60 Years Ago This Week - 1962 
Vicky Davis was installed as worthy adviser of Southport Assembly No. 10 Order of Rainbows for Girls, a Masonic organization.

Helene Charisse, who was choreographing Footlite Musicals’ production of “Pal Joey,” selected her cast of dancers: Judy Marschke, Karen Mulholland, Gloria Faust, Ann Kimmell, Gay Besser, Jo Ann Beard, Tina Murray, Don Grissell, Larry Craycraft, Ron Bowler, Charles McAllister and Keith Shields.

William Richards, a graduate of Southport High School and Indiana University of Law School, joined the legal firm of Auberry, Sallee and Shaffer.

Serving on the organizing committee of St. Roch Parish’s Super Fiesta were Ernest Ratz, Eugene Strack, Carl Madden, Charles Lauck, Salvadore Mazza, Jane Kraeszig, Ed Stumpf, Richard Heidelberger, Al Huck and Joseph Kiefer.

 50 Years Ago This Week - 1972
Southport High School graduate Larry Schmalfeldt was named the Most Valuable Player of Olivet Nazarene College’s soccer and golf teams.

St. Jude’s junior Catholic Youth Organization kickball team won the city tournament. The Oasis Tavern, 5559 Madison Ave., served all-you-could-eat spaghetti and meat sauce dinners for $1.95.

Doc Gainey’s Tavern, 3652 Meridian St., served fried chicken dinners for 49 cents (plus a 1 cent tax).

Edward Heidenreich, who owned Heidenreich Florists, celebrated his 50th year in business. The company was started in 1890 by his father, John.

40 Years Ago This Week - 1982
The archives from 1982 were ruined when The Spotlight’s lower level was flooded in June of 1992.

30 Years Ago This Week - 1992
A memorial service was held for Lt. Neal Jones, a 1982 graduate of Perry Meridian who was killed while piloting an F-14 Tomcat during a training mission near Reno, Nev. The ceremony was held at Holder Field, where he played high school baseball.

Sister Rosemary Haag celebrated her golden jubilee with a Mass and a reception at Sacred Heart Church.

Bargains galore abounded at the 65-plus garage sales around the Southside.

Carole Wade Myers, owner of Myers Ambulance Service, was named Southport High School’s Outstanding Alumnus.

20 Years Ago This Week - 2002
An in memoriam marking the one-year death of Spotlight founder George Caforous was published.

Southport High School senior Neil Weitzel achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor attainable in Scouting. His service project entailed conducting technology classes for fellow classmates.

Roncalli’s Students of the Month for May were Nick Barton, Anna Sander, Jordan Surber, Laura Wagner, Cara Gaughan, Amy Suntum, Christina Frey, Patrick Pitcock, John Dildine, Joe Smagacz, James Baker and Chris Leppert.

The German-American Klub, established in the 1970s at 8602 S. Meridian St., honored its founders, Gary and Eva Cummings, Frank Scholl, Betty Scales, Ginny and Adolf Becker and Lorra Schroader.

Manual senior Amber Spear and Valley Mills Elementary student Sam Ervin won first-place honors at the art contest that celebrated the World Basketball championship at Conseco Fieldhouse. Second- and third-place finishers were Brett Flickinger, Sterling Topton, Tom Gregory, Andy Elliott, Jamie Cartwright and Jessica Couch. They received their awards from former NBA standout and Olympian Charles Barkley.

10 Years Ago This Week - 2012

Roncalli students Chessie LaRosa, Jimmy Henke and Grace Weisenbach (and the late Kaitlin Lynch) received Pope John XXIII Awards during the school’s commencement program. The honorees were recognized for exercising their religious beliefs through actions and words.
