60 Years Ago This Week - 1962 
St. Roch Parish was giving away a new Ford Falcon as the grand prize at its Super Fiesta.

There were only two McDonald’s in Indianapolis, one at 3920 Shelby St. and one at 5265 E. 38th St. Founded in 1955, the restaurant chain boasted 365 stores in 40 states and had sold more than 600 million hamburgers.

The Indianapolis Departments of Parks and Recreation paid its lifeguards $235 a month.
* * * 
The new YMCA swimming pool opened at 7900 Shelby St.
* * * 
The hottest topic in Perry Township was the unexpected “resignation” of Southport Grade School Principal Roscoe Kirkman. When asked about his departure, he replied, “I did not resign; I was fired.” A petition calling for his reinstatement had been signed by 800 citizens.
 
50 Years Ago This Week - 1972
Indianapolis Public School 39 hosted a luncheon to honor the following teachers: Cleota Purdy, Irene Lankford, Imma Mice, Marian Higgins, Catherine Case, Mrs. R. Powell and Mrs L. Schaekel.

In what was a first for the newspaper, a full-page color ad was purchased by Gerdt Furniture in Southport. The promotion was for a Father’s Day sale, which featured La-Z-Boy’s Reclina-Rockers for $138.

New and used watches and Polaroid cameras were priced from $6.95 at a pawnshop on Virginia Avenue, where first and second promise rings were advertised for $3.95 and up.

Davidson’s Home Supply Center in Southport sold quality paint for $8.10 a gallon.

The Indianapolis Zoo charged an admission fee of 50 cents for children and $1.25 for adults.

The archives from 1982 were ruined when The Spotlight’s lower level was flooded in June of 1992.

Beech Grove High School senior Mark Snow was awarded a swimming scholarship to Vincennes University. Snow was the Marion County champion in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly and a state finalist in both events.

Editors of “U.S. Kids,” a monthly magazine, named Indianapolis Public School students Donna Hornaday and Diana Childers to its Youth Advisory Council.

20 Years Ago This Week - 2002
Southport High School basketball standouts Starr Jackson and Sarah Bowling signed letters of intent to play for Chicago State University and Marian College, respectively.

Boy Scout Troop 499 volunteered to assist with the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade for the 30th consecutive year.

Donald and Jean (Magee) Green celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary with their children, Darrin and Jeff Green and Amy Lentz.

Wrecking crews began demolishing the former Baptist Temple in the 2700 block of South East Street. The main sanctuary was being leveled, but most of the school building would remain intact. Plans called for the site to house a charter school.

After 30 years of service to Perry Township Schools, Southport High School Principal Larry Hensley-Marschand retired. 

10 Years Ago This Week - 2012
The Beech Grove High School Alumni Association named Michael Chappel and Gordon “Gordie” Fields as its Alumnus and Teacher of the Year, respectively. Chappel was a sports writer for The Indianapolis Star, and Fields taught physical education and language and coached football, basketball, track and wrestling before retiring in 2002.

Beech Grove, Lutheran and Roncalli high schools won baseball sectional titles.

Roncalli’s tennis team defeated Brebeuf for its first Marion County Championship. Perry Meridian High School’s softball team won its first sectional title in 15 years by downing Ben Davis 5-2. Team members included Jordan and Abbey Ketchem, Dayle Hayden, Jenny Saladano, Katie Kelley, Sam Amos, Maggie MacBeth and Shannon Burton.
