Coach’s comments: “We lost a lot to graduation, all our outfielders, third-baseman Rachel Derf and majority of our pitching. We will have to put up runs to stay in games. Kind of the same situation we had last year. We’re very young and a little inexperienced with our pitching. Hitting will be a key. Anyone who can hit will find a way into the lineup. We have enough for a JV team that we didn’t have last year. And we have some good freshmen. We will preach the same little things – effort, energy and attitude.”
GREENWOOD (4A, 8-20) – Program on upswing with a JV team this year after a year’s absence … stuck on consecutive 8-win seasons … 3rd-year coach Greg Norman saw six starters graduate, including entire outfield … will rely on seniors, catcher Lexi Rees, second-baseman Allison Hayes & pitcher McKenzie Riffey … junior starters, Dominique Proctor at short & Tori Stout on the mound … lineup mixes in soph 1st-baseman Kiley Hankenhoff who started most games last year , junior Leah Rees & freshman Alyssa Lewis … 3rdbase & all outfield spots open among 6 players … optimism prevails.

GREENWOOD CHRISTIAN (1A, 10-7) – Numbers are up … 19 players give Cougars enough for 5 JV games … 1st-time varsity coach Tami Haynes takes reins … hit .411 last year & stole 142 bases (8.3 per game), but hit only 4 home runs … graduated both catchers … many positions not locked in … returns with 2 seniors, speedy outfielder Avery Shingleton (.500) & pitcher Marissa Jent (.400) … junior 1st-baseman Morgan Haynes (.698, 37 hits, 28 RBI, 22 stolen bases) leads talented class … junior 3rdbaseman Alexis Mead (.457) with classmates, middle infielder Abigail Warner (.460, 30 runs) & outfielders Daniel Whitney, Grace McDaniel, Grace McDaniel & Lily Rastenburg … sophs Izzy Reed (.500) & Katelyn Potter are first-time catchers … soph Holly Overton another outfielder … frosh Haley Haynes adds to mound corps.
Coach’s comments: “We have a great group of girls. We’ve been throwing a lot at them, but I think we will have a good year. They work hard; we’ve had some long practices without a complaint. They are intense and give full effort. They are coachable, smart and athletic. Our two seniors show leadership and we have good returning players with girls who really are up and coming. Most of them know each other well because of softball and other sports. We have a strong junior class that will help us offensively and defensively. We have a lot of speed and contact hitters, but I want to see more home runs. We want to grow this program over time.” |
