Southport senior Billy Cross, (top photo) seen with Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, received Catholic Charities in Indianapolis’ Spirit of Service Youth Award on April 30 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom. A member of St. Mark Parish and the son of Scott and Christy Cross, Billy volunteers at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen, teaches Sunday school and coaches the school’s seven- and eight-grade basketball team. Also honored were St. Mark’s Art and Ann Berkemeier (below), who were presented the Spirit of Service Award for their volunteer work with St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry, which is among the largest in the Midwest. While all three recipients are known for serving others with compassion and an unwavering spirit to improving the lives of those around them, they noted that the recognition was fine but agreed that the real reward comes from the joy of helping others.
