By Al Stilley Senior Staff Writer Greenwood senior running back and season rushing leader John Gallman isn’t concerned about how many touchdowns he scores as long as the Woodmen win. Gallman toted the pigskin 33 times for 215 yards and one touchdown while sophomore running mate Brandon Rosado had a career game with five touchdowns and 190 yards in Friday’s 42-25 win over Beech Grove in the opening round Class 4A sectional action. Rosado scored on runs of 28, 10, 14, 12 and 27 yards; Gallman’s 5-yard TD was Greenwood’s first score. “As long as we’re winning I don’t care who scores,” Gallman said. “Brandon played great; he’s getting better every week, and our line play is really improved. Our receivers did a good job of blocking on the edges and that got us to the outside. We’re getting better every week.” Greenwood’s ground game and tenacious defense propelled the Woodmen, who knocked the reigning two-time sectional champion Hornets from the playoffs. The Hornets trailed 21-7 at halftime but scored early in the third quarter on a nifty 53-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Chase Andries to classmate Walter Ballinger. Rosado’s final TD pushed Greenwood ahead 42-19 with 2:42 remaining. Andries threw for two touchdowns and 249 yards. His 5-yard scoring run put the Hornets on the board first. He was intercepted once in the second quarter and twice in the third period by senior defender Jackson Daugherty: in the end zone and on the 3-yard line. Andries had thrown only three interceptions in nine games until facing Greenwood’s defenders. He was 18-of-29 for 252 yards and two touchdowns against the Woodmen. “We knew with their offense we needed to sustain some momentum, be physical up front and we really tried to pound the ball,” Greenwood coach Mike Campbell said. “Their offense is really hard to handle, but once we got going on offense near the end of the first quarter we finally got rolling.” Regarding the one-two punch of Gallman and Rosado, Campbell said, “Both backs ran well, and they kept the ball secured. The focus was on Johnny early in the season; he loves to run on grass. We were expecting a big game from him and he delivered. We’re not afraid to give the ball to either guy and they’re selfless enough to block for each other.” Seniors Jordan Anderson and Brayton England led Greenwood’s defense with 17 combined tackles. Beech Grove finishes 6-4 as Indiana Crossroads Conference co-champions and back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1995. “We didn’t come out and play like we hoped; but give Greenwood credit for that,” Beech Grove coach Mark Weller said. “We had a great year; I’m really proud of our seniors. We have a lot to look forward to next season.” Andries’ totals for the 10-game season show a 60.7 pass completion percentage (148-of-267), 2,781 yards passing and 23 touchdowns. |
