Coached by Dick Brunoehler, Baxter YMCA’s swimming team traveled to Wisconsin to compete against the Wauwautosa Swim Club, which was mentored by Bob White. The unusual meeting came about because both coaches were former teammates on Indiana University’s swimming team and often talked about their squads battling it out.

Air Force 2nd Lt. Jeff Powell welcomed his father, Staff Sgt. Doug Powell, into the Indiana Air National Guard. Jeff, a 1983 graduate of Purdue, was attached to Bernstein Air Force Base in Austin, Texas, and attended graduate school at Texas A&M. Doug was employed by Dow Chemical Co.

Roncalli salutatorian Greg Corsaro and Susie Kuntz were named The Indianapolis Star’s City Athletes of the Year. Corsaro was all-everything in football and excelled in the shot put and discus. Kuntz was the school’s Most Valuable Player in basketball and softball, having a .500 batting average while committing only one error in three seasons.
