60 Years Ago This Week - 1959
High school contestants for the title of Miss Madison Avenue were Marilyn Bennett, Bonnie Brumfield, Carolyn Goodnight and Janis Small.

50 Years Ago This Week - 1969
Southport Baptist Church, 2901 E. Banta Road, was hosting a sacred music workshop.

The A&P supermarket at 1337 Shelby St. celebrated the completion of its remodeling project. Specials included sirloin and T-bone steak for $1.19 and $1.39 pound, respectively; six 16-ounce bottles of RC Cola, 59 cents; a dozen eggs, 49 cents; and bananas, 10 cents a pound.

American Fletcher National Bank opened a drive-up window at its branch in the 7000 block of Madison Avenue. The 6-by-6 foot building was equipped with heating, air-conditioning, lights, a telephone, an alarm system and bullet-resistant glass and walls.

At his left was Ann Reeves, who bought $100 worth of tickets. Also seen are Aretta Elsea, Vicky Howard, Michelle Knight, Donna Daniel, Austin Wilson and Frank Rush.

Mary Kay Baker, a physical education instructor at RISE Learning Center, was named Indiana’s Teacher of the Year by State Superintendent of Education H. Dean Evans. Baker is seen with her son, Brian, husband Don and son Andy.

Southport senior drum majorette Jenny Nicholas directed the school’s band during her last football game as a marching Cardinal.

Perry Township firefighters Andy Borton, Brett Gildersleeve, David Redmond, Chris Good and Jeff Shatto shared fire safety information with second-graders at Clinton Young Elementary School.

Southport Heights Christian Church, 7154 McFarland Road, celebrated its 50th anniversary with founding minister Gene Carlson leading the service.

St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, founded in 1842 and located at the corner of New Jersey and McCarthy streets, was undergoing a $28,000 renovation.

In its first year of operations at it new facility, the Indianapolis Zoo boasted a membership of 74,000 patrons, second only to the San Diego Zoo.

Southport High School’s cheerleaders were high-spirited after a festive homecoming parade marshalled by former Indiana Pacers coach Bobby “Slick” Leonard. The football game that followed against Pike had its high points - like when Cardinal kicker Jason Winter booted a school record 46-yard field goal - but Southport lost 32-10.

Roncalli’s girls golf team competed in the state finals at The Legends Golf Course in Franklin.

Louie and Nancy Annee celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were the parents of Louie, Joseph, Debbie, Dan, Tim, Kevin, Jenny and Aimee and had 29 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
