A fire at the Key West Shrimp House, 2861 Madison Ave., caused little damage on the main level but forced owner C.B. Kendall to close the second-floor dining room for extensive restoration. Many of the original European oil paintings and tapestries were destroyed.

Rex M. Joseph Jr., a friend and a longtime reader of The Southsider Voice, informed me that I listed the wrong names for Southport High School’s Exercise in Knowledge team in this section of the May 10 column. The team, which finished second to Manual, featured Barbara Bradford, Roger Cook, Bonnie Bufe, Lynn Bland, Nancy Raker and Joseph.

Debbie Brentz from Girl Scout Troop 1040 sold 518 boxes of the organization’s famed cookies, the most of anyone in the Hoosier Capital Council. Sherri Jackson, a fellow troop member, peddled 400 boxes. Their leader was Mrs. Thomas Thompson.

The Spotlight newspaper received a Half Century Business Award from the Indiana Department of Commerce. Lt. Gov. Frank O’Bannon and state Rep. David Frizzell presented the award to former publisher George Cafouros and sales manager Ron Douglas. Publisher Jerry Cosby wasn’t on hand for the ceremony as he was most likely covering a breaking news story or jaunting off to some exotic resort.

The Indiana Collegiate Press Association named Cory Shouten, a graduate of Southport High School and a student at Indiana University, as the Brook Baker Collegiate Journalist of the Year. Cited for his work on the Indiana Daily Student, Shouten received a monetary prize.

Jasmine Slivka, a second-grader at St. Barnabas School and the daughter of Donna and John Slivka, took first-place honors on the balance beam at the regional gymnastics championships in Louisville, where she finished sixth all-around.
Roncalli religious studies teacher Jan Lauck retired after 23 years in the classroom. The news of her departure brought forth an abundance of well-wishers who praised her for exhibiting passion when it came to teaching.

Ray Bertram and James Tonte were inducted into Southport High School’s Wall of Fame, which honored former athletes who achieved success during and after their careers at the school. Both had dedicated many years of service to Perry Township Schools, with Tonte leading Perry Meridian’s wrestling team to state titles in 2011, ‘12 and ‘13.
