Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove opened a new wing that featured 104 patient beds, operating and delivery rooms, an X-ray department, an auditorium and a cafeteria.

The Meridian Appliance Co., 1117 Prospect St., was holding a going-out-of-business sale. “Everything must go down to the bare walls,” owner Al Epstein said. “Prices are slashed on brand-name furniture, televisions and appliances with unheard-of savings in effect.”

Members of the Indianapolis Hiking Club were going to explore Mounds State Park in Anderson.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
Buck’s Super Market was celebrating its grand opening in its new store at 3001 S. Meridian St. Specials included sirloin and T-bone steak for $1.09 and $1.29 per pound, respectively; 3 pounds of Chase & Sanborn coffee, $1.79; six cans of corn, $1; and a gallon of milk, 69 cents.

The Federation of German Societies was hosting its annual festival at German Park, 8600 S. Meridian St., where Hagemaier’s Band would perform.

Shelby Street Federal Savings & Loan Association paid 4 1/2 percent interest on savings accounts.

Manual Evening School was beginning to offer computer classes.

Dr. Greg A. Hardin, a graduate of Center Grove High, Butler and Indiana University School of Dentistry, opened a dental office at 349 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, where evening and Saturday appointments were available.

The folk dancing Frohliche Schuhplatters from St. Louis were going to perform at the third annual Oktoberfest at German Park.
* * *
Airman LaDonna J. Hite, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman T. Hite, was assigned to Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois after completing basic training.

David P. Zapp, a senior accounting major at Marian College, received a $2,000 scholarship from the Kiwanis Foundation of Indianapolis. He was married to the former Debra Kumburis.

Gas was 56 cents a gallon.

Mr. and Mrs. Troy Bowling, the parents of Sandra Haggard and Jimmie and Rich Bowling, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997
Emily Schmoll, Laura Wilds and Lynn Zloty made the most out of their final day of summer vacation by pulling one another in a cart behind their bicycle. The girls experienced a little trouble with their tow line as it snapped several times and had to be modified.

Beauti Pleat Draperies, which specialized in custom draperies, mini, micro and vertical blinds and pleated shades, relocated to 1289 N. Madison Ave. The business was owned by Shirley Roller and Janet Swigert.

The Perry Aces, a traveling soccer team from the Perry Soccer Club, won its division. The squad featured Brian Dolne, Tommy Stockton, Ben Frieders, Michael Jordan, David Harker, Kiel Hauser, Joe Jansen, Scot Bauman, Chad Hert, Willie McMannis and Garrett Stack.

Randy Bachman of the rock band Bachman Turner Overdrive and a former member of The Guess Who, was appearing at the 4-Play Sports Cafe, 4919 S. Emerson Ave.

The Southside Exchange Club was planning its fifth annual Woodlawn Fish Fry and Festival.

The Cultural Committee of the Greater Southside offered art and Spanish classes.

St. Francis Hospital’s $3 million, six-story addition with 104 beds was just days away from opening.
* * *
Anna Bauman, daughter of William C. Bauman, was entering the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet in St. Louis. 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967

Ronalee S. Rayback and Frank W. Sims were the first couple to be married in the new Resurrection Lutheran Church at 445 E. Stop 11 Road.

Monty Siekerman, a graduate of Southport High, Hanover College and IU Graduate School of Journalism, was named director of university information at Ohio Northern.
* * *
Rumors about the closure of Kennedy Memorial High were found to be untrue. The school’s sports programs were led by athletic director/football coach John Meredith, assistant football and basketball coach Michael “Mickey” Seal and basketball coach Jack Noone.

The Colonial Meadows subdivision, located off Fry Road and just west of U.S. 31 in Greenwood, was being developed. The addition featured custom-built homes from $25,000.

Two pairs of boys leather shoes cost $5 at G.C. Murphy, 1045 Virginia Ave., where women’s long-sleeve blouses were 94 cents.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1977
Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Aline Cafouros, 90, mother of Spotlight Publisher George Cafouros.

Baxter YMCA’s diving team took top honors at the Indiana Open AAU Invitational Championships. First-place divers were Tom Anthony, Rusty Bertram, Jeff VanMeter, Pius Boehm, Cheryl White and Donna Lawrence. Winning medals for second place were Mike Lewis, Jerilyn Frost, Tommy Thomas, Jill Chambers and Tim Ewick.

Kathy Vonderohe was named instructor of nursing at Indiana Central University. Vonderohe, previously employed by Methodist Hospital, had earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Ball State and Indiana universities, respectively.

The Big Red Barn Skating Rink was hosting a 12-hour skate-a-thon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
* * *
St. Roch Catholic School, whose principal was Joseph Schaedel, was in its sixth year of being the first and only all-lay staffed parochial school in the Indianapolis Archdiocese.

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1987
Seven-year-old Lisa Snyder served as honorary chief of the Perry Township Fire Department for a day. She earned the honor by winning a fire safety poster contest.

Nearly 75 second- through fourth-graders from Perry Township Schools attended the Boys-2-Men summer camp, which was designed to increase the participants’ physical, emotional intellectual well-being. The camp was coordinated by Louis Norris, who was assisted by Keary Rininger, Matt Bedorz, Michael Avant and Susan and Michael Hancock.

The Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University reported that drug and tobacco use was down among Hoosier teenagers for the first time in four years.
* * *
Julie and Mitch Elliott opened the Upper Crust Bakery & Cakery at 7634 S. Meridian St.

A dozen roasting ears were $2.50 at Langhorst Greenhouse, 752 W. Hanna Ave.
* * *
The Foo Luck Chinese Restaurant opened in Southern Plaza, where buffet dinners cost $3.50 per child, $6.95 per adult.

The Madison Avenue Businessmen’s Association and Monsignor Downey Knights of Columbus Council 3660 were hosting their annual summer picnics at Walnut Grove and German Park, respectively.

Perry Township 4-H members displayed 388 exhibits at the Marion County Fair. 
* * *
Wolf’s Sportswear, 11107 Shelby St., was holding a clearance sale on all of its summer apparel.
* * *
Nearly a half-million doctors and nurses would be the first to receive the Asian influenza virus vaccine, which was manufactured on the Southside by the Pitman-Moore Co. 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
Manual High School teachers Donald Harmon and John L. Kreuger  and students Stevie Nordholt, Louie Meo, Greg Cafouros, Steve Graves, Donald Darko and Steve Kendricks were on a 19-day tour of France, England, Germany, Holland and Belgium.

First Bank & Trust Co.’s newest branch was under construction at the southeast corner of Meridian Street and Troy Avenue, which was also the site of Buck’s Supermarket.
* * *
“Color TV Today” was a free booklet that answered questions most often asked by people who were considering switching from black and white sets to color ones.
* * *
The Ladies Auxiliary of Ernie Pyle Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1120 celebrated the birthdays of its members who were born in August: Mattie McCarthy, Margaret Windisch, Pauline West, Helen Warren, Josephine Ellis, Lona Lane, Edna Spellman, Donna Lance, Hermela Garcia, Hazel Parkhurst and Myrlyn Nickloff.

Dinner Bell Market, 2824 Shelby St., offered great prices on cases (24/12-ounce cans) of beer: Blatz, $4.99; Pabst Blue Ribbon, $5.59; Budweiser, $5.99; and Miller Lite, $6.99. A case of Wisconsin Club (24/12-ounce returnable bottles) cost $3.79.

Jim Murphy and Bob Chasteen opened Flower World at 936 E. Hanna Ave. The winners of their grand prize – a ceramic planter with a spider plant – were Sandra and Tony Zebrowski.

Tom Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Allen and a 1973 graduate of Manual, earned his bachelor’s degree in business education from Ball State.

The Indiana Department of Highways abruptly cancelled its plans to widen State Road 135 in southern Marion and northern Johnson counties. Sen. Lawrence Borst said the reason was a matter of dollars and cents. “The department simply does not have sufficient funds at this time for such an undertaking. However, the project will remain a priority.”

Roncalli graduate Mary Kay McGinnis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. McGinnis and a sophomore at Indiana University, received one of five Mike Boeke Scholarships awarded by the Home Builders Association of Indiana. The grant’s namesake was a longtime employee of Davidson’s Industries in Southport before his untimely death.

Southern Plaza was undergoing a $3 million facelift.
* * *
Dan Rosa, son of Bert Rosa, was a member of the Indiana softball team that competed in the International Special Olympics at the University of Notre Dame, where it won a bronze medal.

Brad Cougil, Eric McGrath and Carl Kendrick were the captains of Franklin Central High School’s football team. Center Grove’s leaders were Doug Penderson and Jason Gallman; Dave Alexander, Pat Rafferty, Aaron and Bill Mynatt were captains at Perry Meridian.

A community breakfast to benefit the Lilly Boys & Girls Club, 801 S. State St., proved to be a huge success as it raised nearly $2,000, thanks to the efforts of club director Mark Wilson and City-County Councilor Frank T. Short.

Greg Terry and Brad Kantz opened the 4-Play Sports Cafe at 4919 S. Emerson Ave. Their staff members included Rick Peterson, Emi Basil, Rached deHebreard, Kristin Kanter, Brian “House” Hargis, David Wild and Lance Pringle.

Dr. Hope M. Chema joined the medical staff at St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers and was practicing at Massachusetts Avenue Primary Care.

Edgewood Little League’s 9-year-old All-Star baseball team won the Center Grove tournament. The squad featured Jake Maffett, Scott Bauman, Andrew Conley, Travis Boyer, Steven Kirschner, Nathan Graham, Brent Kimbro, Joe Paul, Bill Perry, Paul Strack, Nolan Bernard, Austin Parten and coaches Terry Boyer, Charlie Paul, Bob Bernard, Jeff Conley and Bruce Graham.

The South and West Civic League was organized so area residents could better communicate with their political leaders.

Miller’s Regal Market, 215 Terrace Ave., and Buck’s Quality Foods, 3001 S. Meridian St., were having price wars on meat.

Indiana Center College promoted Dr. Leonard T. Grant to dean of its evening and graduate division and Kenneth C. Partridge to director of the Industrial Relations Center.

The Garfield Y Little League major Indians finished their season with a 16-0 record. The squad featured Donnie and Billy Campbell, Jack Jenkins, Jim Cook, George Berry, Dave Walton, Al Edmunds, Chuck Cothron, Mark Montgomery, Mike Collins, Lonnie Scott, Norm Leonard, manager Charlie Cothron and coach Bob Edmunds.

City-County Councilor Dave McGrath took issue with Councilor Paul Cantwell for presenting a petition of remonstrance against a proposed $1.6 million bond issue that would fund the widening of Raymond Street.

Dr. Dominic A. Zappia, a podiatrist, was going to open his practice at the office of Dr. Frank W. Fortuna, a family doctor, in Beech Grove.

Supreme Bicycle Shop owner George Dudgeon was recognized by the Southport Lions Club for being in business 50 years.

The Rev. J.D. Kavich, pastor of Calvary United Methodist Church, was going to lead his third tour of the Holy Land.

Airman Matthew F. DesJean, son of Cyril W. DesJean and a 1977 graduate of Perry Meridian, completed Air Force basic training and was assigned to Lowry Air Force Base.

Southport resident Frank Epperson Jr., confined to a wheelchair because of spina bifida, won three bronze medals at the World Wheelchair Championships in England.

Bryan Kalen, a 1985 graduate of Roncalli and a junior at IUPUI, was selected as one of the four male cheerleaders for the Indiana Pacers.

Amanda Caldwell, a 10-year-old Beech Grove resident, was a finalist in Nabisco’s Oreo stacking contest, which commemorated the cookie’s 85th birthday.

The seventh-grade team featured Kelly Andrews, Cari Kauffman, Maggie Oldham, Lauren Corrie, Lindsay Macy, Savannah Schmall, Natalie Oser, Ashley Donnell, Natalie Labejof and Stephanie Johnson.
