Submitted photos Rupert Boneham (center) of “Survivor” fame served as grand marshal for Southport High School’s homecoming parade, which was held Friday under beautiful blue skies. He was welcomed by Perry Township Schools Superintendent Tom Little and Principal Barb Brouwer. The evening culminated with the Class 6A No. 5 Cardinals upping their football record to 5-0 with a 38-17 victory over Bloomington South.
Following the homecoming theme of “Cardinals Take Center Stage,” the parade featured a replica of the White Lightning car, the original of which was in “Grease.” The float was one of 64 units in the parade. Children of all ages lined the route and were ready and waiting for candy to be thrown their direction. Some kids were prepared with bags, boxes and sacks for holding their “loot.”

SOUTHSIDER VOICE PHOTOS BY B. SCOTT MOHR In Lifetouch’s annual contest that recognizes outstanding parish directories, St. Mark Catholic Church took first place in the StoryBuilder hardback division to claim Best of the Best honors. Doug Gilliland (second from left), a church consultant with Lifetouch, presented the award to Kevin Sweeney as Ann Berkemeier and the Rev. Todd Riebe sport proud smiles. Gilliland, whose company also publishes school yearbooks and owns photography studios, said the award is quite an honor because St. Mark competed against hundreds of churches from across the country. While Sweeney laid out the directory, whose cover is depicted below, Rusty Albertson and Eric Greulich took most off the photographs. |
