Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
Sisters-in-law Lola Dillon, Ethel Dillon and Olive Walton were killed in a car crash at Meridian Street and Hoss Road. The women had just left a Christmas party and were making a left turn onto Meridian when they were hit broadside by a car driven by John P. Hudson, who died the following day.

Queen candidates for Sacred Heart Central High School’s snowball dance were senior Diane Ray, junior JoAnn Seyfried, sophomore Joanne Lippert and freshman Sharon Mitchum.

More than 40 choral groups and various musicians were going to perform at the Union Station’s Christmas pageant.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
G.C. Murphy’s in Fountain Square was going to remain open until 6 p.m. Christmas Eve.

Manual High School’s choir, whose members included Sheila Betzer, Fred Brown, Karen Cain, Joyce Thompson and Mickey Bridgewaer, presented its Christmas concert.

In recognition of her knowledge about political, national and state events, Manual senior Peggy Collier received the school’s Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.

The Shelby Street Merchants Association was hosting a Christmas party for children at the Garfield Theatre. Every child would be treated to a holiday film and a gift.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1977
A new addition, Valley Ridge Farms, was being developed off of Stop 11 Road between Rahke and Bluff roads. More than 350 lots were for sale, including 22 that overlooked the lake.

Snowmobiling was allowed on the fairways at Sarah Shank Golf Course when 4 or more inches of snow were on the ground.

More than 4,500 colorful poinsettias were on display at the Garfield Park Conservatory.

Tickets for Holy Name Church’s New Year’s Eve dinner and dance cost $30 per couple.

Katrina Feldhake, a senior at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Feldhake, was named to the 1978 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

A fire gutted the Madison Avenue Flower Shop near Manual High School.

Good little boys and girls could tell Santa Claus their secret Christmas wishes at Southern Plaza.

Mary K. Synder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Synder, and Scottie I. DeArmond, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy L. DeArmond, were engaged to be married May 6 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church.

The top series for the week were reported by the following bowling alleys: Beech Grove Bowl, Lonnie Hutton, 679; Ruth Baker, 593; Expo Bowl, Max Jones, 726; Carolyn Eckel, 609; Shelby Bowl, Roger Rockey, 697; Paula Patterson, 573; Southern Bowl, Carl Bradley Jr., 754; Kim Skrzypcazk, 633; and Sport Bowl; Mark Beason, 694; Shirley Holtsclaw, 592. 

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997
St. Jude’s new church and altar was anointed by Indianapolis Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, who celebrated the first Mass with the Rev. Gerald J. Kirkhoff, parish pastor. The 20,736-square-foot worship center cost $2.3 million.

Mr. and Mrs. Lester Chaney, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Elsbury and Mr. and Mrs. Curt S. Shirley were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversaries.

Roncalli’s girls basketball team upped its record to 8-1 by defeating Cathedral 73-65 for the city title, the ninth under coach Bob Kirkhoff. The squad featured Michelle Madden, Erynne Yeager, Adrienne Manley, Jean Buckel, Courtney Lindop, Missy Alexander, Lori Paul, Chrissy Piazza, Molly Rush, Casey Meek, Jenna Hays and Erin Moran. The latter two were named to the All-City team.

Alexis Tullos, daughter of Marshall and Tonya Tullos and a fifth-grader at Homecroft Elementary, took fourth-place honors in Level 5 competition of the state gymnastics finals in Noblesville.

Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
The senior choir of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, corner of South New Jersey and East McCarty streets, was rehearsing for its Christmas concert.

A contest for the homes with the best Christmas lights was being hosted by the Indianapolis Jaycees. There were divisions for displays of less than 500 lights and more than 500. The winners would represent Indianapolis in a national contest for awards.

John Koch Furniture, 826 Virginia Ave., had marked down most of its merchandise by 40 percent.

The chancel choir of Southport Heights Christian Church, 117 Pine St., was rehearsing for its production of “My Christmas Gift.”

Tickets for the New Year’s Eve dinner and dance at The Chateau Restaurant and Supper Club, 8902 S. St. Peter St., cost $48.50 per couple.

Flower World, corner of Madison and Hanna avenues, reduced the price of its poinsettias by 20 percent.

 Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1987
The two dilapidated dairy barns on the grounds of Southside Park, 2000 E. Hanna Ave., were going to be razed to make room for a playground and a 60-by-80-foot multipurpose building with a covered patio and a spray pool.

When former Indiana Central student Gerald Ruark went to visit his old dorm room in Buxton Hall, he discovered that it had been transformed into office space for the school’s radio station, WICR-FM. Ruark, who owned Alpha Records in Southport, saw the coat hook that he had installed in the room’s closet during his mid-1950s days at IC.

Arthur Hopkins, a three-year volunteer at University Heights Hospital, received the hospital’s December Share Award. He and his wife, Louise, had two children and four grandchildren.

Don and Janet Shaffer, who owned a pet shop in Beech Grove, opened the Keystone Pet Corral at 4031 Carson Ave. Both stores featured birds, fish, dogs, kittens and pet supplies.

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997
The lead story focused on the work of Todd and Cheryl Poindexter, who directed youth ministry programs at The Salvation Army’s Fountain Square Corps.

Third-graders at Homecroft Elementary School dedicated their rock garden, which provided them curriculum enhancement in geography, geology and environmental awareness.

Garfield Pub & Eatery Manager Rita De Vaney and her employees raised nearly $2,100 to brighten the holidays for needy families.
* * *
David C. Brenton was named Realtor of the Year for the Southside Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors. He and his wife, Jane, who had two daughters, Sarah and Katie, both of whom attended Perry Meridian High School.

Thomas McCormick, a graduate of Manual High School, was elected president of the freshman class at Indiana Central College.

Hanover College freshman Dick Speth, a graduate of Sacred Heart High School, earned a letter playing quarterback for the Panthers. 
* * *
The Sacred Heart Altar Society was going to give away more than 60 embroidered pillow cases during its pre-Christmas card party.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
Howard Beasley was the manager and pharmacist of the new Hook’s Drug Store at 6908 Madison Ave. He was assisted by Robert A. Mayer and Robert Chelf.

Lt. Col. Charles Sanders received a long-awaited medal from Korea for heroism displayed when serving as an adviser to the Korea army in 1950.
* * *
Coached by Jim Wessel and Chet Coy, the Green Hornet football team at Baxter YMCA finished its season 12-0-1 and won the city title. The squad featured 8- and 9-year-olds.
* * *
WHOOPS – Wives of Officers Presently Stationed Elsewhere – was going to host its Christmas party at the Victorian Restaurant in Riley Towers, 650 N. Alabama St.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1977

A fundraiser was underway for an addition to Resurrection Lutheran Church, 445 E. Stop 11 Road, where the Rev. Kaye E. Olson served as pastor.

Brian J. Freese, a member of Boy Scout Troop 39, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor attainable. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Freese and an eighth-grader at Southport Middle School.

C.W. “Woody” Burton was named president and general manager of A.O. Diaz and Co. Realtors.
* * *
An ambulatory clinic, spearheaded by Drs. Frank Fortuna and Marvin Christie, opened in University Heights Hospital, 3350 Carson Ave. 

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1987

Indiana Bell was reducing its rates. Single line business customers would see decreases ranging from $1.20 to $1.78 month; multiline customers would save between $1.28 and $1.93 a line.

Jason “Jay” Allen,” a fourth-grader at St. Mark School, won first-place honors in the Marion County Sheriff’s Department’s Say No to Drugs poster contest. He won $500 and had his picture taken with Mayor William Hudnut, Sheriff Joseph McAtee and Prosecutor Stephen Goldsmith.

Marilyn Salmon relocated her Precious Moments Bridal Boutique to 7747 Madison Ave.
* * *
Roncalli’s girls basketball team was off to a 5-0 start behind the stellar play of All-State candidate Colleen Jordan, who scored a school-record 34 points in a 59-41 over Greenwood. Also playing a key role in the team’s success were Ronnie Huck, Erin Duncan and Kathleen McCarthy. 

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997

Opened in 1928 as one of the most impressive buildings on the Southside, the Fountain Square Theatre was undergoing a $2 million renovation after years of neglect. The funding came through a creative partnership between NBD Bank, Southeast Neighborhood Development and the Local Initiatives Support Corp.

Perry Meridian High School History Department Chairman Jerry Brown was featured in a story penned by fellow faculty member Craig Potter, who wrote that Brown did more than teach history ... he lived his job through extracurricular activities.

Marty’s Lounge, owned by Ron and Tina Dudas and located at 4056 S. Keystone Ave., was hosting its ninth annual Toys for Tots party. The event was billed as the largest of its kind in Indiana.

Frank Mascari, who owned Spalding Jewelry, 701 Main St., took out a full-page ad to promote his Christmas sale, which featured diamond, topaz and sapphire rings priced from $26 to $2,312.

St. Roch Brownie Troop members Rose Meyer, Angie and Juliana Schott, Sarah Ferry, Brittany Eisenback and Kathy Zapp went for a ride in the restored L.S. Ayres Christmas Train at the Indiana State Museum.
