Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
Bernie Strack, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Strack, entered the theological seminary at Teutopolis, Ill., to complete his training to become a Catholic priest.

Members of the Edgewood Legion Post junior baseball team were Wilbur Dean, Jerry Brown, Paul Shock, Jack Reese, Joe Beal, John Braughn, Tommy Williamson, Harold Skillman, William Hair, Jack Pieper, Bob Gilmore, Norman Weddle, Kenny Otto, manager Harlan “Buck” Houston and coach Elston Beal.

Dr. Paul Hawley, director of the American College of Surgeons, said the love of money – more so than in any other vocation – was the root of all evil in the medical profession.

The Southport Y Little League was hosting a horse show at Southport High School’s football stadium.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
It was reported that the American flag first flew in a land battle Aug. 16, 1977, when troops under Maj. Gen. John Stark fought in the Battle of Bennington in southwestern Vermont during the Revolutionary War.

Patty Friedersdorff, Sue Fuller, Nancy Stewart, Natalie Christy, Joyce Block and Shirley Dutton were installed as the newest pledges of Zeta Eta chapter of Psi Iota Xi.

Mary Reed was named manager of Hendricks Music in Southern Plaza.
* * *
In celebration of its first anniversary, McCap A&W Root Beer, 735 S. Capitol Ave., lowered the price on all of its menu items to 1 cent. 

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1977
Boy Scout Troop 104 members James Brandli and Martin Meyer and Brian Sutherlin from Troop 99 earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest attainable honor in Scouts.

Harrell’s Car Wash, 4130 Madison Ave., reopened after being closed for a week to install new equipment. Longtime employees were Tim Grider, Jimmy Redmon, Bob Snider, Matt Harrell and Homer Koening.

Perry Meridian High School flag corps members Stephanie Rothermel, Janet Gray, Terri Stasik and their teammates attended a summer camp at Indiana University, where Rothermel was honored for her stellar performance. The team received the Most Outstanding Trophy.

Gregory’s Discount Shop, 1044 Virginia Ave., which called itself the Southside’s headquarters for sporty clothes, had marked its blue jeans down to $9.99 and $11.99, a savings of $2 to $4. All jewelry was marked down 20 to 40 percent.

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1987
Gregory L. Wells was named vice president and manager of branch administration of Morris Plan, an affiliate of Firstmark Financial Corp.

The Rev. R. Scott Colglazier was installed as senior minister of Southport Christian Church. He was a graduate of Christian Theological Seminary and had recently served as associate minister of Third Christian Church.

Sisters Elrieda Willett, Christina Lippert, Rosemary Haag, Lillian Baumann, Casimir J. Hurrle, Janet Kuciejczyk, Rose Seyfried, Judith Miniace and Carolyn Strack attended the homecoming picnic of Sacred Heart Parish.

Indianapolis firefighters Sam Burrello and Ralph Poteet were promoted to the rank of captain and lieutenant, respectively.

Forty-one friends of former Southport High School basketball coach Blackie Braden participated in the fifth annual golf outing that honored him while raising funds for scholarships. Participants included Braden, Louie Dampier, Jamie Mabe, Morris Hancock, Gary Gegax, Fritz Hohlt, Steve Christ and Bob Wayman.

A groundbreaking ceremony for Community Church at Murphy’s Landing was held at Harding Street and Bluff Road.

Mary Bryan Elementary School’s 1,100-member PTA was named the best in Indiana.
* * *
State Sen. Patricia Miller was appointed to serve as chairman of the Central State Advisory Committee. She was charged with acting upon a report from Gov. Frank O’Bannon on the proposed sale or lease of the property.

Weigman Greenhouse, 950 W. Hanna Ave., had marked down its bedding plants and potted geraniums by 25 percent.
* * *
Adrian Orchards, 500 W. Epler Ave., opened for the season and was advertising its yellow cling peaches from Mississippi and frozen cider.

Amy Frey, a recent graduate of Perry Meridian and the daughter of Eric and Beverly Frey, was named to the Indiana All-Star softball team. Frey pitched 480 innings while striking out 365 batters during her high school career.

Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
Bill Maffett celebrated the grand opening of his Edgewood Standard Service, 5544 Madison Ave., where customers were treated to soft drinks and ladies were given roses.

Children’s tennis shoes were on sale for $1.79 a pair at G.C. Murphy in Fountain Square; a pound of fudge cost 23 cents and women’s cotton dresses were $1.44.
* * *
Tommy Trees, who attended Edgewood Grade School, won a bicycle at the fish fry hosted by the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department.
* * *
The Three Musketeers, touted as the hottest band in town, performed every Friday and Saturday night at Crossroads Tavern, 2179 Bluff Road.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967

Hook’s Drug Store employees Harry F. Layne, Keith D. Johns, Bertha Passwater and Marvin B. Lewallen were recognized for their community service.

The roster of the Anchorettes softball team included Linda Burrello, Betty Nissley, Rosie Allen, Diana Stevens, Phyllis Fisher, Elsie Wolf and Sue Tiffany.

Renovation work on Luke Billman’s Oasis Tavern, 5569 Madison Ave., was completed.

Volley’s Shell Service, 4840 S. Meridian St., was selling four tires for the price of three. 

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1977

The Kiwanis Club of South Indianapolis presented scholarships to Tony Schroom of Perry Meridian High School and Paula Hershey and Deborah Farley of Southport so they could attend the Indiana State Police/Kiwanis International Career Camp.

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra was going to perform a free concert at Southern Plaza, 4200 S. East St.
* * *
Garfield Park was hosting a horseshoe tournament.
* * *
Karen K. Meyer was named principal of Calvary Lutheran School, 6111 Shelby St., where she had taught for eight years. In addition to her new responsibilities, she would continue to teach.

A fishing contest was held every weekend at Dick’s Lake, I-74 at the London Road exit, where $50 was awarded to the angler who caught the biggest fish.

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1987
Pastor Tom Madon and the congregation of Community Church of Greenwood celebrated the groundbreaking of its new building, which would feature a sanctuary, classrooms, a nursery, a kitchen and offices.

JC Penny in Southern Plaza was closing and had marked down all merchandise by 20 percent.
* * *
Stout’s Florist, 5245 Bluff Road, was a holding sale on its flats: one for $5, three for $10.
* * *
Hafer Bros. Gardens, 2856 S. Meridian St., had marked down its 25-pound bags of potting soil to $1.95, a savings of $1.

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997

Residents of southwest Perry Township attended a forum to voice their concerns to Indianapolis Water Co. officials about the diminishing quality of their well water. Some residents argued that the IWC’s new pumping station at 3425 W. Southport Road was causing the area’s water level to drop.

Perry Meridian High and St. Jude Grade School received awards from Parent Power and Ameritech for their use of TeleParent, a voice mail project that allowed parents ready access to teachers. Perry Meridian teacher Julie Wagner and Assistant Principal Joan Ellis were seen accepting the award.

Megan Duckworth, a fifth-grader at Mary Bryan Elementary, was the school’s Student of the Year. She had a 3.9 GPA and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Duckworth.

Golden wedding anniversary notices were published for Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. DeLong, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Landwerlen, Mr. and Mrs. Karl A. Nitsch and Mr. and Mrs. James E. Roberts.

Weekly specials at the Save•A•Lot grocery store at 3819 S. East St. included 10 pounds of chicken leg quarters for $3.70 and beef cube steak for $1.97 a pound.

Indianapolis Mayor Philip Bayt and City-County Councilor Christian Emhardt were the guests of honor when Garfield Y Little League opened its third season.

Linda K. Ellis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Ellis, was married to Robert Beals, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Beals, at St. Mark Lutheran Church.

Indiana Central College broke ground on a 4,200-seat gymnasium. The gym, which would include wrestling, handball and physical therapy rooms, was expected to cost $500,000.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
Dwight D. Whitis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay Whitis, was promoted to a specialist four in Vietnam, where he was assigned to the 73rd Aviation Company.

Three dozen eggs cost $1; milk was 85 cents a gallon; and ground beef was 49 cents a pound.

Sandra K. Fitzpatrick completed training to become a stewardess for Lake Central Airlines.

Dwight K. Allen was admitted to David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tenn.

Dr. Philip Borst, a veterinarian and president of the Southport Jaycees, presented a check for $300 on behalf of the Jaycees to Betty Sexton, director of the Fountain Square Senior Citizens Center.

William A. Mennel received the Coast Guard’s Achievement Medal for Superior Performance of Duty while serving in the Saipan Marianas Islands.

St. Francis Hospital presented its Family Spirt Award to LeAnne Robinson, who was a physical therapist.

Perry Township’s 4-H Rabbit Club elected its new officers: Amy Royalty, president; Raymond Gephart, vice president; Scott Chevalier, treasurer; Steph Chmielewski, secretary; and Steve Krohne, reporter.

Seventeen year-old Mark Heeringa of Southport High School earned three summer trips through his involvement with 4-H.

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997
Spotlight Publisher/Editor Jerry Cosby and yours truly went on a refueling mission out of Grissom Air Reserve Base. We flew at 350 mph in a KC-135 Stratotanker while refueling a B-52 bomber over Tennessee. The tanker, which was about 25 feet from the bomber, could deliver more than 1,000 gallons of fuel per minute.

Southport High named Richard Theil as its newest addition to the Wall of Fame, an honor that recognized contributions to sports by the school’s former athletes or coaches.
* * *
Vanessa Scott, my 7-year-old niece, was quoted in my “Mohr ... or Less” column as saying, “Salad has a funny taste, but Pepsi, french fries and hot fudge sundaes are absolutely delicious.”

Don Walter, a 34-year educator, was retiring from Clinton Young Elementary after 24 years of service to Perry Township Schools.
* * *
Samantha’s Hair Care, owned by Samantha Fitzgerald and located at 7210 Madison Ave., was celebrating its grand opening.

The Indy Southside Falcons 11 and under basketball team won the Ben Davis Regional championship and finished sixth in the state tournament. The squad featured Ashley Werner, Jannell Pasteur, Megan Raines, Carly Meeks, Heather Burleson, DeAnna Pflum, Desi Spears, Katy Ferguson, Laura Gaybrick, Kelsey Garganus, Elizabeth Stevens, Colleen Harrington and coach Mike Armstrong.
