Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
Prospect chapter of the Order of Eastern Star installed new officers: Kathryn Koenig, worthy matron; Cletus Marley, worthy patron; Mary Emma Ellsworth, associate matron; Kenneth Stewart, associate patron; and Bonnie Stephenson, secretary.

The following quip was published: “A basketball coach at a small college was cornered by the son of a former high school star. ‘My son wants to play in the worst way,’ commented the proud parent. ‘He ought to fit in just fine,’ said the harried coach. ‘That’s the way our team has been playing.’ ”

A three-bedroom house with a two-car garage, a new roof, a garbage disposal and an enclosed porch was listed at $11,500. A three-room apartment on the bus line rented for $55 a month.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967

Garfield Park Junior Music Club members La Vonne Burton, Kathleen Walter, Coleen Powers, Todd Rockstroh, Joyce Moody, Carl Cafouros and Ellen Kay Spencer won awards while competing at a music festival at Indiana University.

Perry Township Schools announced that it would launch a summertime preschool readiness program.

The Top Brass, a newly formed band that featured students from Southport High School, was receiving rave reviews for how it combined drum and guitar rhythm with dance music. The members were Phil Hammond, Jan Moorhead, Rich Rodman, Jim Gran, Jeff Davis and Paul Price.

Manual students Evangeline Baker, Vicki Fritts and Jennifer Graham finished first, second and third, respectively, in the Young America Speaks and Acts contest sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of Ernie Pyle Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1850.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1977
Perry Meridian High School speech team members Ann Daly, John Talley, Gayle Nash, Steve Cortese and Bill Maschmeyer won various events in sectional competition.

Airwoman Deborah L. Murray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl C. Murray and a 1973 graduate of Manual High School, was assigned to Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois after completing basic training.

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1987
Indiana University’s basketball team won the NCAA title by defeating Syracuse 74-73 on Keith Smart’s buzzer-beating shot. Steve Alford hit seven 3-pointers for the Hoosiers and led all scorers with 23 points. The title was the third for coach Bobby Knight.

The Southport PTA was holding its annual plant sale and for the first time was selling tomato seedlings.

Kridan of Indiana, which sold business machines, was celebrating its 15th year in business.

Buck’s Supermarket, 3001 S. Meridian St., was holding a truckload sale on its sandwich meats. Honey loaf was $2.99 a pound; salami, $1.99 a pound; pickle loaf, $2.19 a pound; and bologna, $1.79 a pound.

Elisa Farley, David Ramey, Mike Shea, Tina Gahimer and Sheri Carr served as pages in the Indiana General Assembly.

Patricia Vornholt received a certification of appreciation from Indianapolis Police Chief Michael H. Zunk, Director of Public Safety Michael  E. Beaver and Mayor Stephen Goldsmith for her bravery in defending an unconscious officer who was the victim of a vicious attack.

The winning chorus line at Manual High School’s Redskin Revue featured Bonnie Roe, Denise Durman, Ruth Ellen Oates, Judy Blonder, Regina Maple, Ruthie Smith, Cindy Rogers, Eva Shurman, Janice Bramlett, Peggy Mayfield, Nancy Mussman and Alice Smith.

Perry Meridian High School’s speech team finished fifth in sectional action at IUPUI. Advancing to regional competition were Mark Gunnion, Pam Hill, Dave Schnef, Gayle Nash, Cyndi Kilmer, Steve Cortese, Ann Daly, John Talley, Paul Carlile, Janet Hackenbracht and Bill Maschmeyer.

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997
The Indianapolis Water Co., in cooperation with R.N. Thompson Development Corp., announced plans to convert almost 1,300 acres in the southwest corner of Perry Township into a residential/commercial community. The ground sat atop a major aquifer/well field that Water Co. officials said would become the major source of fresh water for all of Marion County.

Area Boy Scouts, including Matthew Greulich, Warren Booth, David Johnson, Tim Boswell, Kevin Martin, Paul Hauser, Pat Rady and Eric Hohlmann, collected about 5,500 pounds of food for Gleaners Food Bank.

Patrolman Eric J. Eads of the Indianapolis Airport Police Department was graduating from the basic training course at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield. Eads had received more than 480 hours of training in firearms, criminal and traffic law and emergency vehicle operations.

Virginia Cafouros, Pat Rau, Norma Lively and Thelma Wagner, all members of the South Group Women’s Committee of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, were busy preparing for their annual garden tea and card party.

Lilly Endowment donated $10,000 to the Catholic Youth Organization so it could build a cabin for counselors at Camp Rancho Framasa in Nashville, Ind.

Fisher Bros. Home Furnishings, 1315 Shelby St., was holding a truckload sale on stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers and TVs. 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
Merchants National Bank & Trust Co. celebrated the opening of a branch at 3904 S. East St. Participating in the pageantry were the Rev. Gordon Knese, pastor of St. Roch Parish; Frank D. and George M. Bixler, owners of Southern Plaza; George Cafouros, publisher of The Spotlight; and Otto N. Frenzel III, executive vice president of Merchants.

Janie Murphy was crowned queen of Manual High School’s annual ROTC Military Ball. Kay Doty was the runner-up, and Debby Werz finished third in the balloting.

* * *
The grand prize in the Easter coloring contest sponsored by Harrell’s Car Wash, 4130 Madison Ave., was a 7-foot stuffed bunny.

Six lots – about 1 1/2 acres – at the southwest corner of Bradbury Avenue and Hobart Road (3400 east, 2400 south) were advertised for $3,500. 

Studebaker Realty had five homes listed on the Near Southside for less $16,500.

Mayor William Hudnut joined representatives of Eli Lilly and Co. and Manual High School’s 50-Year Club to honor 12 of the school’s juniors and 15 seniors for their academic excellence: juniors: Sheryl Davis, Julie Gilvin, Kristina Gossett, Crystal Grigley, Tina Hafer, Johnnie Hatcher, John Hurt, Kim Madison, James Newsom, Brandson Stone, Mark Surface and Stacy Westra; seniors: Gloria Benedict, Kim Kelly, Angela Tibbits, Brad Walker, Raynel Berry, Earl Clausson, Kim Corbett, Sherry Cox, Craig Flandermeyer, Pamela Ford, Mildred Fox, Rhonda Hawley, Brian Lakstins, Laura Mouser and Calvin Murrell.

The former Manual/Wood High School in the 500 block of South Meridian Street was being renovated to serve as the new corporate headquarters of the Grougher Insurance Group, whose offices were located south of Greenwood.

The squad featured Arnel Aurellano, Derek Black, Julia Blanford, Alyssa Boardman, Matt Jones, Jason Lantz, Stacey Mullen, Ben Stengel, John Trambley, Eben True, Claire Webb, Eric Wu and coaches Steve Robbins, Barbara Hall and Stephanie Dausch.

Powerlifters from Perry Meridian High School placed third among the 16 squads competing at the Ben Davis meet, which featured the bench press, squat and power clean. Team members were Adam Amrine, Matt Webb, Mike Brizendine, Ryan Woolwine, Shaun Corliss, Bob Burton, Josh Cox, Nathan Dagley, Mike Hilligoss and coach Mike Tomey.

Southport heavyweight wrestler Joe Willis won the state championship. He also excelled in football, having been named the school’s Most Valuable Player in 1995.

Home and Garden, 5201 Madison Ave., was celebrating its grand opening with a three-day sale and a raffle for an 18-inch power lawn mower. The owners, Arnold and Vonne Parks, were graduates of Southport High School.

Ann Cecil, Susie Hamilton and Kathy Brady, all under the age of 6, took tap lessons from Helen Charisse.  
* * *
Perry Township Junior High students Lloyd Tucker, Sally Niederauer, Melinda Poffenbeger, Donna Morton, Carolyn Gerking, Becky Harris, Peggy Robinson, Rebecca Keaton and Lonnie Beck were recognized for the work they entered in the Central Indiana Scholarship Art Exhibition.

Cod, perch and haddock were advertised for 35 cents a pound at Buck’s Supermarket, 3001 S. Meridian St., where a dozen large eggs cost 39 cents. Specials at other grocery stores were 2 pounds of bacon for 85 cents, 5 pounds of oranges, 39 cents; a stalk of celery, 19 cents; and 10 pounds of potatoes, 59 cents.

The 2,500-member Indianapolis Baptist Temple moved into its new worship center at 2635 S. East St. The sanctuary could seat 2,000 people, and there was room for an additional 500 in the balcony.

The girls gymnastics team from Perry Meridian High School won its 10th straight sectional title by scoring a school record 102.95 points. The squad featured Becky Burns, Anne Messmer, Robyn Sobieray, Shelly Gritton, Carrie Otto, Kim Swain, assistant coach Debbie Riedel and coach Connie Walters.

Roncalli broke ground for its $3 million expansion project, which included 15 new classrooms, an enlarged library and additional parking.

H. Roger Gale played the role of Elwood P. Dowd in Southport Prologue Players’ dinner theater production of the comedy “Harvey.” Other cast members were Joann Hobson, Cheryl Boyd, Martha Cook, Richard Kivett, Jim Brown and Peter Wood.

The cadet C boys basketball team from St. Mark Grade School won its division title and was a runner-up in the Catholic Youth Organization city tournament. The squad featured Chris Sears, Jarred Maxwell, Jeremy Keith, Kevin Weinman, Robbie Oberting, Matt Drennen, Jacob Kriese, Klay Kondy, Jessie Kindred, Jay Thomas and coaches Rob Thomas and Keith Duncan.
