60 Years Ago This Week — 1963
The big talk in local appliance circles centered on the huge tent sale that J.C. Brill Appliances was holding in Southern Plaza. Owner Mr. Brill stated that his prices couldn’t be beaten.

The starting pay for an office girl who could take light dictation and had a general knowledge of accounting was $1.75 an hour.

The average monthly Social Security check was $76.80.
* * *
Marilee Lauck was crowned queen of Marian College’s prom. A senior and the daughter Mr. and Mrs. Leo Lauck, Marilee was majoring in business administration.

Featuring music by the The Rhythmaires, St. Jude Parish’s annual “500” ball was just days away.

A secondhand crib in excellent condition was advertised for $15; a 17-inch TV was listed for $25; a used electric stove cost $30; a three-bedroom, half-double rented for $65 a month; and a 1959 Plymouth Belvedere was advertised for $545.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
Manual freshmen Melinda Kemp and Brett Andrews were crowned queen and king of their school’s annual pow-wow.

Dr. George Keenan was presented the Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Southside Exchange Club for establishing and supporting the Southside Boys Club. He led a $625,000 fundraiser to ensure that a new facility would open at 1949 E. Troy Ave., in the fall.

The Beverly Smithey School of Dance presented its annual revue at Manual. Among the performing groups were The Sequinettes, which featured Jane Bass, Melanie Morgan, Michelle Winters, June Taylor, Deitra Winters, Patsy Moriarity, Nancy Fortuna, Gayle Burton, Autumn Vahle, Beth Byrum, Terri Mohr, Elise Roberts and Jody Milto.

40 Years Ago This Week — 1983
John “Jack” Fisher was honored as The Spotlight’s Southsider of the Month for his longtime volunteer work at Concord Center. He and his wife, Phyllis, had five children.

Beech Grove High School senior Gina Lomax won a $750 college scholarship from the Crossroads of America chapter of Professional Secretaries International.

Thomas Cole was appointed director of the United Southside Community Organization.
* * *
The German-American Klub installed its new officers: David Dannemiller; president; William Langhorst, vice president; Betty Krass, secretary; and Fritz Martin, treasurer. New board members were Milt Simmons, Edwin Summeier, Karen Roehling, Dannemiller, Krass and Martin.

30 Years Ago This Week — 1993
Greenwood resident Kyle Young planned to ride his bicycle from Los Angeles to Boston to raise money for Special Olympics Indiana. Young guessed that he could cover 3,400 miles in about seven weeks.

St. Roch eighth-graders Jeremy Himes, Jesse Howelle, Jason Quinto and Rachel Vaughn took first-place honors in their school’s science fair.

The Greenwood Aquatics team placed fourth in the 200-meter medley relay and fifth in the 200 freestyle relay at the Indiana state championships. The squad featured Ben Dexter, Nick Haehl, Ben and Michael Hewitt and Gavin Dougherty. They were coached by Andy McVey, David Martin and Brenda Goins.

​Southport High School junior Brian Cairns, son of Mary and Craig Cairns, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout after completing his service, which provided the American Red Cross with 200 emergency personal care kits.

Behind the efforts of Jimmy Yates, Chris Knox, Justin Jones, Kevin Hammond and A.J. Taylor, Franklin Central’s baseball team defeated North Central to win the Marion County tournament.

Southport’s Clayton Bowie, right,  broke a longtime school record when finishing the 1600-meter run in 4 minutes, 16 seconds at the Marion County meet, where he finished second.
