The performers included Sydenia Ayers, Kathy Brent, Debbie Eva, Patti Burnett, Shelley Bentle, Susie Beaupre, Karen Cannon, Brenda Huckeba, Vicki Holland, Dana Holland, Herbie Clark, Mark Campbell, Terry Thacker, Ron Broughton, Butch Krodel, Gary Okey and Tom Allen.

Dr. Jack Van Impe, a national radio talk show host who claimed to have memorized more than 8,000 verses of the Bible, including the entire New Testament, spoke at the Indianapolis Baptist Temple, 2635 S. East St.

A lawn mower with a 20-inch cut was advertised for $42.84 at G.C. Murphy; a gallon of paint cost $1.99, and boys denim jackets were $3.97.

Mr. and Mrs. Eddie “Dutch” Kriner and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Mitchell attended the NCAA men’s Final Four in St. Louis, where Indiana University, under the tutelage of second-year coach Bobby Knight, took third-place honors. Correspondent Fred Cavinder reported that the first national air show was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1910, one year before the inaugural Indy 500. Among the show’s illustrious guests were Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Jerry used the experience to write about Major League Baseball’s training camp and the exploding cost of housing along the waterfront (small condos cost as much as $1.3 million).

Lutheran High School junior Danielle Sass attended the Molecular Medicine in Action program at Indiana University’s Cancer Research Institute.

Manual’s Jason Thomas was among 61 statewide finalists in the Project XL competition, which awarded more than $40,000 in college scholarships to students who excelled in various forms of artistic expression.

Wesley Bernard, a first-grader who wrestled for St. Barnabas School and the Perry Meridian Wrestling Club, won the state folkstyle bantam division title and upped his record to 36-0.

With the 10-room addition completed at St. Jude Grade School, 5375 McFarland Road, 250 fifth- through eighth-graders moved into the new facility. The students had been attending classes at nearby Chartrand High School.

State Pharmacy, 1650 E. Raymond St., held its “Dollar Stretch Days” sale, during which exceptional values could be found.

A car wash at Mr. Pure, 3501 S. U.S. 31, cost 99 cents with the purchase of 15 gallons of gas, which cost about 30 cents a gallon.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
J.C. Sullivan, the former chauffeur of gangster John Dillinger, spoke at the Indiana Baptist Temple. Sullivan attributed his past behavior to the influence of drugs and alcohol. After being on the run for 17 years, a guilty conscience persuaded him to turn himself in. He later wrote the book “From Crime to Christ.”

Nancy Kernel, a graduate of Southport High School and the daughter Dr. Emil and Mrs. Kernel, was married to Stacey Zaring, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Zaring Jr., at St. John Catholic Church.

Sister Rosemary Haag of Sacred Heart Catholic School was presented the Freedom Foundation Medal for community service.

40 Years Ago This Week — 1983
Manual junior Lisa Egbert, a clarinetist and the daughter of John and Mary Ann Egbert, earned a perfect score for her performance at the Indiana State School Music Association finals.

Manual’s state-ranked No. 2 basketball team avenged a regular-season loss to Perry Meridian by defeating the Falcons 59-58 for the Southport sectional title. The Redskins were coached by Fred Belser and featured Aldray Gibson, Lennel Moore, John Page, Dean Floyd, Danny Spears, Jessie Bingham, Loren Green, Mark Flandermeyer, Keith Richardson, Michael Ray, Chris Riley, Steve Schultz, Ken Harris and Dirk Clark.

The Perry Township Democrat Club elected its officers: Betty Meyer, president; Steve Mappes, vice president; Kate Timberman, recording secretary; Sara Stout, correspondence; and Fred McQueen, treasurer. Carl Hinds, Uday Madiman and Margaret Schnattner were board members.

Kelly Clore retired as the football coach at Perry Meridian. He posted a record of 56-44 over his 10-year career and won the Marion County title in 1973.
