Peerless Corp. celebrated 63 years in the heating and air-conditioning business by opening an ultramodern display room and sales office at 3125 Madison Ave.

In recognition of their community service, Robert and Jerry Cauble and William Miller were presented God and Country Awards by Boy Scouts of Central Indiana.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
Former Indianapolis 500 champions A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Al and Bobby Unser and Mark Donohue headed the entry list for the 57th running of the race. The total purse was a little more than $1 million, of which $236,000 would go to the winner.

The Perry Education Association held its annual recognition dinner to honor retiring teachers.
* * *
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital presented one of its Outstanding Teenager Awards to Southport High School student Pam Hume. In addition, fellow Cardinals Sue Kaster and William Brown were recognized for their efforts in raising funds for the hospital, which was located in Memphis, Tenn.

40 Years Ago This Week — 1983
The Perry Township Kiwanis Club raised $10,000 during its benefit auction, which was called by Dick Crafton.

Manual’s fundraising pow wow featured a fish fry, games and a dance. King and queen candidates were freshmen John Barron and Becky Ganstine, sophomores Jonathon Berle and Karmona Coleman, juniors Mitchell Johnson and Janet Arnold and seniors John Page and Cathy Yeager.

Southport High School’s PTA held its annual Cardinal Run, which featured 1-, 3- and 6-mile runs. Among the entrants were Greg Todd, a sportscaster for Channel 6 News.

The Studebaker Realty Co. welcomed Tracy Angerer to its sales staff.

The pistol range at Eagle Creek Park opened for the season.

Through a program sponsored by the University Heights Neighborhood Association, Jeanie Hawes and Laurann Brown helped to plant trees and level the playground at Southside Park, 1941 E. Hanna Ave.

The Southport 11-year-old girls AAU basketball team took second-place honors in the Tri-County tournament in Edinburgh. Squad members were Kayla Brown, Haley Fenton, Emily Baxter, Samantha and Stephanie Shove, Rachel Tackett, Leanna Lucas, Erika Summey, Ashley Burkman and coach Dan Burkman.

In memoriams were published for Rodney Brown, John Daughtery Jr., Bud Lamberti, Robbie Skaggs, Harlan “Duke” Duhamell and Grandpa “Red” Nevitt.

Ray Daniel, a 28-year veteran in the restaurant business, was named manager of the Chick-fil-A at 5240 E. Southport Road.

​Southport High School named Charles “Chuck” Stumpf Jr. as its Alumnus of the Year. A 1963 graduate, Stumpf was a former accountant and had played an active role on the Perry Township Board of Education. He and his wife, Georgia, had one son, Ted, who graduated from Southport in 1988.

Perry Meridian High School presented “Peter Pan the Musical.”
* * *
Cyber Blue, the robotics team from Perry Meridian High School, teamed with the squads from Carmel and Lafayette to share the Crossroads regional championship at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

60 Years Ago This Week — 1963
The Singer Sewing Machine Co., a newcomer in the typewriter business, lowered the price of its most expensive typewriter to $99.95. That model and others could be seen at the company’s store in Southern Plaza, 4200 S. U.S. 31.

Martin McDermott, the fourth generation in his family to own the M. Clune Co. furniture store, which was founded in 1854, opened Martin’s Fine Furniture at 5410 S. Meridian St.

The route of the 500 Festival Parade would include Monument Circle for the first time in five years. The Circle had been off limits because its concrete pedestrian traffic islands — which were recently removed — hampered the movement of floats.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
“Music With the Animals,” a children’s Easter concert, was held at the Indianapolis Zoo, 3120 E. 30th St.

The annual Easter lily show at the Garfield Park Conservatory, 2450 Shelby St., featured more than 600 flowers.

A pharmacy opened in the $13 million addition at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove.

The Masque and Wig Theatrical Group held auditions for Neil Simon’s “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” at Bluff Cultural and Recreational Center, 555 W. Hanna Ave.

Falcons Against Drunk Driving was launched by a group of Perry Meridian High School students to emphasize the dangers of drinking and driving.

Sassy Brass, a 13-piece big band that cranked out lively tunes, performed at Barringer’s, 2535 S. Meridian St., where the cover charge was $1.

The Leisure, a new lounge located in the Zayre Shopping Center, 3825 S. U.S 31, featured shrimp cocktails for 99 cents, two-for-one drinks and daily dinner specials.

30 Years Ago This Week — 1993
Comfort Inn South desk manager Kimberly Miller was named the hotel’s Employee of the Year.

KIPS (Kiwanis Improvement-Southport) scholarships, funded by Tom Dunham of Dunham Rubber, were presented to Southport High School students Veronica Eckstein, Brian Atkinson, Tarah Boone, Nick Buck, Kyle Exline, Marsha Hawes, Tyler Hussey, Jack Petty and Jessica Wiley.

Indy Parks ranger Phil Greene went over a safety checklist before igniting a controlled burn at Glenns Valley Park. The fire eliminated the build-up of thatch and dead plant tops, which inhibited plant growth, and gave fire departments the opportunity to train on fighting wildfires.

10 Years Ago This Week — 2013
David Blasé, a member of Phi Kappa Psi’s 1962 Little 500 championship bicycle team, rode his bike 200 miles weekly.

Although cold weather didn’t provide the ideal atmosphere for Southport Little League’s opening day, Delvan Roehling, the organization’s president, said he couldn’t recall any that were more exciting.

The PTA of Lincoln Elementary School elected its officers: Mrs. George Coldren, president; Mrs. John Ellis, first vice president; Mrs. Robert Holbrook, second vice president; Mrs. Harold Houston, secretary; and Russel Ayers, treasurer.

Marvin’s Drive-in Liquor Store, 2850 Madison Ave., boasted more than 250 varieties of spirits and wine and an almost endless supply of cold beer.

Cub Scout Pack at Olive Branch Christian Church, 101 E. Raymond St., held its first meeting. Friedens United Methodist Church presented a dramatic interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper.”

A pound of jelly beans cost 28 cents; a pound of coconut cream eggs were 53 cents; and a 1-pound chocolate Easter bunny cost 76 cents.

40 Years Ago This Week — 1983
Dave Muns and Judith Price were married at Hagan’s Tavern, 1121 E. Troy Ave. Why there? Because the bride’s parents, Tom and Mildred Edwards, had been patronizing the bar since it opened in 1946. Paul and Jill Muns served as honor attendants, with Mike Mayer officiating.

The Docs vs. Jocks vs. Drugs benefit basketball game was played at Manual. The Docs squad featured physicians from St. Francis Hospital: (front) manager Don Kerner, Brian Miles, Marvin Christie, coach William Buffie; (back) Donald Rockey, Robert Robinson, Tim Nussbaum and Matt Phillips.

Perry Township Schools disappointed its students when announcing that two snow days would be made up.

Dr. H. Douglas Williams was named the new superintendent of Perry Township Schools.

Sound System, Center Grove High School’s choral and dance group, was named grand champion at the National Showstoppers Show Choir Invitational in New York City, where Aubrey Baumgartner and Ryan Handy were finalists in the solo competition.

Jim Edison, 1950 graduate of Manual, was named the school’s Alumnus of the Year. He majored in music education at Butler and was a longtime teacher. Edison and his wife, June, had three children and seven grandchildren.

Roncalli graduate Joey Matis became Hanover College’s winningest baseball pitcher by notching his 25th career victory.

Jacob Cottey, a second-grader on the Perry Meridian Wrestling Club, won the folkstyle state championship in the 45-pound division.

First-year University of Indianapolis tennis coach Malik Taney had the boys and girls teams off to 6-3 and 5-3 records, respectively. Caleb Fellers, one of his top players, led Center Grove High School to a state title in 2008. Others area players were Austin Ruddel, Matt Smith, Trevor Cox, Taylor Eckhart and Macey Speer.

Jamie Billings, a 2002 Indiana Golden Gloves champion in the women’s division, owned Self-Defense Systems/Indy Boxing South.

Fox’s Roller Skating Rink, 3432 Madison Ave., was hopping with several big events.

More than 7,000 people attended Perry Township’s 29th Easter Sunrise Service at Southport Fieldhouse.
* * *
Of the 240 students who made the honor roll at Manual High School, Jeanette Klein topped the list with 48 points. She was followed by Lynne Simmerman with 46 points; Nancy Broz, Jude McBride and Ralph Tacoma had 44 points apiece.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
Construction on Perry Meridian High School, which was slated to open in the fall, was on schedule.

Coached by Bob Robisch, Bob Kirkhoff and Jerry Rode, the seventh- and eighth-grade basketball team at St. Jude School won the Catholic Youth Organization city tournament. The squad featured Ronny Schludecker, Jeff Jourdon, Rick Harvey, Jim Jones, Kevin Zweisler, Bill Randolph, Kevin Field, Paul Buergler, Bart Becker, Nick Wehlage and Tom Conner. Two players were listed by only their last name: Church and Sherman. The cheerleaders were Peggy Border, Kathy Cook, Donna Kern, Debbie Berretta, Christie Buergler, Kathy Baldwin, Kim O’Neil, Patty Kesterson and Betty Sue Hurley, with little Marianne Kirkhoff serving as team mascot.

City officials reached a labor agreement with the union representing Indianapolis Fire Department dispatchers. The contract called for 2 percent raises the next two years, 3 percent in 2005 and 3.5 percent in 2006.
