“Bunny” and Anita Lauck and their six children moved into their new home on Brill Road.

Shelby Street United Methodist Church, 2904 Shelby St., celebrated its 50th anniversary.

WFBM-TV was planning 21 live telecasts from the Indiana State Fair, opening Sept. 1 for a 10-day run.

The MCL in the 3600 block of South U.S. 31 installed steam tables to improve the quality of its food.

Dorothy M. Phillips was named the inaugural recipient of the Greenwood Sertoma Club’s Johnnie Baker Memorial Scholarship, valued at $1,000.

Boy Scouts from Troop 51 at St Jude Church hiked the 16-mile 10 O’clock Line Trail from Yellowwood Lake to Brown County State Park. The Scouts were John Shipp, Steve Bruner, Steve Eberg, John Mappes, Tom Brown, John F. Beach and Mark, Mike and Randy O’Neil. Their scoutmaster was Roy MacBeth.

The Federation of German Societies was holding its annual fall festival at German Park, 8600 S. Meridian St.

Thanks to donations from the Southport High School Booster Club, a Pro-Power was purchased for the football team. Providing a demonstration was coach Chuck Robbins while Principal Albert Theil (from left), athletic director Jack Bradford, club president Bob Klein and former president John “Mike” Doty observed.

Crossroads Lincoln-Murphy, 4015 S. U.S. 31, advertised its new Bobcats and Zephyrs for $4,287 and $4,582, respectively.

Dinner Bell Market, 2824 Shelby St., boasted its lowest prices ever on beer: a case (24 12-ounce cans) of Wiedemann cost $3.99; a case of Stroh’s, $5.99; a case of Olympia, $6.39; two cases of Pabst Blue Ribbon, $11; and two cases of Miller Lite, $13.

30 Years Ago This Week - 1989
White Castle was going to serve free coffee to travelers over the Labor Day weekend.

Picture1999 St. Mark Catholic Church, 535 W. Edgewood Ave., culminated its five-year renovation program with the placing of this steeple.
Center Grove High School’s fans exploded as the Trojans scored a touchdown against Roncalli in the first quarter at the RCA Dome. Unfortunately for Center Grove, the thrill was short-lived as the Rebels went on to win 21-7.

Perry Township Schools named Perry Meridian High School math teacher Allen Boehm as its Educator of the Year. Allen previously coached the boys and girls tennis teams for 18 years.  

10 Years Ago This Week - 2009

The eighth annual Kristi’s Games took place at Lutheran High. The event was held in honor of Kristi Schultz Broughton, a cheerleading coach and kindergarten teacher who was killed by a drunken driver in 2001.

Sharon Roberts and Dakoda and Shelley Johnson manned the Sticky Fingers concession stand at WAMM (wine, art, music and microbrew) fest in Greenwood. Dakoda, a junior at Center Grove High School, started the business to earn money so he could attend diving camps.

Joe Wyatt (left), minister of Whiteland United Methodist Church, helped launch Under the Sun Cafe, which donated all of its profits to local charities. The restaurant served sandwiches, salads, soups and pastries and featured live music.

60 Years Ago This Week - 1959
Students in Perry Township Schools learned that they wouldn’t report for classes until Sept. 8.

Lee Ann Pierle entered the novitiate of the Benedictine Sisters of Our Lady of Grace Convent in Beech Grove.

U.S. Civil and Defense director Leo A. Hoegh said everyone -- even those far away from a likely target -- needed shelter from fallout in the event of a nuclear attack.

The Indianapolis Hiking Club met at Cataract Falls State Park for an outing.
  
50 Years Ago This Week - 1969
The Twin Drive-in Theater, 3000 Southeastern Ave., featured swap meets on weekends. Vendors were charged $3 for booth space, and admission was 25 cents per adult.

Couples tying the knot included Janie Toney and Kenneth Miller, and Jennifer Vogelhut and Steven Somers.

Kay Goldman, a member of the Beech Grove Homemakers Club, was recognized for taking first-place honors in the 20th annual apple pie contest at the Marion County Fair.

Accent on Flowers, 7624 S. Meridian St., celebrated its grand opening.
* * *
Twins Christopher (left) and Matthew Lawrence of Beech Grove were awarded blue belts (the equivalent of black belts) in tang soo do, Korea’s traditional martial art. They are seen with their instructor and father, Robert, who earned his blue belt while serving in the U.S. military during the Korean War.

Chris Manifold, son of Mike and Carolyn and a 1995 graduate of Perry Meridian High, won the Rookie Dash at the United Midget Racing Association’s Rushville Nationals.

10 Years Ago This Week - 2009
Thanks to a program funded by the Central Indiana Council on Aging, Perry Senior Services was able to serve lunch to Perry Township residents age 60 and over for $2 weekdays at the Southport Community Center.

Steve Davis was named interim chief of the Southport Police Department by Mayor Rob Thoman, filling the position vacated by Duane Burgess.
* * *
Indiana’s high school football season kicked off with defending Class 5A champ Center Grove defeating Perry Meridian 32-0. Roncalli knocked off Southport 21-13, and Beech Grove downed Lutheran 25-19 in overtime.
