Shonk’s Bus Transportation was recognized for logging 137,000 accident-free miles for Perry Township Schools. The drivers included George Frye, Ralph Niehaus, Alve Coryell, Betty Phelps and Mary Hancock.

Karen Brosey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Gallo and a graduate of Southport High School, was elected Miss AFNB (American Fletcher National Bank) by her fellow employees. Brosey worked in the credit department.

The Greater Southside Republican Club elected its officers: Earl Myers, president; Mrs. Arthur Persinger, vice president; Mrs. Edwin L. Healy, secretary; Harold Norcross, treasurer.

Linda Dillehay, Bobbie Perry and Jenny Parish sold 1,306 boxes of Camp Fire Girls candy. The girls, who attended IPS School 19, led District 7 in sales.
40 Years Ago This Week – 1979
The Third Generation Band was going to perform at the annual Gaslight Gayeties at Roncalli, where Jerry Cosby would serve as master of ceremonies. Old-fashioned gas lights, red checkered tablecloths, candlelight and an antique popcorn wagon - busily popping corn - would add atmosphere to the evening of dancing and singalongs.

Asit Parikh and Tina Yen earned valedictorian and salutatorian honors, respectively, at Perry Meridian. Parikh, whose GPA was 4.62, had not decided on a college but planned to study biology. Yen was going to pursue a degree in economics or international relations at Stanford or the University of California at Berkley.

Top winners in the sixth annual Perry Science Fair were Marty Schoegl, Craig Atkins, Chris Wilson, Rosendo Tansinsin and Sharon Cardwell.
Perry Meridian’s boys basketball team won its first sectional title since 1984 by defeating Decatur Center 51-43.

St. Jude Grade School teacher Carolyn Meisberger was honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution for teaching her students the importance of loyalty to the United States.

John F. Maxwell, a graduate of Southport High School and a photographer for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife, won three first-place prizes in the Hoosier Outdoor Writers Association’s annual competition. One of his articles was about fishing for muskellunge.
