Sixty Years Ago This Week – 1957 
Pedigo Jewelers, 1048 Virginia Ave., was celebrating its 12th anniversary “with the greatest sale in our colorful history,” boasted General Manager Kenneth Pedigo.

Southport Baptist Church, corner of McFarland and Banta roads, was celebrating its 125th anniversary.
* * *
King Kastle, 411 S. West St., advertised hamburgers for 12 cents, malts, 17 cents and hot ham sandwiches, 23 cents.
* * *
Grocery specials of the week included tom turkeys for 39 cents a pound; 5 pounds of sugar, 49 cents; mincemeat, 63 cents for 28 ounces; chuck roast, 69 cents a pound; and a 5-pound canned ham, $4.49.
   
Fifty Years Ago This Week – 1967
University Heights Hospital awarded five-year pins to Dallas Swant, Jesse Dove, Dorothy Shaw, Ada Waldo, Alice Hollingsworth, Sarah Fyffe, Lorena Steveson, Theordore Fulk, Sara Beth Pitcher, Allie Hollis, Inez Dougherty, Geneva Donahue, Edith Vasso, Dorothy Terrell and Donald Ciolli.

Ralph Schludecker, a member on the Monsignor Downey Knights of Columbus choral group, had one of the featured roles in Footlite Musicals’ production of “Oliver.”

Hair stylist Jerry Hansen joined the staff at the Jade Room, 7210 Madison Ave. The shop’s owner, Robert Willison, had recently appeared on the “Jim Gerard Show” on Channel 6.

Kennedy High School junior Patricia Gaither won $100 from the Indiana Heart Association for her science project.

Forty Years Ago This Week – 1977

Michael Dye was named manager of the Local Finance Corp.’s Greenwood branch. He and his wife, Jill, had three children.

The Madison Avenue Flower Shop was hosting Christmas gift shows at both of its stores, 2457 Madison Ave. and 700 N. U.S. 31, Greenwood.

Lenore Foster was selected president of Perry Senior Citizens Services. Other officers were Mary Ann Seyfried, vice president; Helen Burgmann, secretary; and Phillip Borst, treasurer.

Heidenreich Greenhouses, 502 E. National Ave., was selling African violets for $2, Christmas cacti for $2.50 and jade plants for $18. 

Thirty Years Ago This Week – 1987
Roger and Robin Heldman, who trained at Ardizzone & Nalley Gym, took first-place honors at Indiana’s strongest man and woman powerlifting competition in Wabash. Roger competed in the 198-pound class, Robin in the 114-pound division.

 Dance Refinery students Stacy Dietz, Trisha Wright, Andrew Hudson and Laura Stickle took first-place honors in the jazz competition at the Regency Talent Competition in Cincinnati with their interpretation of the Beech Boys’ “California Girls.”

Brandy Stultz, the 11-year-old daughter of Monte and Rita Stultz and a pupil at Southport Elementary School, was cast as the orphan Kate in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “Annie.”

The Sherwood Country Club, 6520 S. Emerson Ave., was going to serve Thanksgiving Day buffets for $6.95. 

Twenty Years Ago This Week – 1997

Students in Dick Gallamore’s fourth-grade class offered tips on how to bake a turkey:
• Heather Norris: Buy a 30-pound turkey from the Dead Turkey Salon. Take everything out of the turkey and mix it in a blender for seven minutes. Then you take all that stuff and pour it over the turkey before cooking it for eight hours. It will serve about 50 people.
• Charlie Zepp: Cook a 34-pound turkey for 90 minutes at 34 degrees.
• Abby Hurrle: Buy a 2-pound turkey; bring it home; clean it; add seasoning; set the oven at 450 degrees and cook for 30 minutes; remove from oven and serve.
• Andrew Ferry: Buy two turkeys; cook one for 45 minutes and burn the other one to serve to unwanted guests. 
• Andrew Davis: Take the guts out of the turkey and cook it for 90 minutes. If it’s not done, put it back in the oven for 10 minutes.

St. Barnabas Grade School’s seventh- and eighth-grade B kickball team won the Catholic Youth Organization city title. The squad featured Amber Martin, Angela Babb, Ashley Bencik, Lindsey Heiob, Erica Heinekamp, Sarah Mitchell, Ashley Werner, Kari Andrews, Elaine Cissel, Melissa Clark and coaches Mary Kay Keller, Jamie Schroeder and Carrie McGuire.

A developer proposed to build a CVS drugstore and a McDonald’s at Raymond and Shelby streets, site of the former St. Catherine Catholic Church.

Ray and Sandy Schultz, Lura and Bill Shannon, Joyce Lietch, Lori and Ken Boyce, Kathleen Kindred and Wayne Sharp were among those who attended the “Evening Under Glass” fundraiser for the Garfield Park Conservatory.
