SUBMITTED PHOTO Southport’s newspaper, The Journal, won awards at the state and national high school journalism conventions. Last year’s Journal was named an honorable mention Hoosier Star winner at the state convention, placing it among the top six large school newspapers in Indiana. At the national convention five staff members won awards. Drew Tapp (second from left) won an Excellent Award in the press law and ethics contest. THIS WEEK’S KORNER IS BY NATHAN PACE Beech Grove High School students and faculty raised more than $9,100 for Riley Hospital for Children during their inaugural dance marathon Saturday night. The total nearly doubled the goal of $5,000. Money was raised all week as students paid a dollar to wear a costume or pajamas to school on certain days. Activities during the six-hour event included duct taping a teacher to the wall, a photo booth, guest speakers, basketball tournament and face painting station.
