60 Years Ago This Week — 1963
Lake Shore Country Club’s lovely nine-hole golf course at 4301 Carson Ave. was being bulldozed to make way for I-465. Had the interstate been moved 400 feet farther to the east, Louie Annee’s beloved course could have been saved, noted Spotlight Publisher
George Cafouros, who theorized that the grounds would have remained intact had they been on the Northside.

Nationwide Insurance announced that it would provide 50 percent more medical coverage at no extra cost to Hoosiers wearing seat belts when involved in a crash. It was the first such offer in the auto insurance industry.

Donna Brandt, Nancy Brownlee, Carol Stevenson, David Gingrich, Donna Hinds, Priscilla Lawrence, Jacqueline McGathey and Donna McNierney participated in the freshman orientation program at Ball State Teachers College.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
A front-page article was published about the fish fry being hosted by the Perry Township Democrat Club. In addition to all the pertinent information, the names of anyone who had anything to do with the event were listed: Mary Sauer, kitchen chairman; Carl Stamm and Carl Hines, gate attendants; Kathy Baker, who manned the booth of surprises; LaVerne White, ticket sales; Bob Ransom, Forest Handlon and John Jones Jr., activities assistants; Michel Hampton, chairwoman of beverages; and publicists Gert McConahy and Patricia Calhoun.

The Southside’s biggest sale of the year was underway as the merchants of Southern Plaza, 4200 S. U.S. 31, we’re hosting their annual Mardi Gras extravaganza. In addition to sidewalk sales, the event featured free cotton candy, carnival rides, strolling clowns, music, the haystack jamboree (children searched for money in hay; it was a blast), appearances by Sammy Terry and a drawing for a new Mercury Comet.

The Benedictine Center in Beech Grove embarked upon a $5.2 million capital improvement campaign and announced that Mike Shore and Bob Cook would oversee the drive.

James Madden, whose wife, Kitty, was expecting their first child on Labor Day, was installed as grand knight of Monsignor Downey Knights of Columbus. Art Treffy was installed as deputy grand knight and Scott Crossen as chancellor. Other officers were Pat Matthews, Sid Oberting, Harry Gillaspy, Bob Buergler, Lou Buergler, Earl Riggin, Bill Wuertz, Ed Hohmann, Don Mariet, Paul Shepherd and Jack Knarr.

Southport High School set aside a room to display memorabilia for its centennial celebration. Of special interest was a bell believed to have been hung from the first Southport High in 1883 and used until 1911. The bell was then moved to the new high school and saved by Harold C. Gray before the facility was razed in 1961. He subsequently gave it Southport.

Julie Wagner was the new band director at Perry Meridian High School. Originally from Beaver Dam, Wis., she earned her bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

20 Years Ago This Week — 2003
The junior tap dance team of Jordan Knecht, Kristin Blankenship, Kyley Landwerlen, Shelby Reid, Lauren Wickliff, Gretchen Mann, Brandon Comer, Ashley Haseman and Angela Battiato took first-place honors at the Marion County Fair and qualified to compete at the Indiana State Fair.

Blake Kashuba, Emma Hughes and Nicholas Andre from Mary Bryan Elementary earned cash prizes for reading the most books at their school.
* * *
Russ Guffey, a graduate of Greenwood High School and a senior at the University of Indianapolis, was directing UIndy’s production of “State Blood.”

Leon Bates, considered one of America’s leading concert pianists, was booked to perform at Garfield Park’s MacAllister Center.

Peoples Outfitting Furniture Store opened at 2909 S. Meridian St. The company sold maple captain chairs for $9.90 and five-piece dinette sets for $78.80.

Manual High School cheerleaders Beverly Porter, Lynne Barnett, Francis Coffey, Jean Reuter, Jeannie Fletcher, Bob Bauer and Robbie Olds attended the All-American cheerleader camp in Lake Geneva, Wis.

The American Way Restaurant & Gift Shop opened at U.S. 31 and Fry Road in Greenwood. In addition to burgers, fries and shakes, diners could enjoy veal scallopini, chicken aloha and beef burgundy.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
Lisa Wagner, Suzan Koester, Stacy Kratz, Libby and Lauri Butler, Jenny Poynter and Jill Dee, all students at Jean’s Dance Academy, 1054 E. Troy Ave., were rehearsing for their performance at the Mardi Gras celebration at Southern Plaza.

Dr. Paul Pangallo, a graduate of Indiana University School of Dentistry, opened a dental office on Southeastern Avenue.
* * *
Manual High School graduate and IUPUI student Ron Underwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Underwood, was presented the degree of chevalier by the Prospect Masonic Temple.

The Perry Township Democrat Club hosted an old-fashioned rally and fish fry at German Park, 8600 S. Meridian St. Hot dogs and fish sandwiches cost 15 cents and 25 cents, respectively, with side dishes available for 10 cents.

Dr. Karl Kaufman, dean of Butler’s Pharmacy College, was named Pharmacist of the Year by the Indiana Pharmaceutical Association.

The Indianapolis Hiking Club covered some moderate and rough terrain during an outing in Morgan-Monroe State Forest.

In celebrating its grand opening, A.P.D. Auto Parts, 8077 Madison Ave., showcased a Liberator battery that never required water.

40 Years Ago This Week — 1983
Deborah Blight, a senior at Southport High School, was crowned queen during the 26th annual Strawberry-Art Festival at the Southside Community Center, 2941 E. Hanna Ave.

Organizers of the third Indianapolis Shakespeare Festival at Garfield Park expected 15,000 people to attend the free presentations of “Twelfth Night” and “Measure for Measure.” Each play would be staged 10 times over a four-week run.

30 Years Ago This Week — 1993
Michael Rilenge, who suffered from muscular dystrophy, scaled Alaska’s Mount McKinley. Climbing with the aid of a hip and calf brace, Rilenge was the first person known with the disease to ascend the mountain. He and his wife, Brenda, had three children, Nicholas, Timothy and Amanda.

University Heights Christian Church celebrated its 80th anniversary with a special service and a pitch-in meal. Harry Brooks, a former minister, and Mike Duggan were the guest speakers.

Area law enforcement agencies teamed for the first time in conducting sobriety checkpoints.
* * *
St. Barnabas School was recognized as drug-free by U.S. Secretary of State Richard Riley.
* * *
Theatre on the Square’s first production at its new home on Massachusetts Avenue was “Leader of the Pack,” a rock musical celebrating the doo-wop music of the 1960s.

20 Years Ago This Week — 2003

Carl Brunsman, whose son Michael had leukemia, finished a 100-mile bike ride around Lake Tahoe, Nev., during a benefit for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Carl and his wife, Marie, also had a daughter, Christina Mohr.

Chris Fatheree, a 1985 graduate of Perry Meridian and a Navy officer, was assigned to the Situation Room at the White House, where he worked with such notables as Condoleeza Rice, who headed the National Security Council. Fatheree and his wife, Sharon, had two children, Hope and Macallister, and lived 25 miles from the nation’s Capitol.

Church of Acts, founded in 1991 by Pastor Bill Jenkins, celebrated its first service at its new $1 million worship center, 3740 S. Dearborn St.

The Pantry on Epler, 75 E. Epler Ave., celebrated its grand opening. The store featured fried chicken, hot wings, egg rolls and fried crab.

​The Third Generation dance band came out of its short-lived retirement for a special Cocktails & Chemo fundraiser to benefit Joe and Amanda Clark. Joe, who had been diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer, was the son-in-law of the band’s lead singer, Tony Evans.

Ditto on closing shop, but this year George was trying his luck at the roulette tables in Las Vegas.

40 Years Ago This Week — 1983
Indiana University graduate Rob Schwab, who was employed by Tube Processing, joined The Spotlight staff on a part-time basis as a writer and editorial assistant. His first story detailed how Southsider David Stuckey was rescued from Lake Michigan after his sailboat overturned.

Anna Reed, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cooper and a student at Perry Meridian High School, was a contestant in the Miss Teen Indiana pageant.

Top Notch Family Restaurant at U.S. 31 and Stop 11 Road celebrated its grand opening. One breakfast special featured two eggs, home fries, three strips of bacon, toast and coffee for $1.99. Sandwiches were priced from $2.45 to $3.75, and a T-bone steak dinner cost $9.75.

The men’s and women’s national rowing championships were held at Eagle Creek Reservoir.

30 Years Ago This Week — 1993
The Rev. Conan Mitchell, former pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, celebrated his golden jubilee as a Franciscan priest in his hometown parish of our Lady Of the Lake Church in Ashland, Wis. The gala attracted more than 400 well-wishers, some of whom had traveled as far as Colorado, New Mexico and South Carolina.

The Southport High School Alumni Association awarded scholarships to recent graduates, including Heather O’Leary, Amanda Holbrook, Lisa West, Andrew Petty and Mike Ausbrooks. The scholarship committee was led by Jackie Garrett, Steve Harnedy, Karl Glander II and Cindy Bertram.

Betty Klutts offered a calligraphy class at the Southside Art League in Greenwood.

Perry Township teachers Maureen McCune and Debbie Coffing were honored with the Indianapolis Power & Light Co.’s Golden Apple Awards, presented for excellence in using math, science and technology in teaching.
