60 Years Ago This Week — 1963
Jack Short was elected grand knight of Monsignor Downey Knights of Columbus, 511 E. Thompson Road. Other officers were Frank Wuensch, deputy grand knight; Cosmos Mascari, chancellor; Joe Wohlhieter, recorder; Michael Smith; treasurer; William Penish, advocate; John Finneran, warden; Frank Herbertz, inside guard; Fred Kleifgen and Michael Mascari, outside guards; Daniel F. O’Riley, trustee; and Hugh Baker and Gilbert Hewitt, realty board.

Michel Drug Store, which had shops on Shelby and Prospect streets, featured many specials, including rain bonnets for 4 cents; tooth brushes, 9 cents; summer caps, 14 cents; and rolls of film, 39 cents.

New houses in Suburban Acres off Fry Road in Greenwood were listed for $13,500. The three-bedroom homes offered 1,200 square feet of living space. After a down payment of $450, the monthly payments were $72.84.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
Coached by Dick Brunoehler, Baxter YMCA’s swimming team traveled to Wisconsin to compete against the Wauwautosa Swim Club, which was mentored by Bob White. The unusual meeting came about because both coaches were former teammates on Indiana University’s swimming team and often talked about their squads battling it out.

Perry Township’s new fire trucks were displayed at Southern Plaza and the AFNB branch in Southport.
* * *
Village Inn Pizza Parlor, 514 E. Hanna Ave., offered a buffet spaghetti dinner for $1.75, which included pizza, salad and garlic bread.

40 Years Ago This Week — 1983
Air Force 2nd Lt. Jeff Powell welcomed his father, Staff Sgt. Doug Powell, into the Indiana Air National Guard. Jeff, a 1983 graduate of Purdue, was attached to Bernstein Air Force Base in Austin, Texas, and attended graduate school at Texas A&M. Doug was employed by Dow Chemical Co.

Crawford Donnelly exhibited his paintings at Pro Art Studio, 5224 Madison Ave..
* * *
Roncalli salutatorian Greg Corsaro and Susie Kuntz were named The Indianapolis Star’s City Athletes of the Year. Corsaro was all-everything in football and excelled in the shot put and discus. Kuntz was the school’s Most Valuable Player in basketball and softball, having a .500 batting average while committing only one error in three seasons.

St. Jude Catholic Church hosted a going-away party for the Rev. Gerald Burket, who was transferring to Holy Family Parish in New Albany, Ind.

30 Years Ago This Week — 1993
Sarah Bogard was appointed principal of Manual High School, replacing the retiring Eugene Austin.

Gary Jay pedalled his way down West Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive on a unicycle while toting two lawn chairs. “Just headin’ down to Garfield Park to watch a Little League game,” he said.

Marion LaGrotto, who had owned Boot Hill Shoe Repair, 2016 E. Prospect St., for 18 years, was retiring.

Jenny Weddle from Southport High School’s varsity cheerleading squad was named Miss Indiana Cheer Camp for her jumping ability and enthusiasm. Other members of the squad were Lyn Nguyen, Alissa Haganman, Nancy Claus, Charmayne Smith, Gina Armstrong, Nicole Tomamichel and Tamika Eversole.

20 Years Ago This Week — 2003
Former Southport High School Principal Larry Hensley-Marschand was named assistant superintendent of Franklin Community Schools.

State officials were investigating 10 cases of a poxlike illness closely related to monkeypox. The virus was thought to be transmitted through recently purchased exotic animals. Also, officials reported that mosquitoes in Marion County tested positive for the West Nile virus.

Theodore and Helen Munn celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria in Greenwood. The Munns had four children, Ronald, David and the deceased Shirley Ann Munn and Katherine Green, 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Center Grove High School’s softball team won the Class 3A state title by defeating defending champion Lake Central 2-0. The Trojans’ Brittany Hedrick received the Mental Attitude Award.

60 Years Ago This Week — 1963
WISH-TV 8 filmed portions of the Strawberry Art Festival at the Southside YMCA, 1941 E. Hanna Ave., and planned to air them on “The June Ford Show.”

The American Cancer Society announced that it was possible to cure 50 percent of all cancer cases.
* * * 
The “World Book Yearbook” reported that many older teens faced a bleak future because they were undereducated, unskilled and unemployed.
* * *
Six hamburgers cost 99 cents at Henry’s, 3845 S. U.S. 31, where four fish sandwiches with crisp lettuce and zesty tartar sauce were 99 cents.
* * *
A quarter-pound deluxe hamburger with fries cost 65 cents at the diner inside Woolworth’s at Southern Plaza.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
The Southport Masonic Lodge, 5678 S. U.S. 31, fried 3 tons of fish in what was billed as Indiana’s largest fish fry. More than 300 volunteers were needed to coordinate the two-day affair. Golden brown fish was served from noon until well in the evening.

G.C. Murphy’s in Fountain Square held a Father’s Day Sale and featured short-sleeved shirts for $1.94, grills for $5.44 and a 26-inch cut Huffy riding mower for $247.

The Southside Neighbor Association was fighting against the proposed low-income apartment complex in the 2700 block of Pennsylvania Street.

After months of restoring its community, the Fountain Square Neighborhood Association hosted a home show.

The boy’s volleyball team from Southport High School qualified for the state tournament. The squad consisted of (front, from left) Jordan Hartman, Jeff Schlageter; (back) Terry McMurray, Tyler Hussey, Nick Stanton, John Hayden and Nick Buck. They were coached by Bobby Schlageter, Cindy Maude and Stacy Matlock.

The Old Glory project in Southport was responsible for 150 flags adorning utility polls. The initiative called for another 100 flags, all of which would be flown from Memorial Day to Sept. 11 every year.

Perry Township Schools welcomed four new administrators to the district: Tom Galovic, assistant principal at Southport High; Ruth Turner, principal at Lincoln Elementary; Claire Taylor, director of Rosa-Parks Edison Elementary; and Andrea Korreck, principal at Mary Bryan Elementary.

St. Roch Cub Scouts John Atkinson, Steve Dugan, Nick Summers, Richard Thane, Joe Mennel, Phil Taylor, Dennis Lanahan and Eddie Daeger received the Parvuli Dei (to the altar of God) Award for living an exemplary Christian life.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
Steven Tilden, a 1966 graduate of Southport High School, and Robert Miller opened The House of Sirloin at 902 E. Hanna Ave., where a 7-ounce sirloin steak dinner was served for $1.99.

H.H. Gregg appliances opened its fourth store in Anderson and celebrated the occasion by holding a huge sale at its south Indy site, 5501 Madison Ave. The hottest buy was a 12-inch color TV for $69.

Mark Spitz, the Olympic swimmer who won seven gold medals at the summer games in Munich, tried his luck on stage as a dentist on a Bob Hope special. Critics said he should have stuck to swimming.

In addition, Damien Yee, Bob Holder, Warren Maccaroni, Brad Sharffer, Jenny Criss, Beth Parks, Jeremy Jones, Jeff Wooden, Eileen Pix, Cindi Wooden, Rena Beristain and Rob Sulver served as counselors for handicapped children who attended Camp Riley in Martinsville.

30 Years Ago This Week — 1993
Dr. Horace “Buzz” Hickman was named Southport High School’s Alumnus of the Year. The 1962 graduate was the medical director of the catheterization lab at St. Francis Hospital. He and his wife, Pamela, had three children, Bret, Angie and Dawn.

Margaret LaGrotto retired from Indianapolis Public Schools after 42 years as a teacher. She had taught at Schools 65, 47 and 95. Also retiring after lengthy careers were Southport High School educators Mary Holeman and John Dwenger.

Unseasonably cool weather kept city pools from opening on time, but that didn’t stop Mayor Stephen Goldsmith from outlining his plan to spend $10 million to renovate municipal parks. Perry Park was earmarked for a $1.6 million facelift, and Garfield Park would see $600,000 in improvements.

St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church held its 40th annual Strawberry Festival. A serving of shortcake, sliced strawberries and ice cream cost $3.

Lutheran High School took first-place honors among small schools in the Purdue Academic Super Bowl English competition. The team featured Zach Reed, Erin Duggan, Joe Conley and Laurie Lehenbauer.

Manual High School Principal C. Edgar Stahl awarded diplomas to 365 seniors.

Larry Sanders, a prominent businessman and a civic leader, opened Larry’s Cocktail Lounge & Steak House at 3709 Madison Ave. Sanders boasted that he served fabulous lobster dinners and the most tender steaks in Indianapolis.

The Kiwanis Club of South Indianapolis honored area high school students for academic excellence. The students, their school and expertise were: Robert Humes, Manual, electronics; Ed Bergman, Franklin Central, machine and tool shop; David Reid, Beech Grove, drafting; Larry Carrel, Southport, mechanical drawing and electronics; Leodus Moore, Wood, barbering; and Thomas Ratz, Sacred Heart, mechanical drawing.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
The 11th District of the American Legion hosted an ox roast at German Park, 8600 S. Meridian St.

Southsiders continued to fight the proposed location of the Indianapolis Stockyards to 800 W. Troy Ave. Advocates of the move hoped the drawn-out process would lessen the opposition’s fight. But that wasn’t happening as the “Paul Reveres,” the so-called activists battling the rezoning, were growing stronger by the day.

Dr. Bruce McLaughlin, a 1973 graduate of Purdue, joined the staff of Meridian Veterinary Clinic. An alumnus of Southport High School, he lived with his wife, Sandy.

The Spotlight staff enjoyed the week off and didn’t publish a paper.

30 Years Ago This Week — 1993
Arie Luyendyk sat on the pole for the Indianapolis 500. His four-lap speed of 223.967 was a half-mph faster than Mario Andretti, who was in the middle of the front row. Raul Boesel was on the outside of Row 1.

Southport High School graduate Jim Krivacs was named to the school’s Wall of Fame for his contributions to sports. Krivacs, who graduated in 1974, made a name for himself playing basketball for the Cardinals and at the University of Texas.

Southport High named Kirby Lee and Lisa West as its valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kam Lee, planned to study chemical engineering at either Purdue or MIT. West, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sipes, intended to study allied health at DePauw.

The squad included Rachel MacBeth, Brittany Fowler, Carrie Dixon, Natalie Boyer, Jennifer Williams, Stephanie Atkins, coach Kami Hughes, Brittany Atwood, Jordan Allen, Emily Nolan, Rebecca Lindsey, Kristen Raker, Maggie Cooper, Danielle Finke and Megan Priest.

The softball teams from Franklin Central, Lutheran and Roncalli high schools won sectional titles.
