Dan and Kris Feldhake, the father and son team that owned Kridan of Indiana, a retailer of business machines at 824 E. Troy Ave. were featured in a story.

The boys basketball team from Roncalli won its first city title by upsetting Tech 67-63. The squad featured head coach Chuck Weisenbach, assistant coaches Jeff Small and Rob Kratoska, Mike Brunsman, Jim Cissell, Bob Coffman, Nick Stewart, Matt MaGaha, Matt Schroeder, K.J. Bunch, Brian Zywicki, Jeff Mader, Doug Wyciskalia and Dan Lawson.

Olive Branch Christian Church, 101 E. Raymond St., inaugurated its junior deacons, who served the church in various capacities. The honorees were Tim Birtchman, David Brown, Mark Carson, Steve Durham, Terry Ennis, Gary Farley, Phil Herbig, Joe Krause, David and Gary Liggett, John and Steve Link, Mike Mascoe, Bill Mathews, Charles and Tim Miller, John Needler, Doug Polen, Ken Roe, Randy Slaten, Don Stevens, Joe Tomamichel, Jerry Walden and Ron White.

Southside Dodge opened at 3400 S. U.S. 31. The sales staff of Vic Tratner, Lou Grinstead, Ken Payne, Tom Booher, Larry Foster, Phil Jones, Dan Deaton, Mike Bonham and Bob Shelton boasted such specials as a 1962 Catalina for $688; a ‘72 Dart for $788; a ‘78 Mustang for $3,680; and a ‘79 Cutlass Supreme for $5,583.

30 Years Ago This Week – 1993
Linda Brown, who served as the citizen liaison for Indianapolis Power & Light Co., received the company’s Keystone Award for balancing her personal, professional and civic lives. Brown and her husband, James, had two children, Melissa and Jamie.

Pike High School’s basketball team, ranked No. 1 in the state and fifth nationally, defeated Perry Meridian 75-56 before a packed house of 3,000 fans at Perry’s gym. Brandon Ray led the Falcons with 18 points; Austin Montgomery and Justin Petty added 15 and 11, respectively.

Green Acres Restaurant, a storied Greenwood eatery, suffered heavy fire damage. Records indicated that a diner/pub had occupied the site since 1900.

60 Years Ago This Week — 1963
Lights were being installed around the tennis facility at Garfield Park. Players were already looking forward to hitting the courts after sunset on hot summer evenings.

Manual High School held its annual turnabout dance — the Cherry Tree Hop — with Barbara Klopp, Carol Maier, Brenda Spreen, Mary Beth Fill, Dick Hedegard, Roy Lashley, Phil Steele and Paul Switzerland vying for the titles of king and queen.

The $2.9 million Perry East Junior High, 5715 S. Keystone Ave., was dedicated. The school (now Southport Middle) was said to house some of the state’s finest educational facilities.

50 Years Ago This Week — 1973
Rosedale Hills United Methodist Church used Top Value and S&H Green stamps to purchase an artificial kidney machine for Methodist Hospital.

A number of concerned residents met to oppose the relocation of the Indianapolis Stockyards to the 900 block of West Troy Avenue.

The National Bank of Greenwood branch at State Road 135 and County Line Road celebrated its grand opening.

40 Years Ago This Week — 1983
Dr. Alan Gillespie, an obstetrician who graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, joined the medical practice of Drs. Charles Thomas and Lorin Lee.

Perry Township Trustee Martha Burnett and her advisory board enhanced the area’s firefighting capabilities by hiring a new group of volunteers firefighters, who were led by Deputy Chief Clarence Stout, Assistant Chief Bob Ford and President Jeff Mitchell.

The following quip appeared at the end of Publisher Jerry Cosby’s “Coz’ Corner”: A couple were eating at a restaurant when the man suddenly slid under the table. Panic-stricken, the waiter rushed over and said, “Madam, your husband is under the table!” “The hell he is,” she replied. “My husband just walked in the door!”

Perry Meridian’s constitution team finished third in an academic competition. Coached by Rosemarie Kunz, the squad featured David Alford, Matt Gladden, Heidi Baker, Anthony Petcoff, Jill Berger, Ted Snider, Matt Vice, Heather Quigley, Kyle Ritter, Andrea Engel, Trevor Grove, Andy Wilson, Theresa Scherschel, Katherine Graham, Larry Wilson, Shannon Craft, Aurora Zaras and Shelly Mullen.

Dr. Richard Huber was named a Distinguished Senior Alumnus at Indiana Wesleyan University, where he graduated in 1960. He went on to earn master’s and doctorate degrees from Indiana University. Huber and his wife, Diane, a registered nurse, had three children, John, Kristi and Kyle.

The strip mall at Meridian Street and Fairview Place, which housed Designed Lighting, Jack’s Pizza, Liberty Mutual Insurance and other businesses, was partially destroyed during a fire.

The Backstop Diner, a cozy eatery in Beech Grove, celebrated its first anniversary. Owned by the husband-and-wife team of Kevin and Kathy Flaherty, the restaurant offered old-fashioned cooking.
