1989- The Old Country Buffet celebrated its grand opening at Southern Plaza, 4200 S. East St. On hand for the event were (in no particular order) Sean Vincent, Christina Morrison, LaDonna Warman, John Slazas, Evan Gilmore, Randy Serafini, Vern Vincent, Mark Wilson, Lyman Hall and district manager Ken Pabst.

60 Years Ago This Week - 1959
John Brooks opened John’s Sunoco Service at 3900 S. East St. As part of his grand-opening celebration he gave away four glass tumblers to every customer who purchased 10 or more gallons of gas.

The Golden Drive-In Restaurant, 3225 Shelby St., served a whole broasted chicken for $1.65 on Wednesdays.

Kay’s Dairy bar opened at 1414 S. Meridian St., and advertised half-gallons of milk for 27 cents; a gallon was 49 cents.  

50 Years Ago This Week - 1969
Billy Walker and The Tennessee Walkers of Grand Ole Opry fame were performing at Garfield Park.

Southport High School Pam Dravis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Dravis, was named queen of the Indy 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

William A. “Bill” Bright, assistant professor of education at Indiana Central College, was named the school’s associate director of education. He also served as head baseball and cross-country coach and assistant basketball coach.

40 Years Ago This Week - 1979
Heavy rain flooded the baseball diamonds at the Edgewood Little League Association and caused more than $15,000 in damage.

Jeff Daniels, Kyle Nickander and Gary Hendrickson played on the Indiana AAU junior basketball team (11- and 12-year-olds) that won the Olympic tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

Linda Zickler joined the sales staff of Landtree Realtors.

.Richard Kastner, a graduate of Southport High School who attended Vincennes University, was named plant superintendent of Construction Materials in Baton Rouge, La.

Mike Quebe and Rick Kelly were celebrating their 40th birthdays, and David Ferguson was turning 50.

Doug’s 31 Bar & Grill, 3131 Shelby St., known for serving free hot wings every Sunday evening, was hosting a hog roast.

Patricia Flowers was named an assistant principal at Southport High School, and Joe A. Cantou was named boys varsity basketball coach and would also serve as a social studies teacher.

60 Years Ago This Week - 1959
Union Federal Savings and Loan Association was giving away $1,000 in savings accounts in celebration of its new branch at 2554 Madison Ave. The top prize was $750, with $5 and $1 accounts also being awarded.

Crossroads Tavern, 2179 Bluff Road, boasted that it served good food at all hours. 

50 Years Ago This Week - 1969
Eddie “The King” Feigner and His Court, a four-man touring softball team, was going to play the Indianapolis Jaycees at Municipal Stadium. (The King had played more than 10,000 games in a hundred countries from the late 1940s to the beginning of the 21st century. Feigner’s meticulous records indicate 9,743 victories, 141,517 strikeouts, 930 no-hitters and 238 perfect games.)

Manual High School’s evening program offered classes for the completion of elementary grades.

Adrian Orchards, 500 E. Epler Ave., was harvesting apples and peaches.

Perry Township teachers Bill Greathouse, Ken Knable and Jim Nichols attended the 117th annual convention of the National Education Association in Detroit.

Jack Smart Ford, U.S. 31 and County Line Road, held its first yard sale. Used cars were priced from $95, and 10W40 oil was 49 cents a quart when purchased by the gallon.

30 Years Ago This Week - 1989
The City-County Council appropriated $700,000 for the construction of a new fire station to replace the aging facility at Shelby and Tabor streets.

Indiana Bible College was finalizing its plans to purchase the old University Heights Hospital, which was near the University of Indianapolis.
* * *
The Perry Township Board of Education elected its officers: Dr. William F. Hohlt, president; Susan Altman, vice president; and John Hammond, secretary.

Taco Tuesday at Club Mark, corner of Madison Avenue and Stop 11 Road, featured tacos and draft beer for 25 cents.

20 Years Ago This Week - 1999
Members of St. Francis Hospital’s catheterization lab department participated in the Johnson County American Heart Walk. The walkers were, from left,  Julie Kutsch, Teresa Meyers, Karla Hurt, Sherry and Tom Riley, Carla and Nick Hopkins, Kris Vance and Patty Naberhaus.

The Indiana Soccer Coaches Association named Roncalli seniors Keith Gantner and Scott Sahm to its All-State second team.

Homegrown cabbage cost 29 cents a pound at Hafer Bros. Gardens, 2856 S. Meridian St.
