The Indiana Council for the Social Studies has named Catherine England as its 2014 Distinguished Teacher and Chassity Mahaska as the recipient of the Jane Lowrie Bacon Grant.

England, a second-grade teacher at Bunker Hill Elementary in Franklin Township, is known for her commitment and leadership in social studies, which is shown in her creative teaching style. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Indianapolis and her graduate degree from Butler.

“Watching Cathy lead curriculum development in the area of social studies has afforded me the opportunity to see what immense skills she possesses,” said Principal Brook Wessel-Burke.

Mahaska, a graduate of Indiana University and originally an accountant, is beginning a second career as a social studies teacher at Franklin Central High School. She plans to use her grant to launch a project that incorporates children’s picture books along with economic materials in teaching financial concepts to seniors.

“Chassity’s proposal for her economics class is exactly the type of lesson and activity that will make the concepts of economics relevant,” said Todd Kendrick, chairman of the social  studies department.

Both educators will receive their awards at the council’s annual conference Nov. 14 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
