The Madison Avenue Businessmen’s Association’s Halloween party for children was being held at Manual High School.

Wills furniture shop in Fountain Square featured living room suites from $199.95.

The outbreak of influenza prompted Indianapolis Public School 35 to cancel its bean supper.

Morgan’s Restaurant at Madison Avenue and Brill Road reported that its 15-year anniversary celebration was a big hit with all of its customers. 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
Indiana Central College President Dr. I. Lynd Esch announced the appointment of Edwin G. “Ted” Plum as the school’s vice president of development. Plum recently retired as vice president and comptroller of Indiana Bell, where he was employed 43 years.

The South Side Boys Club was sponsoring a drapery and slip cover sale at Queen’s Furniture & Appliance Store.

The Rev. Luther G. Strasen, pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church in Greenwood, was chairman of the festival being hosted by 40 local Lutheran churches.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1977
A series of 11 Masses was going to be celebrated hourly from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at the chapel at St. Joseph’s Cemetery to commemorate All Souls Day (Nov. 2).

The 12th annual Masons & Catholics Golf Outing was going to be held at El Dorado County Club, 2080 S. State Road 135, Greenwood.

Perry Meridian sophomore Robb Ryan, son of Ron and Patricia Ryan, brought down his first deer with a bow and arrow at Camp Atterbury. The 10-point buck weighed 305 pounds.

Don Stone opened Southside Health Foods at 6807 Madison Ave. His shop, managed by daughter Julie A. Stone, carried natural food supplements, dehydrated foods, mineral water, vitamins, raw honey, etc.

Kevin Kahn, son of Ishu and Petty Kahn, won a 10-speed bicycle, courtesy of the Supreme Bicycle Store, 5505 Madison Ave., at the annul picnic hosted by the T.L.&L Homeowners Association.   

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1987
Jim Walsh, a seventh-grader at St. Jude School, was one of the winners in the energy policy slogan contest sponsored by the Indiana Department of Commerce. Jennifer Balhon, an eighth-grader, placed first in the Catholic Youth Organization’s speech contest.

Roncalli students Angie Devore, Joe Hendel and Kim Grissom had roles in the school’s light-hearted production of “Heaven Can Wait.”

McCarrel Jewelers, 2610 Madison Ave., was holding its 54th anniversary sale.

The Dessert Basket Ice Cream & Dessert Bakery, 932 E. Hanna Ave., featured an array of Halloween treats.

The Perry Soccer Club’s 12 and under team was preparing for its season-ending tournament. The squad featured Matt Overbeck, Jill Dickey, Angie Batey, Aaron Martiage, Eric Myers, Tommy Paul, Mike Anslinger, Ben Danner, Chris Elsner, Mark Schaad, Zac Armstrong, Kurt Lunsford, Chris Fenske, Mark Madden, Steven Roll, Alex Will and coach Cheri Armstrong. 

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997
Featuring flower gardens, an orchard and a pond, the outdoor lab at Burkhart Elementary School provided students with an array of opportunities for hands-on learning.

Phyllis Fisher, a 1956 graduate of Beech Grove High, was inducted into the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame. Fisher played fast-pitch softball for 15 years and batted over .300.

Megan Miller, a graduate of Perry Meridian and the daughter of Jerry and Cindy Miller, was a candidate for homecoming queen at Purdue, where she was a senior majoring in law and psychology.

Roncalli’s volleyball team (30-6) defeated Edgewood to claim its fifth consecutive regional crown. Pictured accepting the regional plaque were Desirae Cobb, Erynne Yeager, Erin Lupke, Jennifer Neely and Mandy Verner.

Center Grove High School’s marching band finished third in Class A at the Indiana State School Music Association Finals at the RCA Dome.

Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Turpin won a gas range during the grand opening of Citizens Gas & Coke’s Eastside branch. Mr. Turpin, who was employed by the U.S. Rubber Co., said it was the first time he had won anything.

A three-bedroom home with a garage was listed for $15,500.
* * *
Rock Hudson and Dana Wynter were starring in “Something of Value” at the Oriental Theatre, 11105 S. Meridian St.

Indianapolis Public School 35 had to cancel its bean supper because of a flu epidemic at the school.  

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
Southport High School students Marajo Hawkins, Diana Elliot, Sally Burnett, Teresa Moseman, Katie Baker, Pam George, Kathy Foster and Diane Langley were honored for their volunteer service at St. Francis Hospital.

Dr. Malcolm L. Broome was installed as pastor at Southport Baptist Church. He previously served at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Booneville, Ind.

Beth Anne Blanchard, a graduate of Southport High School, received a $750 scholarship to attend Marion County General Hospital School of Nursing.
* * *
Mrs. Bill Summers was pictured modeling a mink stole to be auctioned by South Group Women’s Committee of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Jackie Gleason was reported to have attended the 12:10 p.m. Mass at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Carl C. Beck, executive director of the Indianapolis Housing Authority, announced his retirement. He had served under nine mayors.

Roncalli’s varsity, reserve and freshman volleyball teams had a combined record of 72-3. The varsity stood at 31-2, the reserve 21-1 and the freshmen 21-0.

Sen. Richard Lugar endorsed Nelson S. Hart for mayor of Beech Grove.
* * *
Tracie L. Torrence and Roger Timmerman and Dottie Barnhill and Jeff Linton announced their wedding plans.

Drs. Charles Coats and Joe Mayoral opened a practice for child and adolescent psychiatry at the Valle Vista Professional Building in Greenwood.

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997
Dave Carmichael hosted a Halloween party and a pig roast. Those attired in ghoulish costumes included Kathy Armstrong, James Bush, David Syrus, Joe Russell, Mary and Tom Hein, Barb and Joe Tanner, Jim Mackey, Janice Turk, Cindy Hudson, Brad Miller, Mark Sekel, Mike Kirkmeyer, Annie Rogers, Mike Priskard, Donna and John Cantner and yours truly.

Roncalli senior Tony Dale, son of Tom and Joan Dale, received a WISH TV We Value Youth Award for his work with TeenLine, a hotline for teens who needed someone to talk to.

The fourth-grade Maroon kickball team from St. Barnabas won its division in the Catholic Youth Organization with a 7-0 record. The squad featured Sarah Hurm, Lauren Cook, Molly McCarty, Emily Holsapple, Kristen Vercruysse, Molly Shank, Brittany Feldman, Ashley Waugh, Amy McCoy, Vanessa Pinna, Krista Langferman, Rayta Trumble, Alyson Bontrager and coaches Debbie McCoy and Clare Trumble.

Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
Southport High School’s new gym, which would seat 8,200 fans and house a pool, was under construction.

Twenty-five bands, 1,800 musicians and 400 baton twirlers were going to participate the Central and Southern Indiana Marching Band Contest at Southport High, where more than 6,000 spectators were expected to be on hand.

Heiskell’s Garden and Gift House, 3850 S. Meridian St., was holding a sale on its imported Holland bulbs, which included tulips, crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
The Rev. Paul G. Krebs was installed as pastor of Resurrection Lutheran Church, 445 E. Stop 11 Road. He and his wife, Sylvia, had one son, Mark.

An $84,504 gas main replacement was underway in the University Heights area.
* * *
J.C. Wilson Funeral Homes hosted an open house at its new facility at the southeast corner of U.S. 31 and Main Street in Greenwood.

Spotlight Editor George Cafouros opined the following in his “Nutcracker Column”: “Speaking of speed traps, the worst one on the Southside is along Shelby Street from Hanna and Troy avenues. Shelby at that point is a big, hairy wide street with no cross streets to interfere with the flow of traffic. ... What most level-headed motorists can’t understand is why aren’t these officers out in public view where they can create an impression instead of hiding behind bushes and pillars.”

Stylists at Jan Gasper’s Reflections Beauty Salon were Marcy Harnedy, Bernie Myers, Peggy Henry, Betty Roder, Carol Caudill and Mr. Jermome “Jerry.”

Mac’s Family Steak House opened at 3939 S. Keystone Ave. The restaurant served breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Keystone TV & Appliances, 1944 E. Southport Road, was celebrating its 29th anniversary by selling 25-inch color console TVs for $698, a savings of $150. A 13-inch color TV was advertised for $298.  

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1987
Indianapolis Public Schools named Manual Principal Sarah Bogard as its Teacher of the Year.

The Sherwood Club, 6520 S. Emerson Ave., hosted all-you-can-eat fish fries every Friday. The cost was $3.35 per child, $5.95 per adult.

Dr. Carl R. Stockton, academic dean of the University of Indianapolis, was installed as president of the Perry Township Kiwanis Club. Other officers were Rick Garland, vice president; Frank Gilson, treasurer; and Randall Miller, secretary.

Kent and Sue Rumbaugh, parents of Debbie and Jason Rumbaugh, were celebrating their 25th anniversary.

Manual’s football team celebrated homecoming and the opening of its new stadium with a 25-0 upset win over Ritter.

The new SS. Francis & Clare Catholic Church in Greenwood was dedicated. The parish featured 329 families, constituting 1,356 members.

The newly installed electronic pipe organ at the new Southport Presbyterian Church was the largest in Indiana and soon to be the largest in the nation.

Margaret Ann Hillan and her daughter, Clare Trumble, joined the sales staff of Re/Max Select Realtors. Hillan and her husband, Bob, had 10 children. Trumble and her husband, Ray, had two children.
* * *
Roncalli’s Sean Schembra rushed for three touchdowns and passed for one in the Rebels’ 35-12 win over Northwest.
* * *
In recognition of the Feast of St. Francis, St. Roch Pastor James Wilmoth blessed many pets, including Janet Brown’s toy poodle, Napoleon.

Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
Dr. Thomas E. Quill Jr., who recently returned from military service, joined the dental practice of his father, Dr. Thomas E. Quill Jr. The younger Quill and his wife, the former Rosemary Higgins, had two daughters, Kathleen A. and Suzanne M.

Robert Ozment opened the Thrifty Laundry, the Southside’s first 24-hour self-serve Laundromat, at 801 Virginia Ave. Nine pounds of clothes could be washed for 20 cents; 10 minutes of drying time cost 10 cents.

The Glenns Valley PTA was sponsoring a nature trip to Brown County State Park, Bear Wallow Hill and Yellowwood Lake. 
* * *
Sanders Cleaners & Laundry opened an outlet at 340 S. Madison Ave., Greenwood.  

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
Candidates for homecoming king and queen at Manual High School were David Hoyt, Randy Boles, Ron Christy, Bill O’Neill, Randy Harrison, Linda Stegemeller, Shirely Eaton, Brenda Buescher, Linda Medcalf and Joanna Hafer.

A redecorated three-room apartment at 1306 Woodlawn Ave. rented for $70 a month; a four-room, half-double at 1408 E. Minnesota St. rented for $40 a month.

Larry’s Steak House, 3709 Madison Ave., boasted that it was “the place” for fine steaks and chops, tasty luncheon specials and entertainment every Friday and Saturday night.

Glenn and Marcia Payne opened Payne’s Meat Market at 618 Main St., Beech Grove, which formerly housed Smith’s Meat Market.

Dinner Bell Market’s special of the week was a case of 24 12-ounce throw-away bottles of Miller High Life for $5.99. Cases of returnable bottles of Alps Brau, Wisconsin Club and Ballantine cost $3.79.

A fifth of Canadian Club was advertised for $6.49 at Penn Liquors, 4031 S. Keystone Ave., where a fifth of Seagram’s 7-Crown and J&B Scotch cost $3.99 and $7.89, respectively.

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1987
Perry Township’s new fire station was opened at 1108 E. Thompson Road.

Perry Township firefighter Tracy Wood won first-place honors in the 198-pound weight class of the Indiana Firefighters and Police powerlifting competition. Wood totaled 1,330 pounds in the bench press, squat and dead lift.

Manual High School’s new football stadium and track was going to be dedicated during homecoming.
* * *
The former University Heights Hospital on Carson Avenue was sold to Myrtle Ball for $520,000 at an auction. Ball owned the Barton House, a retirement/nursing home at 505 N. Delaware St.

Perry Meridian defeated Manual 35-6 to win its homecoming game. Scoring touchdowns for the Falcons were Tony Garrett, Aaron Hohlt, Scott Parrish and Bill Mynatt (two TDs). The Redskins’ TD was scored by John Hinton.

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997
Ray Schultz, former athletic director, coach and teacher at Manual High School, announced his candidacy for state representative of House District 97. Schultz said he wanted to bring pride back to neighborhoods and communities through building a network between businesses, churches, schools and individuals.

Melinda Larmore was crowned queen of Perry Meridian’s homecoming festivities. Her court featured Della Moore, Stephanie Maxey and Lauren Popovich.

Tobi Schrader, Angie Sarver, Deirdre McNary and David King joined the sales staff of Century 21 Waterford Group, 821 N. State Road 135, Greenwood.

Roncalli elected its senior class officers: David Ernst and Corey McGarrell, co-presidents; Shannon O’Gara, treasurer; and Angie Lauck, secretary.
