Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1956
People who had been divorced twice had little, if any, chance of becoming an Indianapolis police officer. “We check the private lives of all applicants,” said Sgt. William Hague. “Naturally, we’re going to be skeptical when we see that someone has been divorced twice.”

Dance instructor Helene Charisse and some of her pupils were going to perform routines on WFMB-TV.

Midwest Radio & TV charged $3 for service calls.

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1966
Indianapolis Public Schools announced plans for a school between English and Spann avenues. School 28 would be air-conditioned with total electric heat – both firsts for IPS.

Brenda Dodson, a freshman at Manual, received Olive Branch Christian Church’s Faith and Life Award for her work with the church and Girl Scouts.
* * *
Plans for a $300,000 nursing home near U.S. 31 and I-465 and a $2.5 million shopping center on Shelby Street off the proposed four-lane Troy Avenue – east of Shelby Street – to Beech Grove were unveiled. (I don’t think these plans made it off the drawing board.)

Chicken Delight, 2863 Carson Ave., featured 12 pieces of chicken, a slew of fries and a pint of slaw for $2.97. A 24-piece shrimp dinner with fries and slaw cost the same. A 16-inch cheese pizza was $1.99.

Lee Ann Daly, daughter of Spotlight cartoonist Dr. Joe Daly, Brian Clark and William Waymire served as pages for State Rep. Forest Handlon.

Winchester Village Elementary School’s Brownie Troop 538 held a father-daughter dance. Courtney Johnson won the dance contest, narrowly outstepping Ann Curbox and Melanie Allison.

Sue Ann Hillan, daughter of Bob and Margaret Ann Hillan and a graduate of Roncalli, starred in St. Mary-of-the-Woods College’s production of “Cinderella”.

Perry Meridian students Jeff Bell, Dustin Hill, Marika Klemm, Ronald Snead, Mike Williams, Kimberly Cooper, Ahna Noe and Jeff Pearson were recognized for their achievements in the Central Indiana Regional Scholastic Art Awards Program.

Hoosier native Chris Schenkel, longtime announcer for ABC, was the guest speaker at the annual Oldtimers Banquet at the Murat Shrine Club, where Roncalli football coach Bill Kuntz was honored for winning the 1985 Class 3A title.

The National Crime Prevention Council estimated that 4 million women in the United States suffered some kind of violence at the hands of their husbands or boyfriends each year.

Southport High School’s Black History Club established a scholarship to honor the late Roy E. Bussell, a former faculty member and a founder of the club.

Channel 8 meteorologist Randy Ollis was the guest speaker for the Lenten breakfast program at Christ United Methodist Church.

The Indianapolis Oldtimers Club named retiring Manual High School teacher and athletic director Ray Schultz as its Man of the Year. 
* * *
“Money” magazine recognized Perry Township Schools as one of the top 100 affordable districts in the United States.

Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1956
The Indianapolis Water Co. invited the public to compete with meteorologists and predict when the utility’s Morse Reservoir would reach its capacity of 6.9 million gallons (the amount that flows over Niagara Falls in 10 seconds). The reservoir, northwest of Noblesville, was 20 percent full.

Janielle Wiese, the 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Wiese, was named mayor of Indianapolis for one day for selling more than 1,000 1-pound boxes of peanut brittle for the Campfire Girls.

World Day of Prayer was celebrated at various Southside churches and in 134 countries.
* * *
Conducted by Michael A. Bowles, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis was holding its annual midwinter concert at Manual High School. Bowles had quite the resume, having conducted major orchestras in Dublin, Rome, New Zealand, Rome and Canada.

Grocery specials of the week included frozen perch for 35 cents a pound, a pound of bacon, 45 cents; a pound of coffee, 89 cents; and three cans of peaches, $1.

Purdue University students Diane S. Todd and Sharon A. Resner received $100 scholarships from the Speech & Hearing Foundation.

Charlie’s Furniture & Appliances, 1062 Virginia Ave., was holding a huge tax sale. Owner Charlie LaMarca was known for saying, “No deal is a good deal unless it’s a good deal for you.”

Lynda S. Kleppe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale F. Greenwood, was going to be married to Larry S. Beckham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Beckham, at Garfield Park Church of Christ.

Garfield Park Post 88 of the American Legion served a spaghetti and meatballs dinner for $1.25.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1976
St. Roch School was hosting its annual Roch Festival, which featured games, food, a gift shop and a drawing for a color television.

Karen R. Jerrell, Clarice M. Favors and Judy Duggan graduated from Wishard Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

J. Wesley Brown, owner of Suburban Realty, 1153 E. Troy Ave., was re-elected president of the Independent Real Estate Brokers of Indiana. He was also named the agency’s Broker of the Year. Also honored was Beech Grove’s Betty Bertrand of Beech Grove, who was named Woman of the Year.
 
Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1986
Kelly Collins (the owner and publisher of this paper) joined The Spotlight staff as a sales representative. The paper was celebrating its 48th year in business.

The Southside Art League’s instructors were Betty Thomas, Neil and LilianDunnigan, Louise Johnson, Helen Fisher and Betty Wade.

Larry L. Koch announced his candidacy for Marion County sheriff.
* * *
American Pleasure Pools co-owners Mike Tolan and Jack Sharin relocated their business to 4300 S. Meridian St., where they featured displays of pools, hot tubs, wooden decks and chemicals.

Bargersville State Bank was offering 9.85 percent on its seven-year individual retirement accounts.
  
Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1996
Helen J. Carter was named to replace Haldon T. Cole as principal at Southport Middle School.

Kennedy Tank shipped a pressure vessel weighing 42,000 pounds and measuring 96 feet in length and 11 feet in diameter to Borden Inc. in Louisville. Once loaded on a trailer and rolling down the interstate,  the trailer was able to keep up with traffic.

 Bethany Lutheran Church named John Ricci and Kathy Boyer as its Members of the Year.
* * *
Coached by Lannie Stuteville and Brenda Jackson, Roncalli speech team members Aaron Pagel, Eric Hauser, Becky Goss, Christy Funke, Amanda Eads, Melanie Shafer, Katie Bell, Tony Dale, Danielle Harbor, Cindy Dyar, Rachel Hauser, Janna Semmler and Jennifer Knotts were enjoying an exceptional season.

The new We Wash It Launderette, 1329 Shelby St., was opened by Mr. and Mrs. J. Lowell Francis.

Indianapolis Times newspaper writer Irving Leibowitz, whose “Hoosier Headline” column touched on a variety of topics, condemned teenage thugs, writing that they came from all walks of life, from all races, all religions and all income brackets. “Our teenagers in Indianapolis have shot and killed without reason. Some have mobilized into gangs of burglars and robbers.”

Concord Center, 17 W. Morris St., offered various activities for adults and children, including ceramics, sewing, basketball, badminton, pingpong and cards.

Reece “Goose” Tatum and Marques Haynes, formerly with the Harlem Globetrotters, were bringing their Harlem Magicians team to Crispus Attucks for an exhibition game.

Gene Hall, Steve Darland, Gary Mezger, Jack Nowling, Terry McElfresh, Terry Kennedy, Jim Jensen, Eddie Barnard, Ronnie Fowler and Dave Peay, all of whom were enrolled in home economics classes at Southport High, were recognized for preparing an outstanding Christmas dinner for the Marion County Junior Red Cross High School Board.

Manual High School students Linda Dunn, Karlis Rusa, Leonora Conotti, Janie Murphy, Mike Allee and Steve Snoddy were competing in a contest to see which one would study abroad through a program sponsored by the Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages.

The new Boys Club at 1941 E. Hanna Ave. was going to be dedicated by Juvenile Court Judge Harold Fields.

Goldfish were advertised for 5 cents at G.C. Murphy’s, 1043 Virginia Ave., where a hot dog and a root beer cost a quarter.

Caroline Brunson, Rita Gough and Mary Stienecker graduated from the Marion County General Hospital School of Nursing.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1976
The Indianapolis Police Department was going to initiate walking patrols from 6-10 p.m. in Fountain Square.

School of Dance students Charlotte Husselman (tap) Rhonda Newport (jazz) and Leanne Lathrop (acrobatics) won top awards at a regional contest in Cincinnati.

Twin sisters Debbie and Donna Young were named co-queens of the 22nd annual Indianapolis Boat, Sport & Travel Show.
* * *
United Skates of America, 175 E. Southern Plaza Drive, was hosting a party that featured contests for backward and freestyle skating.

The sales staff at A.O. Diaz and Co. Realtors consisted of Armado Diaz, Dale Deerberg, Bonnie Erickson, Bob Stahl, Jack Bagosy, Bob Lane, Dan Harris, Fred Klemm, George Shunk, Carl Huber, Mack McCall, Milly Diaz, John Adams and Jack Nichols.
 
Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1986
An auction and chili dinner raised more than $8,000 for the “extras” needed to complete the recently remodeled athletic facilities at Manual High School. “We’ll be buying such items as new desks, filing cabinets,  chalk boards and equipment for the weight room,” said athletic director Ray Schultz.

Southport Bi-Rite Grocery, 2301 E. Southport Road, advertised ground beef for 99 cents a pound, a head of lettuce for 59 cents and a pound of bacon for $1.29.

The Indianapolis Business Boosters installed its new officers: Art Timpe, president; Dave Conner, vice president; Patty Schmalz, secretary.

The payout to bingo winners at St. James Church, 1155 E. Cameron St., was $150 per game, with the coverall paying $1,000.

Jeff Koehl, a graduate of Perry Meridian High School and a service representative at National Car Rental at Indianapolis International Airport, was honored for outstanding customer service during the ROSE (Recognition of Service Excellence) Awards at the Indiana Convention Center.

The girls basketball team from Perry Meridian High won the Beech Grove Sectional by defeating rival Roncalli 63-42. Katie Douglas led the Falcons with 19 points, while Sarah Hurrle was the game’s top scorer with 23 points.

Perry Meridian Middle School’s basketball team edged Southport Middle 29-28 to win the Perry Township tournament for the second straight year. Members of Perry’s squad were Ronnie Spencer, Nate Lowery, Jeremy Cox, Mitchell Rhoton, Jeremy Spaulding, Ross Sandefur, Robbie Hohlt, Casey Gallagher, Kyle Heidleberger, Blake Deiringer, Brandon Matheny and Danny McHugh.

The Fireside South Restaurant, 522 E. Raymond St., advertised a Valentine’s Day dinner for two for $34.95. The cost included sizzling filet mignons, salad, soup, potato and dessert.

Miller’s Regal Market at the corner of Madison and Terrace avenues was holding a 10-day sale to celebrate its 56th anniversary. Specials included 10 ounces of frozen strawberries for 29 cents, 3 pounds of Crisco, 79 cents; two cans of apple sauce, 25 cents; a half-gallon of ice cream, 59 cents; and 5 pounds of oranges or grapefruit, 39 cents.

Mrs. Paul Snider was looking for 7- to 10-year-old girls who were interested in becoming members of a Brownie troop sponsored by Madison Avenue Methodist Church.

Arthur J. Beck, a 14-year deputy U.S. marshal, was appointed deputy clerk of the Federal District Court in Indianapolis. The job paid $4,755 annually.

Mary F. Tietz was engaged to Tom Crampton. 

Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1966
The girls gymnastics team from Baxter YMCA won the Indianapolis YMCA championship. Leading the way were all-around champions Joe Ellen McFall (ages 11 and under), Marcia Gunnion (12-15) and Jayne Thompson (15-18).

“Hearts and Flowers” was the theme of the card party being sponsored by South Group Women’s Committee of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Philip R. George was chairing the event.

The new management at the Singer sewing machine store in Southern Plaza was holding a housecleaning sale. A used Franklin console was marked down to $9.95 from $24.95, and a good portable machine was $24.50. Discontinued button cards cost 10 cents.

Clare Ann Hillan, the 2-1/2-year-old daughter of Bob and Margaret Ann Hillan, must have wanted to have a good dental checkup as she ate more than a half tube of Crest toothpaste. When the foam and bubbles started to back up in her mouth, she became a mighty sick girl, reported George Cafouros in his “Nutcracker” column.

The Merchants Association of Southern Plaza Shopping Center elected officers and directors for its 15th anniversary year. They were Rick Gasaway, John Boyers, Frank D. Bixler, Gary Williams, Lyle White, Mike Baxter, Bob Miles, Jack Kahrs and John Visker.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl D. Kayffman were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to Florida. The couple had two sons, Russ and Rick Kauffman.

The Southside Youth Council celebrated its 10th anniversary by relocating to a larger facility at 5110 Madison Ave. The agency served parents who needed help with the stresses of raising children.

Roncalli was forming an alumni association, whose membership was also open to all former students and graduates of Sacred Heart, Kennedy and Chartrand high schools.

Century 21 Skillman Realtors Alice Miller, Vern Heber, Alice Griffin and Flo Gukien each sold in excess of $1 million in real estate during 1985.

Lisa Fall, a 1985 graduate of Southport and the daughter of Martin and Mary Fall, was serving on Purdue’s freshman student council.

Roncalli wrestlers Mike Bowling, Steve Clements, Eric Feldhake and Donny Nevitt won sectional championships; John Black and Howie Cotty were runners-up.

Good Shepherd Catholic Parish – formed through the merger of St. James and St. Catherine of Siena churches – broke ground for its new worship center at the intersection of Cameron, Carson and Shelby streets.

First- through fifth-place finishers in the Southside Sertoma Club’s Freedom Essay Contest for sixth-graders in Perry Township Schools were Andrea McCullough, Bekkcy Hinchman, Erin Frank, Therese West and Shannon Cook.

Beech Grove High School’s Robin Adair, Manual’s Amanda Parks and Southport’s Jacqueline M. Canada were finalists in the Downtown Kiwanis Club’s Abe Lincoln Scholarship Program, which presented grants to seniors who had succeed in the face of overwhelming obstacles.

Perry Meridian High School’s girls basketball team was 19-3 and ranked No. 7 in the state. Roncalli (15-4) was No. 16.

Roncalli’s Students of the Month for January were Phillip Minar, Amanda Knotts, Steve Eckhart, Emily Szostak, Stephanie Rizi, Melissa Williams, Beth Weinman, Laura Smith, Sarah Williams, Fred Carr, Laura Agresta and Daniel Beuoy.
