As part of its Easter promotion, Murphy’s department store gave away baby chickens to its young customers.

The brand-new Southern Plaza Shopping Center, 4202 S. U.S. 31, boasted many businesses, including Kroger, J.C. Penney, Kay Jewelry, Roselyn Bakery, Hook Drugs, First Federal Savings & Loan, Kimmel Shoe Repair, Tuchman Cleaners, Lyric Record Shop and American Fletcher National Bank. There were enough parking spaces for 3,000 cars.

Grocery specials of the week included two 12-ounce bottles of ketchup for 25 cents; whole chickens, 29 cents a pound; eggs, 39 cents a dozen; and 3 pounds of hamburger, $1.

​Yours truly penned a column about St. Roch teacher Dick Gallamore turning 40 and being named WRTV’s Educator of the Week. I recalled an event during his first year at the school. Fellow classmates Randy Kristle, Tom Kersey, Timmy Meyer, Ricky Stumpf and myself started a repeating chant of “Gallamore wants a moon!” during morning recess. Dick didn’t think it was as funny as we did and made us write 1,000 times that “Gallamore doesn’t want a moon.” He was and still is one helluva teacher.

Manual’s basketball team made it to the Sweet 16 of the state tournament for the first time since 1922.

The deli at Meridian Meat Market, 7743 S. Meridian St., advertised homemade cottage cheese for 29 cents a pound; slaw, potato salad and baked beans, 39 cents a pound; barbecued pork, 69 cents a pound; and baked ham, $1.38 a pound.

Ted’s Steak House, located at 5002 Madison Ave. and owned by Ted Antonopoulos, was known for serving fine dinners.
