60 Years Ago This Week - 1962 
Construction on the Indianapolis fire station at Shelby Street and Hanna Avenue was expected to commerce in the near future.

Kinney’s Shoes at the point of U.S. 31 and Madison Avenue held a huge sale. When buying a pair of shoes for $2.99, the second pair cost 1 cent.

Richard Emery, Joe Buergler, Charles Possman, Carl Bates and Harold Schuman were elected to the Greater Southside Inc.’s board of directors.

Work was progressing on the YMCA’s swimming pool at 7900 Shelby St., with a completion date set for June 1.
* * *
J. Bernard Smith and Michael Hittle were named manager and assistant manager, respectively, of American Fletcher National Bank’s Southport branch, which was opening in March.
 
50 Years Ago This Week - 1972
Terrence P. Osburn, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Osburn, was named valedictorian of Cathedral High School. He had been awarded a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, where he planned to study pre-law.

Gail Butterfield, a senior at Manual and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Butterfield, was a sweetheart candidate for DeMolay’s annual dance, an event for youths in the Masonic organization.

Southport High School students Sharon Bellamy, Carole Perkins, Elizabeth Heacox, Carolyn Tetrick and Joe Yeager were making plans for their summer studies in England, France and Russia.

The “Jim and Jesse Show,” a Grand Ole Opry production starring brothers Jim and Jesse McReynolds, made a stop at Central Hardware at U.S. 31 and Shelby Street.

The Fireside South Restaurant, 522 E. Raymond St., served a Valentine’s Day dinner for two for $27.95. The meal included a sizzling filet mignon, salad, potato and dessert.

The fifth- and sixth-grade B volleyball team from St. Barnabas School won a preseason tournament. Lincoln Elementary Principal Keith Brown led a series of meetings to discuss the school’s policies.

30 Years Ago This Week - 1992
Baptist Temple High School, 2700 block of South East Street, dedicated its “new” gym floor. The floor, purchased for $250, came from the old Lutheran High and was originally laid in a Franklin Township school on Post Road in the mid-1930s. One contractor wanted $77,000 to take it up, lay it and refinish it; volunteers from Baptist Temple performed the job for about $15,000.

Stephen Maple, an associate professor at the University of Indianapolis and an attorney, announced his candidacy for the Perry Township School Board.
* * *
The new Sisters’ Restaurant opened at 215 Terrace Ave., with “Baldy” and “Buddy” Nordholt and “Mom” Richter being the first customers. The trio was diner’s original patrons when it opened in 1983 on Shelby St.

Dr. Robert Hignite, a drug education instructor at Manual, was named Indianapolis Schools’ Teacher of the Year. Other finalists were Lynn Noel, Jean Fritsch and Roberta Hannon.

Gloria Dock, a 17-year real estate agent, joined ReMax Preferred Realtors. A graduate of Indiana Central College, she was a two-time finalist for Indianapolis’ Realtor of the Year.

Ted’s Feed Store in Beech Grove and Edgewood Feed & Seed, 5518 Shelby St., celebrated their 55th and 75th anniversaries, respectively. They combined to sell more than 340,000 pounds of bird seed annually, and Ted’s sold about 600,000 pounds of horse food on a yearly basis.

Perry Meridian senior Erin Massie took grand-prize honors in the mystery story writing contest sponsored by Hershey’s Chocolates, in which he was awarded a $5,000 savings bond. Other winners from the school were Katie Merida, Alexis Sisko, Jessica Cleary, Heidi McKenzie, Shelby Nelson, Rob Cravens, Alvin Lange, Miriam Huck, Morgan Dotts, Matt Ashmore, Amanda Ferrand, Janette Taylor, Tom Bryant, Emma Cahill and DeAnna Pflum.

60 Years Ago This Week - 1962 

Indianapolis Public School 65, near Indiana Central College (now the University of Indianapolis), organized a PTA and elected its officers: Mrs. Gordon Geiger, president; Wallace Decker, vice president; Nathan Wooden, treasurer; Mrs. Earl Collier, recording secretary; and Mrs. Edwin Shoaf, corresponding secretary.

The $55,000 collection of elegant gowns worn by Jill St. John, Joan Fontaine and Jennifer Jones in the movie “Tender Is the Night” was displayed at Block’s department store in Southern Plaza.

Judy Ziegler’s 7-month-old raccoon, Jud, ran away from his kennel. Ziegler, who was offering a reward for the little critter’s return, had raised him from an orphaned runt to a plump 17 pounds.

Fisher Bros. Furniture & Appliances, 1315 Shelby St., offered what it called “a once-in-a-lifetime buy”: a Cloud Foam mattress and box springs for $49.50 a piece.
