| 60 Years Ago This Week – 1959 Indianapolis’ first baby born in the new year was a Southsider, and she quickly became famous as her picture was published in almost every newspaper in town. Karen S. Price, daughter of Perry and Letha Price, arrived at 12:07 a.m. New Year’s Day. * * * The Indianapolis Civic Orchestra was going to present its first concert of the season at the new Academic Hall Auditorium at Indiana Central College. * * * G.C. Murphy in Fountain Square boasted that it featured the largest selection of merchandise of any store in Greater Indianapolis. 50 Years Ago This Week – 1969 Donald E. Pierce, the new Standard Oil dealer at Morris and South East streets, received a diploma from Standard for completing its most comprehensive training course in service station operations. * * * G.C. Murphy was holding a one-day special on color TV antennas as they were marked down from $29.95 to $12.99. “No rotor motor (whatever that means) is necessary,” assistant manager Jack Franklin said. * * * John and Betty Dobkins opened Tote-A-Poke Fried Chicken in Southgreen Plaza, 711 E. Thompson Road. 40 Years Ago This Week – 1979 The Union Federal branch on U.S. 31 in Greenwood celebrated its grand opening. * * * Condominium Realty Corp. announced the development of a $4 million concept of cluster homes – Cielo Vista – which would be an integral part of the Valle Vista community on Main Street in Greenwood. 30 Years Ago This Week – 1989 Manual’s Mike Helm hit a buzzerbeating basket to send the RedskinsPerry Meridian basketball game into overtime. Manual went on to win 68-55. * * * Wrecking crews were dismantling the old William McKinley School 39, 801 S. State St., as an $8.5 million facility had opened two blocks north at 1733 E. Spann Ave. * * * Mayor William Hudnut launched an “Angle Fund” to help provide emergency assistance to families without heat. * * * Becki J. Smith, an accounting major at the University of Indianapolis, was awarded a scholarship from Stewart & Loyd for her academic achievements. * * * A brand-new, loaded Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 listed for $13,488. 20 Years Ago This Week – 1999 The driver of a sedan found himself staring at the sky following a dipsy-doodle on I-465 just east of U.S. 31. Jo Ann King led the ladies with a 687. * * * A family of four could eat for $7 at Kentucky Fried Chicken, where the starting pay was $4 an hour ... if you had some experience. 20 Years Ago This Week – 1999 The roof of Value City Department Store on U.S. 31 collapsed under the weight of ice and snow.
