60 Years Ago This Week – 1959
Indiana native Monte Blue, who appeared in TV shows like “Rin Tin Tin” and “The Lone Ranger,” was going to appear before the South-port Lions Club and at the Murat Shrine Circus at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, where the four-day extravaganza was expected to attract more than 100,000 spectators.

Due to the demand of central Indiana teenagers, WLWI was expanding its coverage of “American Bandstand” with Dick Clark from 30 minutes to the full one-hour show.

Chocolate-covered marshmallow Easter bunnies cost 5 cents at Murphy’s in Fountain Square, and a pound of jelly beans was on sale for 25 cents.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1969
Manual journalism students Bev Butler, Gaylen Fox, Sharon Hite, Sandy Hodges, Rick Shrewsbury and Debbie Smiley were inducted into the school’s Quill & Scroll Club.

summer studying abroad in London, Paris, Munich and Geneva.

Lawrence Central High School athletic director Don Challis, who resided in Beech Grove, was named the 1988 State Athletic Director of the Year by the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

The Indianapolis Water Co. was experiencing a taste and odor problem from its White River water supply, most likely brought on because of the recent drought.

James and Sandra Gobert, the parents of
Lisa and Leslie Gobert, were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary.

20 Years Ago This Week – 1999
Cub Scouts from Pack 51 at St. Jude Grade School con-structed and raced Pinewood derby cars. Those with the best times were John and Joe Skibinski, Christopher Bova, Jay David-son, Zachary Sparks, Daniel Barrer, Paul Weber, Alan Bennett, Jonathan Fink, Johnathan Wolfschlag, Toby Woodward and Aaron Nolot.

The number of bald eagles that wintered in Indiana was down 10 percent. Biologists found only 100 eagles - the lowest number in eight years and down considerably from the record high of 178 in 1996 - and blamed the decrease on an arctic blast. Many of the state’s rivers and lakes were froze over and the absence of open water may have forced the eagles farther south. 
10 Years Ago This Week – 2009
Natalya Adams was celebrating her 28th year as a volunteer for Perry Senior Citizens Services, having served as director from 1987 to 2001. She de-livered meals to homebound seniors, often taking her husband, Robert, son David or grandson Calvin with her.

Limpus Ready-to-Wear apparel and Loyd’s Shoes, both located at 2742 Madison Ave., announced evening hours until 9 p.m. weekdays.

The Madison Avenue Businessmen’s Association and the Southport Jaycees were planning Easter egg hunts. * * *
Easter baskets overflowing with candy and toy novelties cost between 99 cents and $1.29 at G.C. Murphy in Fountain Square. * * * The Nine Star Tavern, 2101 S. East St., boasted that its steak, catfish and chicken dinners were among the best in town.

Picture1999 Raymond C. and Lucinda M. (Orme) Bertram were celebrating their 30th anniversary. The Bertrams, who were retired and like to golf and travel, had four children, Lisa Stone and Joseph, Robert and Jonathan Bertram, and six grandchildren.
The boys basketball team from Calvary Lutheran School finished its season 24-0. The squad featured Keith Kehlbeck, David Broadhead, Doug Shull, Bruce Clark, Gary Conley, Tom Edwards, Dan Weimer, Jeff Kasting, Mark Waterman, Phil Hendershott, Steve Natterstad, Mark Fuhrmann and coach Jim Vance, who commented, “We hope to see a couple of these boys playing at Southport High in a few years.”

Three half-gallons of milk cost $1 at Meisberger’s Big Supermarket, 1229 Kentucky Ave., where a buck also bought a dozen eggs.

Baxter YMCA swimmers Lori Reeder, David Clapper, Scott Kane, Andy Spears and Margaret Garvey qualified for a state swimming meet.

30 Years Ago This Week – 1989
Roncalli’s valedictorian was Jennifer Maude, who planned to study political science and history at Depauw University.

A new fire station proposed by the White River Volunteer Fire Department drew opposition from nearby residents on Runyon Road, who feared the facility would result in a reduction of their property values.

Don and Jewell Resener, both graduates of Southport High School, opened the Fountain Square Antique Mall at 1056 Virginia Ave.
* * *
Beverly Sims, director of the University of Indianapolis’ Health Center, received the Peters Award for her efforts in running the facility.

Gerry Miller, a member of the Sarah Shank Ladies Golf Club, recorded a hole-in-one at the Kiva Dunes course in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The five remaining brothers of the Peter and Nellie James family - Ralph, George, Bill, the Rev. Frank and Danny James - got together for a golf outing in Florida.

Region 7 of the Indiana Football Coaches Association honored its award winners from Perry Meridian: Greg Wilson, Brad Moore, Jason Feldhake, Ryan Short, Jason Hull and Kyle Hoyt.

10 Years Ago This Week - 2009

Former Southport Mayor Nannette Tunget recalled her 17 years of leading the city. She said the 2002 tornado, which clobbered the intersection at Madison Avenue and Southport Road, provided the worst and best moments of her tenure.

60 Years Ago This Week – 1959 Tickets for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s concert at Indiana Central College cost $1.

Officers of the newly formed Perry Township Schools Council were: Mrs. Christian Brehob, president; Roscoe Kirkman, vice president; Mrs. W.J. Faust, recording secretary; and Mrs. Allen E. Smith, treasurer.

Nativity Grade School hosted a roast beef buffet dinner. The meal, which included mashed potatoes, salad, vegetables and hot rolls, cost 60 cents per child, $1.25 per adult.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1969
Manual juniors Stephen Hendricks, Janet Hoffmeister, Frank Knoll, James McDaniel, Timothy Mogie, Martha Norcross, Patricia O’Connor, Rebecca Rogers, Peggy Stroud and Joyce Thompson were recognized as the top students in their class.

Beached whale? Tethered blimp? Giant albino grub worm? Nope, none of those. It was the latest addition to the Southside’s skyline, the inflated golf dome at 2106 E. National Ave., where avid golfers could keep their game sharp during the off-season.

Ignacio Bravo opened Little Mexico III at 1285 N. State Road 135, Greenwood. The restaurant’s servers included Susana Quezada, Nancy Limon, Angeles and Ismael Murillo, Ignacio Bravo Jr., Tony Rodriquez and Jorge Lora.

60 Years Ago This Week – 1959
The recent square dance at the new Knights of Columbus hall, 511 E. Thompson Road, was such a hit that another one was being planned.

The merchants around the intersection of Raymond and Shelby streets were known to be some of the friendliest on the Southside.
* * *
The Alumni Boosters of Sacred Heart School were serving fish and shrimp dinners for $1 and $1.25, respectively, on Fridays throughout Lent. Fish sandwiches cost 25 cents.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1969
Shonk’s Bus Transportation was recognized for logging 137,000 accident-free miles for Perry Township Schools. The drivers included George Frye, Ralph Niehaus, Alve Coryell, Betty Phelps and Mary Hancock.

Karen Brosey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Gallo and a graduate of Southport High School, was elected Miss AFNB (American Fletcher National Bank) by her fellow employees. Brosey worked in the credit department.

The Greater Southside Republican Club elected its officers: Earl Myers, president; Mrs. Arthur Persinger, vice president; Mrs. Edwin L. Healy, secretary; Harold Norcross, treasurer.

Linda Dillehay, Bobbie Perry and Jenny Parish sold 1,306 boxes of Camp Fire Girls candy. The girls, who attended IPS School 19, led District 7 in sales.

40 Years Ago This Week – 1979
The Third Generation Band was going to perform at the annual Gaslight Gayeties at Roncalli, where Jerry Cosby would serve as master of ceremonies. Old-fashioned gas lights, red checkered tablecloths, candlelight and an antique popcorn wagon - busily popping corn - would add atmosphere to the evening of dancing and singalongs.

Zane G. Todd was elected to the board of directors of the United Way of Central Indiana.
* * *
U.S. senators and representatives spent nearly $50 million on postage in 1978, all at taxpayers’ expense.
* * *
In addition to its fine food, Luke’s Old Dutch Delicatessen, 2949 S. Meridian St., was known for serving hot pickled pigs feet.

30 Years Ago This Week – 1989
Asit Parikh and Tina Yen earned valedictorian and salutatorian honors, respectively, at Perry Meridian. Parikh, whose GPA was 4.62, had not decided on a college but planned to study biology. Yen was going to pursue a degree in economics or international relations at Stanford or the University of California at Berkley.

University of Indianapolis President G. Benjamin Lantz Jr. was going to speak at the Lenten breakfast sponsored by Southside United Methodist Churches.

Top winners in the sixth annual Perry Science Fair were Marty Schoegl, Craig Atkins, Chris Wilson, Rosendo Tansinsin and Sharon Cardwell.

Perry Meridian’s boys basketball team won its first sectional title since 1984 by defeating Decatur Center 51-43.

St. Jude Grade School teacher Carolyn Meisberger was honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution for teaching her students the importance of loyalty to the United States.
* * *
John F. Maxwell, a graduate of Southport High School and a photographer for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife, won three first-place prizes in the Hoosier Outdoor Writers Association’s annual competition. One of his articles was about fishing for muskellunge.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2009
The Thirsty Turtle, 2949 S. Meridian St., was going to roast a hog and have live music at its St. Patrick’s Day party.

St. Roch Parish’s junior-senior Catholic Youth Organization basketball team (18-0) won the league championship. Team members were Drew Oechsle, Connor Mullin, Noal Rincker, Chris Bova, J.T. Stiles, Ben Polizzi, Nick Eble, Austin Hohmann, Jeff Feltman, Chad Merrill and coach John Mullin.
