Human rights activists and city leaders marched from 16th and Dr. Martin Lutheran King Jr. streets to Monument Circle to highlight the plight of the homeless. Organizers had anticipated a large turnout, but a wind chill factor below zero kept many people away (I recall freezing my butt off while covering the event).

The Kiwanis International Foundation awarded its Robert P. Connelly Medal to Sharon Beeler for saving the life of Brandon Green, who nearly drowned in a retention pond near U.S. 31 and Epler Avenue.

Glenns Valley Elementary students Kevin Black, Josh Hicks and Cody McGrath, seen with physical education teacher Dianna Hall, raised the most money in the school's fundraiser for the National Heart Association. They and their classmates collected nearly $10,000.
