Indiana University’s basketball team won the NCAA title by defeating Syracuse 74-73 on Keith Smart’s buzzer-beating shot. Steve Alford hit seven 3-pointers for the Hoosiers and led all scorers with 23 points. The title was the third for coach Bobby Knight.
