SUBMITTED PHOTO Southport Elementary School teacher Kelly Wilber (center) recently received the Milken Educator Award from Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz and National Institute for Excellence in Teaching President and Milken educator Gary Stark (left) during an all-school convocation. Wilber, also seen with Principal Daniel Mendez (right) and Perry Township Schools Superintendent Tom Little, was presented with a $25,000 check. Established in 1987 as an initiative of the Milken Family Foundation, the awards program rewards and inspires excellence in education by honoring top educators around the country. Not an accolade for lifetime achievement or the proverbial gold watch at the exit door, the awards target early-to-mid-career professionals for their impressive achievements and, more significantly, for the promise of what they will accomplish in the future. To date, more than 2,600 awards totaling $65-plus million have been given out.
