60 Years Ago This Week - 1959
Many Southsiders were complaining that the Indianapolis Park Board was derelict in its duties of maintaining the tennis courts at Garfield Park.

A gallon of root beer cost 39 cents at Chiliburger, 411 S. West St., where hamburgers were five for $1.

A full-size General Electric refrigerator cost $159 at Verdie Harrell & Son, 4130 Madison Ave.

Marsha Smith, a senior at Southport High and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Smith, was named queen of the Greater Southside Inc.’s 11th annual Strawberry Art Festival.

A dedication ceremony was held at Tallwood Chapel, 5560 Shelby St., where Donald L. Folsey, a graduate of Manual and Butler, served as pastor. 

40 Years Ago This Week - 1979

The Southport Masons were preparing to serve more than 3 tons of fish in what was known as “Indiana’s Largest Fish Fry.”

The fully air-conditioned Twin-Aire Shopping Center, located in the 2900 block of Southeastern Avenue and billed as “The Largest Plaza in Indianapolis Under One Roof,” was celebrating its 22nd anniversary.

Little Shop of Treasures, 3747 S. Meridian St., opened its doors for business. The shop, operated by Lillie Farmer and Emma Long, featured porcelain dolls, music boxes, curio cabinets, antiques, gift items, jewelry and other items.

Southport High School students Chris Lerzak, Breanna Goss and Pat Maines were going to spend six weeks of their summer studying in Mexico.

City-Council Councilor Jeff Cardwell was appointed honorary consul to the Republic of El Salvador, the result of a growing relationship between him and the Central America country.

Center Grove High School’s softball team won its fifth straight state title. Members included (in no particular order) Katherine Belsito, Emily Gwaltney, Amber Elsey, Sarah Franklin, Sarah Alberico, Sydney Miller, Shelby Music, Brittney Shaner, Michelle Brooks, Kelsey Williams, Liz Prince and coach Russ Milligan.

Skinner TV, 2620 Shelby St., repaired record players, stereos and radios and sold used TVs for as little as $25.

Southport High School sophomore Melyssa Rainhardt was unable to defend her state title in the high jump. Her best effort, 5 feet 4 inches, was good for 10th place. She had cleared 5-8 during the regular season, which was among the best in the country.

Roncalli junior basketball player Lyndsy Stahley attended the Nestle Crunch Camp, which was hosted by Detroit Pistons star Grant Hill.

Beech Grove senior Jacob Towe was recognized by the school’s athletic department for earning 15 varsity letters. He planned to attend the University of Indianapolis.

Southport Grade School’s sixth-graders flew to Chicago and back as part of their annual air trip. The students visited the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium and the National Museum of Science and Industry. They enjoyed lunch and dinner at two well-known cafeterias before returning to Indianapolis.
