Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1956 
Dr. Harry Pandolfo, a general practitioner, was elected president of the Indianapolis Medical Society. He and his wife and their 12-year-old  daughter, Kathy, resided at 529 Markwood Ave.

Santa Claus was going to visit the Oriental Theatre, 1105 S. Meridian St., where children could attend a double feature of Abbott and Costello for free.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Department was going to set up special road blocks to check for drunken drivers.
* * *
The Concord Center, 17 W. Morris St., was planning a variety of Christmas and new year’s activities for children and adults. 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1966
Indiana Central College President I. Lynd Esch was elected president of University Heights Hospital’s board of directors. Wallace Sims was named president, Dr. John Butler, vice president, and Wayne Etter, treasurer.

Goodwill Stores advertised dolls for 25 cents to $5; women’s winter coats, $2.49 and up; dresses, 39 cents to $3.49; and men’s topcoats, $5.49 and up.

Deborah L. Murray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Murray and a 1973 graduate of Manual High, enlisted in the Air Force.

Last-minute Christmas specials at G.C. Murphy in Fountain Square included hamsters for $1.66, electric toasters and irons, $8.86; blankets, $5.77, Evel Knievel toys, $11.88; a Mr. Music Drum Set, $5.44; and a Tonka dump truck, $8.88.

G.C. Murphy employees Debra Humphreys, Rosie Suiters, Teresa Hillen, Wilma Parks, Toni Delatore, Corky Suiters, Hope Schaefer, Mary York, Bev and Terry Oliger and Brenda Gooley sang Christmas carols to patients at Indianapolis’ veterans hospitals.
 
Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1986
Southport High School announced the cast for its production of “Dolly.” The leading roles were being played by Tara King (Dolly) and Curtis Clingerman (Horace, her love interest). Also in the play were Rich Biggers, Hedy Atkins-Harris, Brent Williams, Sheila Brewer, Joe Clemans, Shellie Miller, Kirsten Ableson, Mandy Potter, Gus Feltes, Paul Smith and Scott Epperson.

Sunchasers Travel Club advertised three-night and four-day getaways to Acupulco, Cancun and Puerto Vallarata for $288, which included deluxe accommodations and round-trip air for two from Indianapolis.

Christmas wreaths, centerpieces and ornaments at Lil’ a This, Lil’ a That, 3130 E. Thompson Road, were marked down 75 percent.

Mike Houston and Mike Rodriquez, who trained at Ardizzone & Nalley Gym, won the tall and medium class, respectively, of the Mr. Hoosier State Bodybuilding a in Anderson. Rodriquez won the overall title.

Jo Duncan and her granddaughter, Rachel Funk, were among the students, parents and grandparents who enjoyed a candlelight luncheon at Burkhart Elementary School.

St. Barnabas Catholic School’s fifth- and sixth-grade B girls basketball team won the Catholic Youth Organization’s city tournament. The squad consisted of Loye Kegley, Katelin Eckert, Carley Meek, Kristin Heath, Erin Jardina, Kelsey Gurganus, Kari Andres and coaches Kevin Meek and Allison Gurganus.

The powerlifting team from Ardizzone & Nalley Gym won the Indiana State and Midwest Regional championship for the second year in a row. The squad featured Roger and Robin Heldman, Dick Nalley and sons Richie and Marcus, Jeff Piercefield, Eddie Miller, Steve Hadley, Shawn O’Kelley, Greg Hillan, Carlos and Armondo Martinez, Vince Hengen, Norm Wade, Mike “Doc” Strausburg, Dave Baldwin, Chris Byren, Kevin Hazlett, Tim Dant, Allan Glass, Marcus Brown, Keith Van Atta and Scott Poore.

The following Manual students made straight A’s for the second six-week grading period: Miriam Scharfe, Sharon Basey, Phyllis Brehob, Judy Neale, David Brink, Charlotte Carter, Mary Iannuzi, Ann Norcross, Janalene Powel, Trudie Sheridan, Mike Steedham, Janet Wurz, Judy Ziegler, Vivian Gill, Evalyn Lowe, Doris Shock, Carolyn Taylor and Bob Napper.

Nancy L. Kortepeter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl L. Kortepeter and a student at Earlham College, was studying abroad at the University of Paris.

Bob Wilkins opened a Sunoco gas station at 2201 S. Sherman Drive and boasted, “I’ll service all of my patrons’ cars just like I would my own.” 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1966

The Indiana Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution named Manual senior Linda Ellis as its Good Citizen of the Year. Ellis was the editor of the school’s newpaper, president of Quill and Scroll and a choir member.

ABC News President Elmer Lower and anchor Peter Jennings were the guest speakers during a luncheon at Eli Lilly and Co.

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1986
University of Indianapolis senior and Roncalli graduate Susie Kuntz was named to the Great Lakes Valley All-Conference volleyball team for the second consecutive year. Dan Jester, a tight end for UIndy’s football squad, was named to Kodak’s All-American team.

Plans for a new IPS elementary school to replace Schools 31 and 35 were unveiled. The facility would face Lincoln and Minnesota streets at Kennington Street, just west of East Street. Construction on the $8 million building was expected to begin in early 1987

Doug DeJong, Jennifer Hall, Debbie Snider, Kevin Stender, Angie Dill and Robert Hillard, all members of the Perry Township Swimming Association, turned in fine performances during a meet in West Lafayette.

Bill Kuntz was retiring as Roncalli’s football coach so he could enter private business. He compiled a record of 64-18 over seven years and led the Rebels to the Class 3A title in 1985.

Lisa Dillman, who led Perry Meridian’s volleyball team to a 34-2 record and a semistate championship, was named to a variety of All-State teams and was presented with the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s Mental Attitude Award.

Perry Senior Citizens hosted a luncheon to recognize its volunteers. The honorees included D. Hyndman, A. Padgett, C. and B. Nordhoff, D. Haynes, C. Jordan, R. Kammerling, E. Reich, R. Tuhrmann, B. Bennett and P. Morris.

Willy Hibner, son of Marie and John Hibner and a first-grader at St. Mark Catholic School, took third-place honors in the haunted house coloring contest sponsored by The Indianapolis Children’s Museum.

Maria Pepin placed first in Roncalli’s science fair. Other top achievers included Katie Bell, David Ernst, Chris Shannon, Jason Schackelford, Michael Boldt, Alex Menze, Michael Meehan and John Hollowell.

Dinner Bell Markets, 2824 Shelby St., led the state in lottery sales. The store’s motto was, “Anybody can sell you a lottery ticket, but at Dinner Bell ... we sell winners.”

Roncalli’s J’nai LeFevre, Julie Groves and Nicholle Duncan were named to the Indiana All-State volleyball team.

Ochiltree Cleaners had a 22-14 record in the St. Catherine Bowling League and held a half-game lead over the Garfield Barber Shop and Suding Hardware, both 21-15. Don Allen bowled the top game – a 223 –  and series of the week – a 606.

Bixler Appliances, 3322 Madison Ave., was holding a Christmas appreciation sale. Hotpoint automatic washers and Big Bin refrigerators cost $154.88 and $188.88, respectively, with trade-ins. Hotpoint mobile dishwashers were advertised for $199.95.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1966
Mrs. Charles Rathz won a 25-inch color TV in a raffle hosted by the Sacred Heart High School Alumni Association.

Hill Bros. in Fountain Square advertised women’s and children’s shoes for $1.59 a pair. Nylon hose were 29 cents a pair.

Safeway Quality Foods, 1202 Prospect St., was holding a meat sale. Cube, sirloin and porterhouse steaks were 89 cents, 99 cents and $1.19 a pound, respectively.

Imperial Freezer Meats, 1449 W. Troy Ave., was also conducting a meat sale by offering beef sides for 39 cents a pound. 
 
Forty Years Ago This Week – 1976
The Suburban Multi-T-List Exchange named Bob Haggard, who had sold in excess of $1 million worth of real estate for Tomorrow Realty, as its Salesman of the Year.

McKinney Boys Club, 1949 E. Troy Ave., was holding its annual Christmas tree sale.

Construction was underway on A.O. Diaz and Co.’s new real estate office at 9300 S. Meridian St. Posing for a picture in front of the building were Dale Deerberg, Milly Diaz, Mack McCall, Bob Lane and Mike Baxter.

The R.H. Marlin & Co. basketball team in Baxter YMCA’s girls league completed its season with a 12-0 record. The squad featured Becky Austin, Nancy Hague, Sandy Spears, Janae Wilson, Andrea Burgess, Lesa Jensen, Darla Wells, Stephanie Roark and coach Earline Spears.

Tuttle Jr., outer guard; Alfred O. Swartz, chaplain; John H. Crawford, organist; and William L. Freese and Paul T. Snyder, trustees.

Manual senior and football player Craig Flandermeyer was honored by the Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis for maintaining a perfect grade point average throughout his high school career.

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1996

Southsiders Helen Hare, Marjorie Nackenhorst, George Strack and Garry Wright were among the 25 Indianapolis residents who received the Mayor’s Volunteer Partnership Awards. All the winners were cited for their unselfish service to others.

Joe Wohlhieter III, son of Joe Jr. and Shelli Wohlieter and an honor student at Southport Middle School, was performing in Butler University’s production of “The Nutcracker” for the third year in a row.

Builder Mike Gorman was honored by Catholic Social Services for his volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, for which he supervised the construction of five homes over the past five years.

St. Barnabas Grade School’s Drama Club wrote, produced and performed “Big Bill” and “Sleeping Beauty.” Students involved in the productions were Eric Rolfsen, Bri Campbell, Lindsey Sahm, Kate Shnell, Jodi Bradley, Adrienne Campbell, Jason Harm, Michael Kocker, Colleen Harrington, Amanda Kelley and Kevin Trulock.

Primo Banquet Hall & Catering advertised its New Year’s Eve party. The cost was $50 per person and included a buffet dinner, an open bar, live music, hors d’oeurves and party favors.
