60 Years Ago This Week — 1963
Trailblazer District Boy Scouts Jack Thompson, Gerry Wallace and Joe Potte were recognized for their community service.

Mrs. Harry Saleba and Mrs. Robert Mobley of Homecroft Elementary School’s PTA and Principal Melvin Mosier presided over a tree-planting ceremony at the school, where students Donald Buckley and John Krass recited a poem before the program.

Andy Westboe was named manager of El Dorado Golf and Country Club, 2080 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, and he planned to introduce a Sunday buffet.

Owned by Russell and Jack Elder and located just north of Greenwood on U.S. 31, Elder Bros. Flower and Garden celebrated its grand opening by giving away a rosebush with each purchase.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
Touted as one of Southern Plaza’s biggest events of the year, Fair Days featured rides, games and food.

40 Years Ago This Week — 1983
Perry Meridian senior Suzanne Boyle, daughter of John and Judy Boyle, won a $200 college scholarship from the Southside Art League.

M2, the robot that Homecroft Elementary fifth-grader Matt Wright built for his school’s science fair, was becoming quite popular. Through word-of-mouth, Matt had been asked to exhibit M2 in Danville and Franklin and at Ball State University. The robot could talk, move forward, blink its eyes and solve basic math problems.

National Bank of Greenwood promoted James Cecil, John Wilhite and John Morin to assistant vice presidents.

Perry Park, 451 E. Stop 11 Road, was undergoing a $500,000 renovation.

30 Years Ago This Week — 1993 
Winners in the Indiana PTA student art contest included Lennon Bishop, Kristin Nelson, Chad Rainey, Brian Slack, Kyle Rainey, Karen Mauser, Deon Perkins, Raymond Boatright, Sophie Faught and Erica Rose.

The Indianapolis Department of Transportation held a public meeting to discuss renovating Keystone Avenue from Redfern Drive to Raymond Street.

Indianapolis police officers took to horseback and bicycles during Earth Day festivities at Garfield Park.

Thirty-seven Manual High School students were honored by Eli Lilly and Co. for their academic achievements.

Aaron Cantrell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cantrell, and Sanjay Mohanty, son of Ray Mohanty and the late Bhabani Mohanty, were named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, at Perry Meridian. Elizabeth Stevens, daughter of Anita and Jeffrey Stephens, and Amelia Mae Huehls, daughter of Francis and Patrick Huehls, were Southport’s valedictorian and salutatorian.

Roncalli freshman Kevin Sheehan had the role of Geppetto in Young Actors Theatre’s production of “Pinocchio.”
