Claude Kendall, who owned the Key West Shrimp House at 2861 Madison Ave. planned to open a similar restaurant on East 38th Street.

Outgrowing its facility at Shelby Street and Dudley Avenue, Calvary Lutheran Church broke ground for a new worship center and school at 6111 Shelby St.

Facing being sued by the Stream Pollution Control Board for contaminating Little Buck Creek, the town of Southport was asked to design plans for a sanitary sewer system.

Funeral director Daniel O’Riley was elected grand knight of Monsignor Downey Knights of Columbus Council 3660.

Resurrection Lutheran Church confirmed Wendy Harshbarger, Sandy Carey, Gene Medcalf, Cheryl Rayback, Kim Ryan and Debra Schnarr.

John Brown bought Walt’s Market, 2824 Shelby St., and renamed it to reflect his last name. Brown, a grocer for 16 years, and his wife, Judy, had four children, Denise, Robin, Roger and Jeff.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo J. Landwerlen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple had six children, Ralph, Leo J. Jr., John, Shirley Dilger, Mary Lou Jansen and Joyce Wuensch, 27 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

LaMar Updike, who owned Ace Exterminating, offered a 20 percent discount on his services.

Garfield Park Little League hosted a parade, in which the Yankees took first place with their float. The team was represented by Marty Fogleman, Jimmy Mullins, Richard Vester, Michael Henshen, Jeff Parker, Michael Day, Keith Allison, Denny McGlaughlin, Paul Turner, Billy Hughes and coaches Jack Hughes, Danny Sparks and Snowden Hughes.

Melba Kenison and Diana Doyle opened Shear Sun at 3826 Madison Ave. They had 14 years of service in the styling and tanning business and were assisted by Frances Jones.

After losing their first four games, the Edgewood Minor League Tigers rallied to win 12 of their last 13 contests and the league title. Coached by Bill Click, Scott Colglazier and Ed Vargas, the team featured Scott Manifold, Eric Vargas, Vince Schoettle, Ben Merrick, Jared Jesulaitis, Brendon Wagner, Drew Colglazier, Phillip Kemp, Paul Warner, Brent Moore and Aaron Ransdell.

Drummer Brian Slack, son of Susan and Michael Slack and a fourth-grader at Lincoln Elementary School, won the intermediate division of the State PTA Reflections Program, which allowed students to showcase their talents in music, photography, literature and visual arts.

Indianapolis Public Schools named Lisa Ott as its Teacher of the Year. A sixth-grade instructor at McFarland Middle School, she was recognized for invigorating students and staff.

Gary G. Robinson was named principal of Rosa Parks-Edison Elementary School, which was under construction in the Southern Dunes subdivision.

David and Robbin Overbeck opened Emporium Beech Grove. Publisher’s memo: David lost his battle with cancer on July 20, 2014. Robbin recently moved Emporium Beech Grove to 10435 E. Washington St., a mile west of Cumberland and renamed it Emporium 40E. She also owns and operates, Emporium 40 off W. Washington/I-465, Emporium 31 in Greenwood, and Emporium 1101 in Anderson. She is married to Lee Hollis.

Southport High School’s Janet Rusher was crowned queen of the 13th annual Strawberry Art Festival at the Southside Civic Center, 1941 E. Hanna Ave., where ice cream, strawberries and cake were served for 50 cents.

Monsignor Downey Knights of Columbus Council 3660, 511 E. Thompson Road, celebrated its 19th anniversary. The gala was chaired by Paul Schroeder, John Scheib, Dan O’Riley, Joe Kiefer and Lee Mitchell.

Manual graduate Susie Capps received a scholarship from the Paul Harris shoe store.

Carol Blanchard, Paula Moxley, Cathy Sharrer and Linda Shull graduated from the Marion County General Hospital of Nursing.

Central Catholic Grade School held its inaugural kindergarten graduation ceremony. Receiving diplomas from Principal Kathy Tichenor and teacher Veronica Thompson were Mario Alvarez, Silvana Anderson, Keith Biro, Sarah Caruthers, Billy Cosaro, Ashley Cutshaw, Ryan Esselborn, Chris Jordan, Collin Osborne, Stephanie Prodan, Brandon Rivas and Todd Stinson.

St. Mark Parish’s Funfest featured a raffle for a $25,000 savings bond. Tickets cost $2.
* * *
Led by Rudy Wade, Josh Sabik, Tim Bradley and Lamont Hollins, Team Indiana’s Greco/Roman wrestling team finished first in the tournament at Davidson College in North Carolina.

Kevin Leahy was named president and chief executive officer of St. Francis Hospital, replacing Paul Stitzel, who was returning to Cleveland to work in a similar position.

Shideler Harpe, 72, who was recognized for being the oldest attendee at the BMV motorcycle rally in Pittsburgh, commented, “If you can’t outrun them, outlive them.”

A memorial service was held for Lt. Neal Jones, a 1982 graduate of Perry Meridian who was killed while piloting an F-14 Tomcat during a training mission near Reno, Nev. The ceremony was held at Holder Field, where he played high school baseball.

Southport High School senior Neil Weitzel achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor attainable in Scouting. His service project entailed conducting technology classes for fellow classmates.

Roncalli’s Students of the Month for May were Nick Barton, Anna Sander, Jordan Surber, Laura Wagner, Cara Gaughan, Amy Suntum, Christina Frey, Patrick Pitcock, John Dildine, Joe Smagacz, James Baker and Chris Leppert.

The German-American Klub, established in the 1970s at 8602 S. Meridian St., honored its founders, Gary and Eva Cummings, Frank Scholl, Betty Scales, Ginny and Adolf Becker and Lorra Schroader.

Manual senior Amber Spear and Valley Mills Elementary student Sam Ervin won first-place honors at the art contest that celebrated the World Basketball championship at Conseco Fieldhouse. They received their awards from former NBA standout and Olympian Charles Barkley.
