He was a member of the Indianapolis Police Department from the late 1960s until retiring as commander in 1988 to serve as security director of the Naval Air Warfare Center.

Center Grove’s and Perry Meridian’s girls basketball teams were off to 12-0 and 9-0 starts, respectively. Beech Grove’s and Southport’s boys teams were struggling with 0-8 and 1-9 records.

Marsha Baker, a server at Holiday Inn Southeast, and Darlene Day, a housekeeper at Quality Inn South, were nominated for the sixth annual ROSE (Recognition of Service Excellence) Awards.

Catherine S. Tucker, daughter of Robert D. Tucker and Ann Matzek and a graduate of Jefferson City High School, was engaged to T.J. Carroll, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Caroll and a graduate of Perry Meridian and Indiana State University.

C.R. Wilsey was named to serve as chairman of the Heart Fund in Marion County. He was charged with coordinating the work of more than 9,000 volunteers, whose goal was to raise $163,500.

More than 900 owners and managers of Indiana retail stores planned to introduce legislation in the General Assembly to halt Sunday retail sales, excluding food and drug items.

Jimmy McDaniels played the piano Monday through Saturday nights at the Driftwood Lounge, 3512 Madison Ave. (Editor’s note: Teenagers loved the place because it was known for serving minors.)

The new Eli Lilly and Co. building under construction off the 1200 block of Madison Avenue was going to be the tallest structure on the Southside.

St. Patrick Grade School’s seventh-and eighth-grade basketball team won the Sacred Heart Holiday Tournament behind the offensive firepower of Ray Boylan, Paul Lombardo, Frank Venezia and Dan Bayt.

Jennifer Herron, a 1980 graduate of Roncalli, was a choreographer for the Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders. She also operated a fitness studio at 2210 E. Southport Road.

Re/Max Realtor Daniel T. Moriarty was appointed regional vice president of the national Residential Sales Council, which served Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. He and his wife, Melinda, had two children.
