60 Years Ago This Week - 1962 
Bob Hillan and Margaret Ann Harmening were engaged to be married June 16 at St. Roch Catholic Church.

The South Side Players were rehearsing for their production of “The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come,” a warm tale about an orphan mountain boy during the Civil War. The cast and production staff included Bill and Burnetta Hardcastle, Barbara and Delbert Self, Marguerite Tucker, Pat and Carolyn Kennedy, John Loflin, Karla Davis, Nellie Jones, Zylpha Salyards, Joe Yocum, Edith Lane, Margaret Goldbrecht, Bill Young and Edith Wells.

Under the leadership of Cadet Lt. Col. David Roll, Manual High School’s ROTC drill team was known for its outstanding performances. Founded in 1955, the squad was the largest in the city.

Bill Kirkman celebrated the opening of his Southtown Photo Center, 3333 Madison Ave., by offering black and white photo processing in five hours and color processing in 48 hours.

50 Years Ago This Week - 1972
Bobby Unser won the pole for the 56th running of the Indianapolis 500 with a speed of 195.940 mph, breaking the previous year’s record by 17 mph. A.J. Foyt was seeking to become the first four-time winner while Mario Andretti hoped to duplicate his 1969 victory.

Featuring a 20-foot diving board, Long Acre Park and Pool opened for the season at 4701 Madison Ave.

Baxter YMCA’s men’s volleyball team won the Franklin Parks League tournament. Squad members were John Hunt, Cy Irish, Ed Krull, Jack Parke, Steve Vetesi, John Hefner and Junior Skillman.

Gaylen Fox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Fox, was named drill commander of Western Kentucky University’s ROTC Pershing Rifle Company team.

Rick Cartheuser was installed as master councilor of Southport Chapter of the Order of Demolay, a leadership development organization for young men.

Manual sophomore Vernon Wagner took first-place honors in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at the city track and field meet.

Roncalli crowned Karrie Stahley, daughter of Jerry and Rose Stahley, and Danny Patrick, son of Walter and Cathy Patrick, as its prom queen and king.

Ed Sterns, a Spotlight driver, and fishing buddy Ralph Dee caught 10 crappies for a combined weight of 11.6 pounds during a tournament at Lake Monroe. Their effort was worth $2,241 and a spot in Johnson Reel’s Crappiethon Classic.

Perry Township 4-H welcomed Brad Armstrong and Joy Johnson as staff members.
* * *
Kristi Corsaro, a graduate of Roncalli, was named co-valedictorian at St. Joseph’s College.

Perry Township Schools was experiencing a $1.8 million budget shortfall and dropped some summer courses from its curriculum.

Gasoline cost $1.40 a gallon.

John Raymond Boylan opened Everybody Loves Raymond’s Liquor at 7484 Madison Ave. Boylan had previously been in the produce business for 24 years.

Perry Meridian High School’s baseball team won its fourth Marion County title by defeating Lawrence North 5-1.

The Beech Grove Promoters Club awarded its $500 William Ciriello Scholarship to Tiffany Good, a Beech Grove High School senior who planned to study pharmacology in college. Bill Ciriello, the award’s namesake, co-founded the club in 1953 and was still an active member.

Bennett Leffler and Alexandra Ricardson, prekindergartners at Nativity Grade School, and their classmates celebrated May in typical Indianapolis fashion by holding a “pre-kindy” version of the Indy 500. With colorful cardboard cars and paper-plate wheels, the children raced around a makeshift track.

The Beech Grove Promoters Club awarded its $500 William Ciriello Scholarship to Tiffany Good, a Beech Grove High School senior who planned to study pharmacology in college. Bill Ciriello, the award’s namesake, co-founded the club in 1953 and was still an active member.

The Jolly Dozen Club, whose members included Mesdames James Riley Jr., Frank Wilmoth, Lester Freeman, James Flanagan, James Riley Sr., Imma Fahmer, Marion Tex, Tom Corbin and Art Allstatt, celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The congregation of Center United Methodist Church, 5445 Bluff Road, held a special service to commemorate the building in which it had been worshipping since 1849.  
* * *
Sacred Heart High School named Bill Green as its new athletic director and football coach. He replaced Bob Springer, who left to coach at Washington High.

 50 Years Ago This Week - 1972
The Sequinettes from Beverly Smithey School of Dance performed at Manual. The ensemble featured (in no particular order) Michelle and Deitra Winters, Autumn Vahle, June Bass and Patty Moriarty.

Led by Joe and Paul Tucker, Don Burton and Eric Flanery, the cross-country team from the Southside Boys Club defeated three other teams to win the city title.

Greenwood resident W. Sherrell Alspach, a state policeman, was promoted to the rank of sergeant and assumed the duties of a laboratory technician.

Laurel Lake Shopping Center on County Line Road between U.S. 31 and Madison Avenue opened.

The “Hoosiers Who’s Who” publication named Jim Wells, chairman of the Indiana Alcoholic Beverage Commission, as its Man of the Year.

Ground was broken for St. Francis Hospital’s medical complex at Emerson Avenue and Stop 11 Road.

Richard Pate Jr., Cullin DeFerbrache, Travis Steele, Richard Hemphill Jr. and Dennis Suozzi were sworn in as reserve deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Departmemnt.

20 Years Ago This Week - 2002
Second-graders in Carrie Shappell’s class at Clinton Young Elementary celebrated Earth Day by planting red, white and blue flowers around the school’s flag pole. Lending a hand were (kneeling, from left) Jennifer Zahn, Donovan Poindexter, DaJour Blackmon, Nick McClure; (second row) Zach Sullivan, Tyler Wampler, Shappell, Desiree Allen, JaWana Johnson, Drienna Davis, Amy Moore; (back) Kelly Hines, Heather Johnson, Ashley Hager, Margi Patel, Adam Fidler, Lyle Kendall, Brenden Moore, Robert Ellis, Efrain Tovar and Brandon Butz.

Courtney Landwerlen, daughter of Jim and Terri Landwerlen and a graduate of Center Grove High School and Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., was a dancer in “The Music Man” at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre.

Former Southport High School basketball coach Bill Springer, who led the Cardinals to eight sectional titles, one regional crown and a semistate title, was named to the school’s Wall of Fame.

The cheerleading squad from that year, which featured Gloria (Coverstone) Annee, Jan (Stephenson) Stafford, Bonnie (McKinney) Short, Roberta (Perkins) Freers, Alice (Hughes) Glover, Sherry (Braun) Slemons and Linda (Hansen) Watson, also reunited for the event.
