Sharon Resner and Rina Linz, seniors at Southport and Manual high schools, respectively, competed in the fifth annual Photoflash beauty pageant.

A gallon of milk cost 59 cents; a used electric range cost $75; a furnished four-room half-double rented for $90 for a month; and a 1952 Chevrolet was priced at $100 (it was said to run great while being cosmetically impaired).

Sister M. Justine was named director of St. Francis Hospital’s department of staff education. She held degrees from St. Joseph Hospital in Tennessee, Loyola University in Chicago and Ball State University.

All five children in the Floyd Fortner family underwent tonsillectomies. Floyd, 10, Mary, 7, and Steven, 4, came through in grand style, but Clayton and Donna, both 5, experienced a few minor complications.

Former Perry Meridian High School gymnast Nicole Richards, paralyzed from the neck down in a 2000 car wreck, participated in the Olympic torch relay as it passed through Indianapolis. Also toting the torch were Gerard Striby and Mike A. Taylor, who had become an inspirational speaker after his 11-year-old son, Evan, drowned in Dale Hollow Lake in Tennessee in 2000.

Southside Exchange Club members Salvatore Mazza, Urban Renner, John Easley, Harold Joergens, Alan Campbell, Robert Sanders, Kenneth Kasper and Salvatore LaRosa rededicated Roncalli’s Freedom Shrine, which featured replicas of America’s most important documents.

The Ladies Auxiliary of Prospect Chapter 452 Order of Eastern Star installed its officers: Edith Chance, president; Barbara Francis, vice president; Mable Denker, treasurer; Ella Marsh and Donna Rohr, directors; and Myrtle Reed and Alma Shepherd, publicists.
