Perry Meridian High School has named Jennifer Hawk as its new varsity volleyball coach.

Hawk brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Falcons, having coached at the University of Georgia, Samford and the University of New Orleans.  

She also spent five years as a teacher and head coach at Archbishop Chapelle High School in Metairie, La., where she accumulated a record of 124-76 and qualified for the state tournament every year, reaching the semifinals while going 40-6 in 2013. 

Hawk had a stellar college career as a player at the University of Michigan. She led the team to three NCAA tournaments while breaking the school record with 1,562 kills and 1,381 digs. She graduated with 230 blocks, 158 assists, 60 service aces and a 3.46 kills per game average. 

A graduate of Center Grove High School, Hawk led the Trojans to the 2000 4A state championship. She and her husband, Deputy U.S. Marshall Garrett Hawk, have a daughter, Skylar.

Franklin Central boys basketball coach John Rockey knows a thing or two about winning sectional championships.
Rockey and the Flashes will seek their fifth consecutive title next week in a Class 4A sectional on their home court against a dangerous six-team field.

“To win sectionals you have to play defense and rebound,” Rockey said. “All the teams have a lot of talent; it’s going to be a tossup.”

The Flashes have faced talented and well-balanced fields for four straight years and have walked off the court with the sectional trophy. The Flashes were definite underdogs in 2014 and 2015 but slight favorites the past two years.

The Franklin Central field also features Mid-State champion Franklin, Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference member and slight favorite Center Grove, Greenwood, Whiteland and Martinsville.

The Flashes warmed up for sectional action by dominating injury-riddled Roncalli 81-58 Friday on the Flashes’ senior night, sponsor appreciation night and with the famous Indy Air Bears performing at halftime.

If sectional play is as exciting as last weekend, Southside teams are in for a hot time.

Southport Fieldhouse was the site of a wild finish Friday. The Cardinals scored six points in the final three seconds to stun Terre Haute South 63-61. Freshman Breven Jefferson canned the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Cardinals.

Upset-minded Manual pushed host and defending 4A state champion New Albany into overtime Saturday before losing 76-72. The Redskins led 31-26 at the half and were ahead by three points until Romeo Langford tied it in regulation. Manual’s Courvoisier McCauley scored 32 points with Langford scoring a game-high 40.

McCauley is in a tight four-way chase to be Indiana’s leading scorer of the season.
