Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1956
Monsignor Downey Knights of Columbus Council 3660 received a favorable vote from the Indianapolis Zoning Board to build a lodge home at 511 E. Thompson Road.

St. Mark Catholic Church was hosting a smorgasbord. The meal, which cost $1.25 per adult, 65 cents per child, included prime rib, ham and turkey.

Manual High School’s PTA raised $3,066 at its powwow. 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1966
Blaine Miller, president of Excelsior Laundry and Cleaners, opened his sixth shop in Indianapolis. The new facility was located at 5000 Madison Ave.

Manual High School’s PTA installed John Garrity as president for the upcoming year. Other officers were Mrs. Raymond Cain, first vice president; Mrs. Donald Boyd, second vice; Mrs. William Lloyd, recording secretary; Mrs. John Sterrett, corresponding secretary; and Nancy Chapman, treasurer.

Hanna Avenue was going to be widened to four lanes from Madison to Carson avenues for an estimated cost of $550,000.

Hawkins Professional Pharmacy, 234 E. Southern Ave., was celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Pete and Maryann Steffey, owners of the popular Pete Steffey’s Restaurant at U.S. 31 and Smith Valley Road in Greenwood, were recarpeting their eatery’s main dining room.

The Paul Reveres was a group of concerned citizens whose mission was to fight for injustices around the Southside.

Sandy Brown and Tom Finchum were crowned queen and king of Manual High School’s powwow. Their court members were Willie Caudle, Robin Henderson, Madonna Lamperski, Leon Broughton, Rhonda Frentress and Warren Roberts.

Johnny Rutherford won the pole for the 60th running of the Indianapolis 500. Gordon Johncock was in the middle of the first row and Tom Sneva was on the outside.

Midge Kissling, a graduate of Southport High and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph R. Kissling, was exhibiting her artwork at Depauw University, where she just graduated. 
  
Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1986
Citing the third serious car wreck at Meridian Street and Sumner Avenue, adjacent to St. Roch School, Spotlight Editor Jerry L. Cosby wrote an editorial calling for motorists to slow down before someone was seriously injured.

Miss America Susan Akin, Lisa Hartman, James Farentino, David Hasselhoff, Jim Varney and Chuck Yeager were among the celebrities planning to attend the 500 Festival Parade.

Mary Kay Helling, a 1973 graduate of Southport High School and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Kastner, was among the seven faculty members at South Dakota State University named Teacher of the Year.

Manual High School student Danny Madison Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Madison, was named an Academic All-American by the National Secondary Education Council. 
  
Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1996
Proposed improvements to County Line Road from Sherman Drive to Madison Avenue were on hold because the Johnson County commissioners were wrestling with the problem of funding their portion of the project.

Manual science teacher David Brunsting was named an Apple Distinguished Educator.   
* * *
George Marshall, a 1955 graduate of Southport, was named to the school’s Wall of Fame, an honor reserved for alumni who have made significant contributions to sports.

Boasting 4.0 GPAs, Melissa Steinke and Jennifer Vance were named co-valedictorians at Lutheran High; Matthew Oates was the salutatorian.

Southport’s reserve softball team won the Ben Davis Invitational. Members were Andrea Alte, Erin Reardon, Kristin Roll, Amber Halton, Melissa Setser, Angie Dobbs, Nicole Perry, Mandy Pinnix, Stephanie Kelley, Tyler Crider, Heather Harris, Michelle Frommeyer, Nikki Hurrle, Katie Campbell, Tina Standeford, Shannon Roberts, Amy Macy and coach Dennis Dood.

The Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department was hosting its annual fish fry.

Circle Furniture Co., 938 Virginia Ave., advertised a never-before-seen price of $149.95 for a 21-inch black-and-white TV. The TV featured an optic glare shield, which trapped out annoying light reflected from lamps and windows. 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1966
Henry’s Hamburgers, 3545 S. East St., was celebrating its fifth anniversary by selling hamburgers for 10 cents and fish sandwiches for 29 cents.

Debbie Welsh, David H. Moore and Ronald Hawkins took first-, second- and third-place honors, respectively, in the poster contest at IPS Raymond L. Brandes School 65.

G.C. Murphy’s in Fountain Square announced that it would begin to accept charge cards issued by American Fletcher National Bank.

Murphy’s was sponsoring a car in the Indianapolis 500 for Roger McCluskey.

Two pairs of children’s canvas oxfords or hi-tops cost $3 at Shoe World in Fountain Square.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1976
Kelly Enright, an eighth-grader at Keystone Middle School, qualified for the U.S. Gymnastics Federation’s junior nationals in Oregon by placing first in the floor exercise, vault, balance beam and all-around at the state meet in Munster.

Richard W. Wall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Wall, was graduating from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and had accepted a position with U.S. Steel in Gary, Ind.

Kim Cromley, Pam Willis, Juli Card, Tina Henderson and Amy Corsaro, students at Experience and Dance Studio, 2604 Madison Ave., were performing in a recital at Marian College.  
  
Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1986
Indianapolis Deputy Chief of Police Paul Annee was going to address concerns about the cruising problem along U.S. 31 and Madison Avenue when speaking to the Southside Community Advisory Council. 

Dr. Blanche Penrod received Southport High School’s Outstanding Alumnus Award. Penrod graduated in 1922 and served the school 43 years as a teacher and dean. She retired in 1969 after instructing biology and chairing the science department.

Eli Lilly and Co. employees Wayne G. Kooms, Norma J. Phillips, Daniel G. Swisher, Paul E. Wright, Monte G. Crumley, Frances A. Lovingood, Jacquelyn T. Massey, James M. Mockford, Robert E. Taylor, Dr. Gerald W. Wallace, Key-May Chou, David R. Bennett, Jack T. Harman, William J. Perkins, Leonard Porter, John R. Shea and Delores Wilson were honored for 25 or more years of service.

Lincoln Elementary’s fifth-grade was staging “Return to Oz,” which starred Jay Robinson, Loren Hayes, Larry Wilson, Cory Delp, Maisah Williams, Sarah Wilson, A.J. Wilkerson, Heather Newport and Katherine Graham.  

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1996
Scott Brayton won the pole for the 80th running of the Indianapolis 500 with a four-lap speed of 233.718. Tony Stewart (233.100) was in the middle of the front row, and Davy Jones (232.882) was on the outside. Arie Luyendyk set a track record of 236.986, but his run was on the second day of qualifications, placing him on the outside of Row 7.

April Herman, a freshman at Southport and the daughter of William and Marcia Herman, was crowned champion in the Marion County 4-H speech and demonstration contest for her presentation on motorcycle safety.

St. Barnabas’ fifth- and sixth-grade C volleyball team completed its season by winning the consolation game in the Catholic Youth Organization tournament. The squad featured Breanna Anderson, Carley Meek, Adrienne Campbell, Katie Denny, Colleen Merkel, Erin Jardina, Caitlin Rose and Collen Rose Harrington, Lindsey Heiob, Jessica Milano, Janelle Pasteur, assistant coach Jennifer Pasteur and coaches Patricia Jane Harrington and Ed Pasteur.

Southport Lumber Co., 7000 Madison Ave., was holding a clearance sale on its paint. All quarts of enamel had been marked down to 80 cents; all gallons were $2.49.

Teachers employed by Indianapolis Public Schools received raises between $250 and $300 for the upcoming year. The maximum salary for a teacher with a bachelor’s degree was $5,800, $6,250 for a master’s.

The Men’s Club of St. Mark Catholic Church was serving a pancake and sausage breakfast to mothers and their daughters.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1966
Three weeks of swimming lessons cost $6 at Southport High School.

J.C. Brill Appliances was holding a huge tent sale at Southern Plaza. “We have got the old pencil out and sharpened it up to reduce our prices before taking the tent down,” owner Jim Brill said.

Reconditioned sewing machines were featured for $4.95 during a one-day sale at Singer Sewer Center at Southern Plaza.

Safeway Quality Foods, 1201 Prospect St., advertised myriad specials, including a dozen eggs for 49 cents; a pound of bacon, 69 cents; rib steak, 79 cents a pound; six cans of pork and beans, $1; and 10 pounds of potatoes, 69 cents.
 
Forty Years Ago This Week – 1976
A large headline proclaiming “Churchill Exonerated” told the story how former Police Chief Winston Churchill was not guilty of the allegations levied against him by The Indianapolis Star and its managing editor, Bob Early.

Holy Name Grade School was presenting “Musicale ’76,” a bicentennial celebration whose opening number featured a fife and drum rendition of “Yankee Doodle Dandy.”

Annmarie Huber, a senior at Perry Meridian and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Huber, was installed as worthy adviser of Southport Assembly No. 10 Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Other officers were Susie Cartheuser, worthy associate adviser; Linda Smith, charity; and Phyllis Ford, hope.

Featuring a new amusement arcade, Longacre Park and Pool, 4600 block of Madison Avenue, was opening for its 41st season. The pool was one of the largest in the United States. 
  
Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1986
Lifetime Southsider Nelli Fox celebrated her 100th birthday. She was the mother of 11 children, three of whom were living, and had 29 grandchildren, 51-great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

Indiana Central University was going to award honorary doctoral degrees to William A. Dyer Jr., Alexander S. Carroll, the Rev. Marcus Blaising, Eloise H. Banks and Harriet H. Capehart.

Don Shine’s joke about the lady married four times was printed in Jerry Cosby’s “Coz’ Corner ... .” “The first time was to a banker, the second to a movie producer, the third to a hair dresser and the fourth to a mortician. ‘It was one for the money, two for the show, three to make ready and four to go,’ ” Shine said.

Pauline Ulrey, blinded at age 19 when struck by lightning, visited Lincoln Elementary and explained to the students how she was able to live a normal life with the help of her leader dog, Heidi.

Retiring Manual teacher, coach and athletic director Ray Schultz was honored as the school’s Alumnus of the Year. Offering words of praise about the revered mentor were Roger Heldman, Larry Morwick, Ray Baker, Mark Bowell, Dennis Jackson and Harold “Gene” Bennett.

Southport High School teacher Pat O’Connor was named to carry the Olympic flame about 1 kilometer through Indianapolis as it made its way to the Summer Games in Atlanta.

Erin Cosby received $125 and a trophy for being recognized as one of Union Federal Savings Bank’s top branch associates.

Roncalli’s math team took first-place honors in the mathematics competition of the Hoosier Academic Super Bowl. The squad featured Theresa Hellman, Doug Robinson, Jeff Frank, Ben Taylor, Sean Griffin and coach Elaine Jerrell.

Lincoln Elementary fifth-graders Brandon Taylor, Zackery Siler, Jason Shockley, Jessica Finchum, Maggie Shirey, Jessica Fishburn, Jordan Brown, Brian Salisbury, Hien Nguyen and Stephanie Johnson were honored for the essays they submitted to the Daughters of the American Revolution’s history essay contest.

Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1956
Cecil Hurt Mortuary won the St. Catherine Bowling League with a record of 64-35, one game better than Thoman Shoe Store’s 63-36 mark. Darko Cleaners and Schuster Coal Co. tied for third with records of 54-45.

The Rainbow Garden Club of Southport was busy preparing for its annual flower show, which was being coordinated by Mrs. Hugh Thompson.

The Bluff Avenue School PTA hosted a benefit to raise funds for an outdoor basketball court. 
* * *
Edwin Penn, the 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Penn, presented a piano recital at Indiana Central College. A nine-year piano player, Penn had won many contests.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1966
Ross Patronsky, a junior at Southport, and David Vornehm, a freshman at Perry Central Junior High, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor attainable in Scouting.

Clad in mermaid attire, Southport students Julie Ake, Cara White, Linda Copenhaver and Pam Stevens were rehearsing for the school’s annual Dolphinette Water Show.

The Monsignor James M. Downey Catholic Youth Organization Athletic Field at East Raymond and Perkins streets was dedicated.

Latin School of Indianapolis, 520 Stevens St., announced plans to add a third floor to its facility. The project, which included three classrooms and a science lab, was estimated to cost $144,000

Ron McBride, president of Manual’s senior class, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Lilly Endowment Foundation. 

 Forty Years Ago This Week – 1976
A small group of students and teachers from Southport High School were going to spend July in Hawaii to study marine biology and oceanography. Seen going over the details of their trip were Teresa Zerminski, Lois Meyer, Jennifer Sims, Cindy Meyer, Ann Puckett, Dave Thompson, David Miller and Beverly Byers.

Judy Foster and her sons, Brad and John, opened The Filling Station at 5140 Madison Ave., where patrons could enjoy a variety of sandwiches and libations.

State Pharmacy and Lou’s Liquors, both at the corner of State Street and Raymond Avenue, offered delivery service from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays.

 Girl Scouts Amy Davis, Laurie Byers and Lana Biggs were pictured making soap, a skill they would demonstrate at an upcoming colonial fair.    
  
Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1986
Capable of cruising at 1,490 mph, British Airways Concorde landed at Indianapolis International Airport to much fanfare, which included a performance by the Gordon 500 Pipers.

Jeanette Strack, a graduate of Southport High and the daughter of Robert and Margaret Strack, was a member of the Indiana University School of Law team at Indianapolis, which finished third in the National Moot Court competitions in Dayton, Ohio.

Men’s and ladies two-piece suits were cleaned for $3.49 at 40 Minute Cleaners, 7017 Madison Ave.

Jim Hohlt was named head basketball coach at Perry Meridian High School after serving as an assistant for 13 years. A three-sport athlete at Southport High, he went on to play basketball for coach Tony Hinkle at Butler.

Spotlight special correspondent Fred D. Cavinder wrote the first installment of his three-part series about the often maligned town of Homecroft. He opened the series by writing, “Saying that Homecroft has faced a little controversy in the past decade is like saying a woman is a wee bit pregnant.”

In the wake of tornadoes that barrelled through Marion and Johnson counties, federal disaster loans were available to homeowners.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Frappier, parents of Joe Frappier, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
